Na horta /In the vegetable garden

As grandes novidades aconteceram na horta.

There's lots of news about the veg garden.



Finalmente consegui arranjar tempo para fazer uma vedação como deve ser na horta. A anterior não conseguia manter os cães do lado de fora. Não que eles tenham faito grandes estragos à horta, mas as visitas ao compostor, para comer pão bolorento não me agradavam nada.
Com a nova vedação aproveitei para aumentar a horta para o dobro (ficou agora com aproximadamente 250 m2), o que me vai permitir plantar muito mais coisas (em quantidade,mas principalmente, em qualidade).

In the last few weeks I have, at last, built a new fence around the vegetable garden. The old one was a a joke, and could't keep the dogs out of the veg garden. They were quite well behaved, not damaging any vegetables, but the visits to the compost bin in search of moldy bread were really annoying me.
With the new fence, I've also expanded the veg garden to twice as big (it is now 250 square meters), which will allow me to grow a biger quantity and variety of vegetables.



Outra das novidades é o vermicompostor. Já há algum tempo que queria construir um, mas não conseguia encontrar quem me fornecesse as minhocas. Recentemente encontrei, através da net, uma empresa algarvia que as comercializa e lá pude iniciar mais este projecto.

Another new thing is the wormery. I've been wanting to build one for a long time but was having difficulties finding someone that would sell me the worms. Well, I finally have found some worms, so I could start the "worm project".



E a novidade mais recente, e também a mais esperada (por mim, pelo menos) é o galinheiro. Pois é, vamos ter galinhas! Já há anos que pensava em adquirir umas quantas galinhas, mas ia sempre adiando. Desta vez, resolvi não adiar mais, e já q estavamos numa de construções lá construimos mais isto. Não será digno de receber um qualquer prémio de arquitectura, mas estou muito contente com o meu galinheiro. Agora só faltam as galinhas, poucas, só 4 ou 5, porque o objectivo é comer os ovos e não os bichos em si. Talvez durante a proxima semana haja novidades...

And the biggest and most wanted project of all (at least by me) is the chicken coop/pen. Yes, that's right, we will have chickens! It's been a while since I wanted to have some chickens, and since I was in the "building mode" I decided that this was it, I was going to build the chicken pen. Its not going to win any architecture prize, but I am pretty happy with it. Now I only have to get the chickens...maybe next week we will have news about it.



De resto na horta estamos numa fase de transição entre as culturas de Verão e as culturas de Outono/Inverno. Os tomateiros estão a dar os ultimos frutos (provavelmente com esta chuva vão ficar todos rachados/estragados)

The vegetable garden is in a transition fase between summer vegetables and winter vegetables. The last tomatoes are still ripening (though with this rain most of them will prbably crack)



Os fisalis estão a dar os primeiros frutos. Não vai ser uma grande colheita, mas para plantas que foram plantadas apenas há 2 meses não está mal.

The first physalis (ground cherries?) are forming. Not a great crop, but the plants have only been planted 2 months ago.



As beringelas, continuam a dar frutos. Deram muito poucos, talvez porque já foram plantadas muito tarde. No próximo ano tenho de as semear mais cedo.

Eggplants are still blooming. Not to many fruits, but I think that was because they were planted too late in the season. Next year I will have to sow them earlier.



E as couves e beterrabas semeadas há 5 semanas estão a crescer bem e já têm bom tamanho.

Beets and cabbages sowed 5 weeks ago are growing well.



As romãs estão a começar a amadurecer.

Pomegranates are ripening



A toranjeira, plantada no inicio do Verão, começou agora a crescer. Será que este ano já terei alguma toranja?

The grapefruit that I planted in early summer is now starting to grow. I wonder if I will have any fruits this year.
