I've just found this quiz that will helps us measure our ecological footprint. After answering to all questions I realized there are still some changes to be done in my live if I want it to be sustainable. I mean...we would need 1,22 planets if everyone lived like me....

Pechinchas..../ Bargains...

dsc_0271

You might remember that I planted an orange tree and a tangerine two weeks ago...I bought the trees, for a very small price, in a supermarket, and was very happy with the bargain.

dsc_0177

Until, that is, I took the trees out of the pot. This is how they looked...no root ball, just a few sad little roots. I'm not an optimist by nature, but this time I decided that things were going to be alright, and the trees would survive.

dsc_0179

They didn't...and this is what they looked like yesterday.
Of course I riped them of and replaced them by two new trees. This time I bought them where I usually buy all my fruit trees.

dsc_0181

They costed me 4 times as much as the others, but in comparison, the root ball was very healthy and the trees a lot bigger. This will teach me not to buy the first bargain I see.

Já não deve faltar muito!/It shouldn't be long now!

dsc_0040-3

Esta é uma foto da MariCarmen hoje...

This is picture of MariCarmen taken today...

dsc_0025-1

.....hmmmm....ovinhos frescos....

This one was taken precisely 2 weeks ago. Can you see the difference? Amazing no? The girls has grown a lot! It shouldn't be long before she starts laying her first eggs.
....fresh eggs.....yummy.....

Conversas de galinheiro / Chicken talk

dsc_0057-1

Today we finally had a day without rain. Because of the wet weather its been a while since I last spent some time with the girls. Today, after some work in the veg garden, into the chicken pen I went.

dsc_0070-1

They were not very interested in me at first. Their attention was on the weeds I took them...

dsc_0011-4

Mas aos poucos lá as "convenci" a aproximarem-se. Primeiro, como sempre, a MariCarmen..

But then I managed to "convince" them to come closer. The first to approached me was, as usual MariCarmen...

dsc_0028-3

Cada vez mais perto...

And closer she came...

dsc_0021-3

Como é que a convenci?

How was she convinced?

dsc_0042-3

Com uvas, claro! A mais recente iguaria do galinheiro.

With grapes, naturally! It's the girls most recent gastronomic delight.

dsc_0120

Uvas?!!

Did you say grapes?!!

dsc_0124

As soon as the news spread all the girls came running.

dsc_0087-3

Todas, mesmo! Até a Paquita, a mais timida.

All of them! Even Paquita, the shy one.

dsc_0141

Tudo, claro, sob a atenta supervisão do guardião da horta/galinheiro.

All this under the close supervision of the veg garden/chicken keeper, of course.

Chuva /Rain

dsc_0090-1

Its been raining non stop for the past few days (well at least during all my days of) so I haven't been doing much in the garden. The big advantage of all this rain (among others, I know) is that all the white lupine seeds I sowed last week are sprouting.
Here in portugal, during summer, we eat tle lupine seed (after beeing boiled and kept in salty water) with fresh beer, but that was not my intention when I sowed these. I plan on using them as green manure, so by the time they start blooming they will be buried bringing all those nutrients back to the soil. Also, since lupine is a legume, they will fixate nitrogen in the soil making it more fertile for the crops that follow.

O jardim no Inverno / Winter garden

dsc_0167

There isn't much going on in the garden. Most plants are dormant or just starting the growth period. Some need a bit (once it stops raining) of pruning and a few are blooming. Kniphophia is one of them...

dsc_0112

and in another bed Chasmanthe. They are looking their best.

dsc_0094

But undoubtly, the most beautiful plant, at this time of year, is the almond tree. They are starting to bloom now, and the fields are looking their best with all the trees covered in white flowers.

dsc_0091

Luckilly I have a few of my own, so every year I can enjoy the show from close.

dsc_0103

dsc_0099

In the vegetable garden all the legumes are doing very well. The broad beans keep on blooming away (don't you think this is one of the prettiest flowers in the veg garden?). Still no pods, but eventually they will come...

dsc_0095

Snap peas are now starting to bloom. They were one of the best crops last year and I'm hoping that will be the case one again.

dsc_0105

And in the berry patch, the newly planted satrawberries are starting to grow. I hope that the new bed I chose for them (not has exposed to the scorching summer heat and with a lot more organic matter) will be more appropriate than last year's. I really want strawberries!

