Que seca! /I'm bored!

O tempo está péssimo por aqui, ventos fortes, chuvas intermitentes, frio...Nem os cães querem sair de casa. Com um tempo destes o que é que um tipo pode fazer no seu dia de folga? Sair com os cães nem pensar, jardinagem muito menos, o galinheiro e as galinhas parece que vão pelos ares...

Weather is lousy, strong winds, rain , cold... Not even the dogs wanto to go outside. So, what is a guy to do on his day off? Walk the dogs? No. Gardening? Don't even think about it .The chicken coop and chickens
were almost blown away by the wind....



Só resta uma hipótese. Semear, semear, semear! Já lá vão 4 tabuleiros de alfaces, nabos, beterrabas e cebolas. Ainda tenho outros 4 para semear com couves diversas, pepinos, canonigos e acelgas.
Este ano vou experimentar semear cenouras em tabuleiro e transplantar (já que por sementeira directa nunca consegui nada)

So, there is only one thing left. Sow, sow, sow! I have already sown 4 trays with lettuce, beets, onions and turnips. I still have other 4 to sow with cucumbers, swiss chard and salad corn. I'm also trying to sow carrots in a tray and transplant them latter on into the veg garden (since they refuse to grow when I direct sow them)

Depois da chuva /After a rainy night

Sim, eu sei ...a foto está péssima...mas foi o q se arranjou no meio de uma chuvada e de um ataque de raiva.

É este o estado em que estão os meus Allium giganteum. Depois de os procurar durante anos este ano finalmente consegui comprar 3 bolbos. Começaram a crescer à coisa de 2 semanas, e eu fiquei contente... Hoje, depois das chuvas desta noite terem acordado a hordes de caracois esfomeados, deparei com este triste espectáculo. Será que vão conseguir sobreviver, crescer e florir? A ver vamos...
Para já tomei a resolução de que nenhum caracol que se atravesse no meu caminho sobreviverá!

This is what my Allium giganteum looked like this morning. These are 3 bulbs I finally came across after looking for them for a long time. They started to grow 2 weeks ago and I was quite happy to see them looking good. Until this morning, that is. An army of snails seems to have munched on them during last night. I guess the rain awaked them and they were hungry. Will they survive and bloom? I hope so, but...
This is what you get for being nice to those rascals! From now on no snail shall survive in my garden!

Voltou a chuva / Rain is back

Voltou a chuva. Vamos ter aguaceiros nos próximos dias. Menos mal, que a horta já andava a precisar de rega. Este amigo é que não deve achar grande piada à coisa!

Rain is back and we have a few wet days ahead of us. Good for the veg garden that needs some watering. Bad, very bad for this little fellow.

Toca a trabalhar / Earning their food

Finalmente as 4 miúdas começaram a "botar". Com uma média de 3-4 ovos diários começo a ter ovos a mais. Vai daí vendi ontem a primeira dúzia de ovos. Acho que vou pôr as miúdas a trabalhar para ganharem o seu sustento (impressão minha ou isto não soa muito bem...).

Finally all the girls are laying. This means that I'm having 3-4 fresh eggs a day, too many even for me! So I decided to sell them. I sold the first dozen to a friend yesterday. I think its time the girls start earning their food...

Novas culturas / New crops

Oca


Yacón

Graças ao Patrick, que teve a gentileza de me enviar alguns tuberculos,vou experimentar duas novas culturas este ano. E quando digo novas, são mesmo novas, nunca as provei e só tinha "ouvido" falar delas na net. São elas a oca e o yacón. São duas plantas das quais se comem as raízes. Não faço ideia se se vão dar bem por cá ou se vou gostar delas. A ver vamos.

Thanks to Patrick, who was kind enough to send me a few tubers, I will be trying two new crops this year. Oca and yacón. I had no idea about them until recently and I really have no idea about their taste, or even if they will succeed in my climate. We will see.
