Os primeiros tomates/First ripe tomatoes

Finalmente chegou o dia de colher os primeiros tomates maduros! Pois, eu também não entendo o porquê desta minha excitação toda, afinal de contas eu nem sequer gosto de tomates. Por isso a não ser que algum amigo (isto é para ti lú) ou familiar se mostre particularmente interessado nos sugeitos estes vão ser secos e conservados em azeite (desta forma espero já conseguir comê-los, é o gosto do tomate crú que não suporto)


Finally the big day has arrived! Honestly I can't understad why I'm all this excited, I don't even like tomatoes, but I guess it is the sence of fullfilment that comes with harvesting something you grew from seed. Anyway my first tomatoes were picked and unless some friend or familly shows a lot of interest in them really soon they will be sun dried and preserved in olive oil (I'm hoping to be able to eat them like that since its the raw tomato flavor that I dislike)

Suporte para os tomateiros/Staking tomato plants

Ontem andei a colocar suportes para os tomateiros. É a primeira vez que crio tomates, e nem me passou pela cabeça que realmente precisassem de suporte. E claro, à boa maneira portuguesa, lá fui colocar umas canas, à ultima da hora, e amarrar os tomateiros para que os frutos não fiquem no chão, nem os ramos se partam. Tenho visto nos blogues americanos um tipo de suporte chamado "gaiola para tomateiros" que me parece esteticamente muito mais agradavel e mais facil de utilizar que as canas. No proximo ano estou tentado a constuir umas. E vocês que tipo de suporte usam para os tomateiros?

Spent yesterday morning in the vegetable garden staking the tomato plants, among other chores. Since its my first year growing tomatoes, I hadn't realized that tomato plants really needed staking. I've seen tomato cages in some of the american blogs, and I really find them aesthetically pleasing, but i'm not sure how they work (though I think it will probably be easier than staking the plants). Maybe next year I will try to build a few of those. What about you, do you stake your tomatoes or use a tomato cage

As flores da coraleira (Erythrina cristagalli) estão a abrir. Bem, na verdade apenas algumas conseguiram chegara a bom porto e presentear-nos com a sua beleza. As temperaturas altissimas que temos tido nos ultimos dias têm feito com que a maior parte dos botões morra queimado antes mesmo de abrir, outro embora ainda não mortos perderam a cor devido à forte luz solar. Vista de longe a árvore ainda tem bom aspecto, com as longas espigas florais cor de coral, mas qdo vistas de perto as flores estão com um ar miseravel. Ainda agora Julho começou e eu já estou farto do calor!

Cockspur coral tree flowers are opening. Well, in reality only a few of them are managing to do so. The high temperatures we've experiencing the last few days (35-40ºC) have killed most of the flowers even before they open. When we look from far the tree still looks nice with its red flowers ready to bloom, but when we look at the individual flowers they are a mess. It's only the first of July and I'm already hoping for Summer to end soon!

Uma das coraleiras que o meu vizinho me ofereceu está quase a florir. Estou ansioso por ver ao vivo estas magnificas flores.

One of the two cockspur coral trees given to me by my neighbor is about to bloom. I can hardly wait!

Mais novidades da horta.../Lots of things going on in the veg garden...

Que me perdoem os que acham que já chega de falar na horta e que o jardim é que é...falar da horta para quê?As hortaliças são tão desinteressantes... (se há alguém que pense assim por aí), mas aí vem mais um post (publicação? ainda não consegui acertar com o raio da palavra certa em português...) sobre os progressos na horta. Com o tempo quente e a falta de àgua a actividade no jardim diminui. Em contrapartida os trabalhos na horta duplicam, temos de regar, fertilizar, colher os legumes e frutas que possam ser colhidos. Por isso nada mais justo que dedicar um pouco mais de atençõ à horta e deixarmos o jardim um pouco de lado (prometo que lá voltaremos logo que se justifique).

I hope that those of you that are tired of reading about the vegetable garden (if anyone is...) will forgive me, but here comes another vegetable garden post. With all the hot dry weather the garden tends to slow dow a bit. Meanwhile in the veg garden things start to growand bloom everywhere, so I feel that it's only fair for me to spend a bit more time writing about it and less time writing about the flower garden (we will go back there as soon as possible).

E que há de tão importante na horta que justifique tanta atenção? Bem... além do primeiro melão e da primeira amora madura?(que já agora foram acontecimentos bastante importantes, devo dizer)....talvez o facto dos primeiros feijões estarem a começar a crescer?

So, what is happening in the garden that is so important? Well...apart from the first melon, and the first ripe blackberry from the last post? (those were really important things..I might add) Well...maybe that the first Dog Beans are forming in their pods?

Ou talvez o facto de já ter apanhado a minha segunda couve-flor?

Or maybe that I harvested my second cauliflower?

Ou a minha primeira melancia que está a crescer de dia para dia?

Or that my first watermelon is growing nicelly?

Ou talvez o facto de já existirem três a boboras a crescer neste momento? Não sei se serão coisas suficientemente importantes para vocês, mas para mim são fantásticas!

Or maybe that there are three winter squashes growing at the moment? I really don't know if you will find this important or interesting enough, but for me this is really cool important stuff!