After a careful look around the garden I realised that there were more frost damaged plants. Not too many, specially if we consider that in some areas close by the temperatures dropped until -3ºC (I've just heard it on the news)

dsc_0085-1

In the vegetable garden I found some phisalis were frost damaged.

dsc_0081

And in the garden the two Plectranthus species I have were quite damaged. I couldn't find any other damaged plants which isn't too bad.

dsc_0079

A positive note is that the almond trees are blooming. Don't you just love almond blossoms?

Frio / Cold weather

dsc_0020

The temperatures have droped a lot in the last days. I have to be honest and say I just not used to all this cold, even if the temperatures are not nearly as low as the temperatures in the rest of Europe. Last night was the coldest of the last few years and when I got to the garden there was frost in some areas, something I had never seen in my garden.

dsc_0017

It's quite a beautiful sight, if you forget the potential damage it can cause in your plants.

dsc_0015

dsc_0007

dsc_0013

And when I got to the vegetable garden I could see the full extent of the problem. Lots of ice on top of the straw mulch...

dsc_0002

and frost damage in the potato plants. I know the fault was probably mine, since it was a bit too soon to plant potato, but I all the years I live here I had never seen frost. If only I had covered the plants with straw maybe this hadn't happen, since the parts that were under the straw are fine. Hopefully the plants will recover from this damage.

Jardinagem, finalmente! / Finally some gardening!

dsc_0263

It was about time I got some free time in order to do some gardening. This morning I went and bought some straw bales (you can imagine the state of my car after that), then I started cleaning the chicken pen and replaced all the dirty straw with new, clean one.

dsc_0163

All the dirty straw went into the composter. And that's how 4 moths of straw and chicken manure look like. In a few weeks some of it will be fed to the worms in the wormerie and transformed into one of the best fertilizers there is. The rest will go through normal composting process and also used to fertilize the vegetable garden. Can you see now why cleaning the chicken pen is gardening work?

dsc_0187-1

And after all this hard work it was time to relax a bit and spend some time with the girls. One of the novelties in the chicken pen are the new perches I did a few weeks ago...

dsc_0181-1

e uns comedouros novos que me deram ontem.

and two new feeders I received yesterday.
The girls are getting too spoiled I think. They have so many things to eat that they don't pay much attention to ripe tomatoes anymore.

dsc_0192

Another new thing the girls tried today were raisins (I had a few that were left from new year's eve, and I don't really like raisins). They didn't think much of them at the beginning. Until MariCarmen decided to try one...

dsc_0194

O que, claro, imediatamente chamou a atenção a todas as outras...

This of course caught the attention of all the others...

dsc_0254

that started chasing her around the pen.

dsc_0213

No final toda a gente teve direito à(s) sua(s) passa(s).

In the end everyone had a few raisins to eat.

dsc_0264

Voltando a assuntos sérios.

Enough with that...its time to do some gardening work again. So after cleaning the chickens I started to mulch the onions and garlic,

dsc_0266

the strawberries (the few that were left from the summer -I'll have more in a few days)

dsc_0272

e as batatas.

and the potatoes. The straw mulching will prevent weeds and keep the soil moisture. With time the straw will decompose and fertilize the soil.

dsc_0271

After mulching I had a few new trees to plant. An orange tree (var. navellina), a tangerine tree (var. clementina), a peach tree (var. catarina), a nectarine (var. fantasy) and two plum trees (var. stanley and santa rosa).

dsc_0276

Around the vegetable garden things are a bit slower because of the low temperatures, but there are still some growing vegetables. Kale and beets,

dsc_0285

os alhos começam agora a despontar,

garlic is starting to grow,

dsc_0275

as favas já começam a florir,

broad beans are starting to bloom,

dsc_0280

broccoli are getting big enough to eat,

dsc_0287

and the rapini are starting to set seed. Ill try to keep some seeds to sow next year.
I also have peas sprouting, phisalis setting fruit and cauliflowers almost big enough to harvest.
