Preciso de ajuda... /So, I need your help...

Não é frequente eu comprar plantas sem saber o que são. Quase sempre as minhas escolhas são pensadas, ponderadas e recuso-me a comprar plantas que não cumpram as exigencias do meu jardim (pouca rega e reduzida manutenção). Depois há as pechinchas, aquelas que embora não saibamos o que são parecem ser plantas adequadas e ainda por cima a preços irresistiveis.

It's not very often that I buy a plant I don't know. When I go to the nurseries I usually know exactly what I'm looking for and if I find something else I think might do well in my garden I like to go home and read about it before buying it. I like to be sure my plants are tough, drought resistant, low maintenance plants. But every now and then I'm faced with a bargain I cant say no to, even when I'm not sure it will be the right plant for my garden.



Foi o que aconteceu com esta. Não faço ideia do que seja (estava rotulada como Ballota mas não me parece...) mas à primeira vista parece cumprir todos os requisitos (normalmente folhas cinzentas e coriáceas querem dizer que as plantas são resistentes à seca). Alem disso custava 1 euro (já nada custa um euro nos dias que correm!) por isso não resisti e embora não soubesse o seu nome (nem consequentemente os cuidados que necessita) arrisquei e trouxe-a para casa.

That's what happened with this little plant. I have no idea of its name (which if you'd know me you'd see how annoying that is) but at first glance seems to be a little drought tolerant plant ( grey and coriaceous leaves usually means that ). On top of that it costed 1 euro (come on, nothing costs 1 euro these days), so even though I didn't know what plant it was, or how to care for it I bought it just the same.



É aqui que vocês entram...De certeza que alguém por aí a sabe identificar. Não? Eu e a plantita ficaremos eternamente gratos.

And that is where you dear readers come into this story. Can anyone id this little plant for me? Please?

Ervilhas / Peas

Este não foi um bom ano para as ervilhas na horta do"jardim com gatos". Germinaram pouco, produziram quase nada. As ervilhas de quebrar que o ano passado produziram tão bem este ano pouco mais deram que 4-5 vagens. Não sei o que se terá passado mas provavelmente o facto de as ter semeado num dos canteiros novos, onde nada tinha sido plantado antes e no ter acrescentado nenhuma matéria orgânica ao solo poderá ter estado na origem do problema.

This wasn't a very good year for peas here at "jardim com gatos". They mostly didn't germinate and the few that did hardly produced any pods. Even the snap peas that last year were such a goos crop failed to produce more than 4-5 pods. I'm not sure what happened here but I think it has to do with the fact that I sowed them in a new bed, one that was never planted before and I didn't even bothered to improve the soil. They must have found that was a very poor soil.



Também com as ervilhas "capucijners" que me foram oferecidas pela Yolanda, a taxa de germinação foi baixa. Mas no caso destas pelo menos as plantas que nasceram estão a crescer bem e já floriram e deram algumas vagens.
Esta é uma variedade holandesa antiga, usada principalmente como ervilha seca que é depois cozinhada. No entanto segundo a Yolanda são excelentes quando comidas frescas tal como as ervilhas a que nós estamos mais acostumados. Este ano não devo conseguir experimentá-las já que vou guardá-las todas para semente, mas saborosas ou não só o facto de terem estas vagens roxas é o suficiente para eu as querer ter a crescer na horta.

Also the "capucjners" peas, that Yolanda sent me, didn't grow that well. I planted them in good soil but even most of the seeds didn't germinate. The ones that did, are growing very well, blooming and already have some pods forming. These are an old dutch variety of soup peas, and they are traditionally eaten dry. However Yolanda says that they are delicious eaten fresh. I wont be tasting them this year as I want to keep seeds for next year. Nevertheless, even if they weren't that tasty their purple pods would win them a place in my garden.

Visitas na horta/Veg garden visitors

Andava pela horta quando encontrei esta larva de joaninha. Com o numero de joaninhas que encontrei este ano é de admirar não encontrar mais. Provavelmente andam por aí. Esta estava na ameixeira ocupada a comer afideos (são umas maquinas de comer afideos).

I found this ladybug larvae this morning in the veg garden. With the amount of ladybugs I found this year it amazes me that I don't find more larvae. They are probably around, I just don't see them. This one was in the plum tree eating aphids away (they are amazing aphid eaters)



Alguém sabe identificar este? Encontrei dois ou três mas não sei se são bons ou maus. Pelo sim pelo não deixei-os ficar.

Can anyone id this little guy? I found a few of them but I don't know if they are friend or foe. I let them be just in case.



Uma aranha lobo, uma das minhas favoritas. Esta ainda era pequena, mas atingem tamanhos bastante consideráveis.

A wolf spider, one of my favorite spiders. This was a little one, but they do get quite big.

