O pequenos melros desapareceram...É verdade. Triste, mas verdade. Ontem quando passei por lá para ver se estava tudo bem encontrei um ninho vazio. Os adultos ainda andam por lá mas os pequenitos desapareceram. Não sei ao certo o que terá acontecido mas para já tenho um suspeito. Antes que comecem a pensar que foi algum dos meus gatos posso dizer-lhes que tal era fisicamente impossivel. O ninho está feito sobre ramos finos demais para que um gato pudesse lá chegar.
Nos dias anteriores à desgraça vi por varias vezes um picanço barreteiro na arvore onde o ninho está, por isso esse é para já o meu principal suspeito. Resta-me esperar que os adultos façam ninho noutro sitio, mas que não abandonem o meu jardim (durante este periodo as lagartas das couves desapareceram todas)
The baby blackbirds are gone... gone...nothing but an empty nest. Yesterday, when I went down there to see how things were, that's what I found, an empty nest. The adults were still around, but not even a sign of the babies. It was as if they were never there. I really don't know what happened, but I have a suspect (and no, it's not one of my cats. The nest is built in branches that could not hold a cat's weight). The day before I've seen a Woodchat shrike in the tree where the nest was built, so, for now that is my main suspect.
I just hope the adults will built another nest, but wont leave my garden (the vegetable garden was free of caterpillars during this period)

Oh what a pity about the baby blackbirds. Unfortunately this happens sometimes. Let's hope the parents will try again with a new nest.

Pode ser que eles tentem outra vez, no ano passado o meu sogro tinha um ninho nas vindimas e o casal de melros deu três ninhadas.

How disappointing Gintonio. The shrike here are very hard on bird nests too. I hope your blackbirds try again and are successful.

"Woodchat shrike"--that sounds vicious.
How sad. That is why I try not to look into any bird nests & I hate when one nests in the Magnolia outside the window. Baby birds are just such fragile things, I hate to get attached to them.
yolanda, well that's just live...I still see the parents in the garden (mostly ear...) so I trust they have found another nesting place.

jrmr, costumam fazer 3 ninhadas por ano, mas duvido q voltem a utilizar o mesmo ninho. Este já perdeu o factor segurança.
chuck b. they don't look vicious at all, they are rather small birds, but the prey on small birds, reptiles and large insects. And they have the nasty habit of impaling them, so my blackbirds didn't have a pleasant end.
mr mcgregor's daughter, you are right. This was the first time I ever found so was really excited about it. Oh well...that's the way nature works, some have to dye so others will survive.
