Visitas/Visitors

O jardim ontem à tardinha estava cheio destas pequenas mariposas. Não são os insectos mais bonitos que por lá aparecem, mas foi interessante ver como os visitantes variam conforme a hora do dia.

Yesterday, at dusk, the garden was full of these little nocturnal buterflies. Not the pretiest little guys, but it was interesting to see how garden visiters change throughout the day.

Assim está melhor /That's more like it

A outra Alcea rosea, também criada a partir de semente já floriu. Também não é o rosa escuro que estava à espera, mas é um tom muito agradável que a outra. Esta decididamente fica, a outra...ainda não sei.

We have another hollyhock blooming in the garden. This one, while still not burgundy, is ina much nicer shade of pink. This one is a keeper, the other one..I'm still not sure.

Chegou o Verão /Summer is here

Sim, eu sei, ainda não é Verão oficialmente, mas com as temperaturas que de repente se fazem sentir acho que podemos dizer que o Verão já chegou, e para ficar aparentemente.

Ok, so the calendar says its still spring, I know, but with the rising temperatures of the last few days I think we can agree that summer is here to stay.



Esta é talvez a pior altura do ano para o meu jardim. O calor começa a ser demasiado para eu poder disfrutar dele e só de manhã cedo ou à tardinha se pode andar por lá.

Summer is, probably, the worse season in my garden. It's usually too hot to be outside and you can only enjoy the garden early in the morning or late in the afternoon.



Por outro lado o calor aliado à falta de rega cria uma dificuldade acrescida para as plantas, que nalguns casos, se começam a ressentir. Muitas das plantas ainda não estão estabelecidas e ainda não conseguem sobreviver sem rega ou com regas muito espaçadas o que me obriga a regar pelo menos uma vez por semana.

Also the plants are too stressed by the high temperatures/low irrigation combination and some of them don't look their best. Many my plants are still not sufficiently developed to cope with the no water rule I want to impose, so I've been watering the garden at least once a week.



Algumas das plantas primaveris, como é o caso das Chasmanthe, começam agora a secar o que não contribui em nada para o bom aspecto do jardim. Tenho de arranjar tempo para as cortar de vez e refazer este canteiro. Tenho de arranjar algumas plantas que o preencham durante o Verão equanto as Chasmanthe repousam.

Some of the spring plants are drying and don't look their best. The Chasmanthe is almost dry and really looks bad. I need to find some time to cut it and plant something for summer.



Por outro lado, nesta altura começam a florir algumas das minhas flores preferidas, como é o caso destes Allium, que aqui casam perfeitamente com as gramineas.

But on the other hand summer is also a time to enjoy some of my favorites like this drumstick allium. I really like the way they look against the grasses.



A Achilea também está em plena floração. Infelizmente não se vêem muito à venda estas plantas. Gostava de conseguir mais algumas noutras cores.

Achilea is also blooming away. Unfortunately this is not a common plant around here. I really would like to find some more in a few different colors.



Esta é uma novidade Eschscholzia californica. São flores muito simples mas, por isso mesmo lindissimas.

Eschscholzia californica is a new plant to me. I really like its simple orange flowers.



Outra novidade Alcea rosea, criada de semente. Deveria ser de um rosa mais escuro. Não sai bem se gosto desta cor,sobretudo perto das Salvia leucantha mas por agora vai ficando.

And this is another new plant. I grew it from seed and I was expecting a darker pink. I'm not too sure about this one, but I think I will give it a try.



A romanzeira está coberta de flores o que sempre desvia o olhar da confusão de Chasmanthes moribundas na parte de trás.

Pomegranate tree is blooming also. The red flowers keep your attention from the Chasmanthe mess in the background.



E por falar em árvores floridas, a Albizia está a dar as suas primeiras flores de sempre. Estas flores foram o motivo pelo qual a escolhi para o jardim. Poucas coisas serão mais bonitas que uma albizia em plena floração.

And speaking of blooming trees. Albizia is finally blooming. These pink flowers were the main reason for me to choose this tree. Few things are as beautiful as a grown Albizia in full bloom.

A fêmea de toutinegra dos valados. Agora tenho a certeza de que têm ninho no jardim.

Na horta / The vegetable garden

Mizuna, couve" Lancinato", feijão francês, couve "Russian Red" e agelgas
Mizuna, "Lancinato" kale, wax beans, "Russian Red" kale, swiss chard.

Na horta os vegetais continuam a crescer e aos poucos as camas vão ficando cheias.

The vegetables are growing like mad in the vegetable garden. Some of the raised beds are now full.

As alfaces estão no seu melhor e temos salada fresca todos os dias. Entretanto vou semeando mais para irem crescendo à medida que vamos comendo as maiores.

Estou cultivando muitas alfaces diferentes que significam que temos uma provisão fresca de verduras de salada cada dia. Estou semeando um pouco mais para ter uma colheita contínua.