E isto, alguém sabe o que é? São ovos de louvadeus. Não faço ideia se já terão nascido . As louvadeus são outro insecto útil que convém ter por perto. Alimentam-se de grande numero de espécies de insectos, muitos deles prejudiciais à horta.

And does anyone know what this is? These are praying mantis eggs. I wonder if they have hatched. Praying mantis are very useful insects in the veg garden, they prey on all sort of nasty bugs.

Trabalhos na horta /Vegetable garden improvements

Tenho andado ocupado na horta. Já há algum tempo que queria fazer uns canteiros deste tipo (os ingleses chamam-lhes "raised bed").Como tinha uma série de paletes de madeira prontas para ir para a fogueira lembrei-me de as aproveitar para os construir. Não sei quanto tempo é que vão durar até a madeira apodrecer, mas pelo menos reciclo esta madeira toda e sempre poupo algum por enquanto.

I told you I was busy in the vegetable garden. I've been building raised beds. I wanted to build them for some time now, but wasn't willing to spend all the money the wood would cost me. Then I remembered I had a few pallets ready to go into the fire and decided to use them.They wont be very durable, but when they start to rot, i'll start worrying about that.



Com os canteiros a horta fica com um ar bastante mais organizado. Além disso não tenho de estar sempre a dizer às pessoas onde podem ou não podem pisar.

With the raised beds the veg garden looks a lot more organized. And I don't have to keep telling people where they can or can not step on.



Outras vantagens deste tipo de canteiros é que permitem trabalhar o solo melhor. É mais fácil arrancar as ervas daninhas, o solo mantém-se mais solto e aquece mais depressa, permitindo semear e plantar antes do tempo (quando o solo ainda está frio demais para que as sementes germinem)

The other advantages of these is that the soil is easier to work, the weeds are easier to pull, and the soil is warmer which allows seeds to germinate sooner.



O proximo passo será fazer alguma coisa para evitar o crescimento das daninhas nos caminhos entre os canteiros. Estou cá a pensar em gravilha...

Next I will have to do something about all those weeds in the paths. I'm thinking maybe gravel...

E provavelmente as ultimas. Os caracóis tomaram-lhes o gosto e têm-me comido todas novas flores (os caules, para ser mais exacto). Este ano está a ser terrível com os malditos caracóis...

And most likely the last... Snails have been very busy around the new flower stalks. They eat the stalks breaking themeven before the flowers can open. Snails are proving to be a very big problem in the garden this year.

Ponto de encontro/ Insect central

O Echium candicans (lá venho eu falar dele outra vez) está em plena floração, tornando-se no ponto de encontro de todos os insectos que visitam o jardim. É impressionante a quantidade de diferentes espécies de insectos que por lá andam.

Echium candicans is in full bloom at this time of year. The blue flowers aren't only appealing to me, every insect that comes to the garden will visit them. Its amazing how many different insect species I was able to find this afternoon.

Fotos antigas /Old cat pictures

Encontrei estas fotografias antigas, de há cerca de 10 anos (quando ainda não sabia o q era uma camera digital) Não são as melhores fotografias do mundo, mas foram umas das minhas primeiras (já na altura gostava de fotografar gatos).

I found a few old cat pictures dated more than 10 years ago. Not the best pictures in the world, but they were my first atempt .

Novidades na horta / New things in the vegetable garden

Andei ocupado na horta esta manhã. Comecei por fazer um canteiro com uns barrotes reciclados. Neste canteiro estão plantados morangueiros (como aumentei a área vou poder plantar mais alguns) , framboesas e amoras.

I was busy in the vegetable garden this morning, Started by doing my first raised bed with some recycled logs. The raised bed is planted with strawberries, blackberries and raspberries.



Depois refiz os meus compostores. Agora tenho 3 em vez de 2. Assim poderei compostar mais coisas, e o processo de enchimento dos compostores torna-se mais fácil.

I then rebuilt my compost bins (I now have 3 instead of the former 2). This way I'll be able to compost a lot more stuff.



E para terminar construí um outro canteiro. Este canto sempre esteve desaproveitado porque estava cheio de pedras. Retirei todas (ou quase todas) as pedras e como não sabia o que lhes fazer usei-as para construir um murete que delimita o canteiro.

And to finish the morning I built another raised bed. This corner of the vegetable garden was not used because it was full of stones. I removed all (or most) of the stones and used them to built a small drywall that will work as a raised bed.



Ficou um murete um bocado manhoso mas acho que serve lindamente. Vou utilizar este canteiro para plantar mais morangueiros e talvez mais framboesas.

Its a shabby looking drywall, but it works fine. I'll use this raised bed for more strawberries and another raspberries bush, I think.