Este ano semeei melões muito mais cedo, e estava muito contente com o seu crescimento. Já em estava a imaginar a comer uma bela fatia de melão...até que hoje descobri que oa melões são afinal pepinos. Não faço ideia de como é que fiz isto.


I was very happy with my melons this year, I sowed them earlier and they were growing very well. I could see myself eating a delicious melon slice...until today, when I found out that the melons were in fact cucumbers. How did this happen?



Só me resta esperar que os pepinos, plantados noutra cama, sejam na verdade melões...

I can only hope that the cucumbers, planted in another bed , are in fact melons...

Outras camas ainda não estão cheias, as plantas ainda não cresceram o suficiente. É o caso das courgettes, transplantadas recentemente.

Other beds are only starting to have plants. The courgette bed only recently received its first plants.



As pastinacas vão crescendo devagar. Acho que as devia ter semeado mais cedo...algumas não aguentaram o transplante por causa do calor (acho eu)

Parsnips are also growing slowly. I think I should have sowed them earlier..some of them were killed by the high temperatures we had in the last few weeks.



Outra das novidades deste ano é a soja. A ideia é colher soja para comer em fresco. São deliciosas, cozidas e salteadas como se fossem ervilhas.

Another new thing in the vegetable garden is soybeans. I want to harvest them and eat them as fresh beans. They taste great.



O grão de bico também está a crescer a bom ritmo.

Chickpeas are also growing well.



Embora tenha semeado as beringelas muito cedo, só agora ficaram prontas para serem transplantadas para a horta. Á face da experiencia do ano passado (e a pensar nisto), este ano plantei o dobro das plantas.

I sowed them very early this ear but, non the less, the aubergines were only ready for the vegetable garden recently. Since I had such a good experience last year (and because I was thinking about this), I planted twice as many plants as last year.




Finalmente os feijões começam a crescer. Depois de os ter semeado duas vezes e não ter nascido nada já começava a deseperar.

I finally have pole beans growing. I was starting to doubt I would have any after sowing them twice without results.



Os espinafres estão a começar a espigar, o que quer dizer que se acabaram por este ano. Já a pensar nisso tenho espinafre neozelandês a crescer noutra cama. O espinafre neozelandês tem a vantagem de crescer bem durante o tempo quente.

Spinach are bolting meaning that they've ended for this year. I have New Zealand spinach growing in another bed, so I wont be short of spinach during summer.



Os tomateiros começam a florir.

Tomatoes are blooming.



Será esta a primeira abóbora?

Could this be the first winter squash of the season?



E continuamos a colher fruta, morangos, framboesas...

I'm still harvesting strawberries and raspberries...



e alperces que começam agora a amadurecer.

and apricots that are now ripe.



Só daqui a um mês ou dois é que as nectarinas estarão maduras. Mal posso esperar!

I will have to wait at least one month before the nectarines start to ripe. I can hardly wait.

Tem passado a tarde toda para lá e para cá. Sempre com insectos no bico. Ou muito me engano ou tem ninho no Echium.

He's been coming and going all day. Always carrying some bug in its beak. I'm pretty sure he's nesting in the Echium.

As miúdas / The girls

Depois de postar a foto dos ovos lembrei-me que há muito tempo não vos dou noticias das miúdas. Hoje foi dia de limpar o galinheiro e pôr palha nova. É sempre uma grande excitação o dia de limpeza. Muita palha nova para esgravatar, sementes de trigo perdidas lá no meio.

After my last post I remember its been a while since I last posted about the girls. Today was clean up day which is always motif of excitement. Lots of new straw to scratch around, lots of lost wheat seeds amongst it.



Embora já não sejam tão assustadiças continuam muito nervosas e de modo algum me deixam chegar perto (a não ser quando tenho alguma guloseima, o que não era o caso hoje).

They are still very nervous birds and they just won't let me go near them without having a nervous fit. Unless, of course, I bring them some treat (which wasn't the case today) like tomatoes or grapes.



Além da palha nova outro motivo de excitação foi um pé de acelgas que lhes dei. Nesta altura há menos erva para lhes dar e qualquer verdura da horta é motivo de grande entusiasmo.

Today I brought them a different type of treat. A bunch of swiss chard that was bolting. There isn't any grass for me to give them at this time of year, so any greens I bring them from the veg garden are very welcome.



Além das verduras, continuam a comer ração, milho, trigo, pão e todos os restos de comida da casa. São uma excelente forma de reciclagem.

Apart from fresh greens they eat chicken feed, wheat, corn , bread and all the food leftovers. They are a great way to recycle.





A ver pelos ovos que põem todos os dias (3-4 por dia) estão bem felizes as minhas miúdas.

Judging by the eggs they are laying (3-4 a day) they are a bunch of very happy girls.
