Outra vez as batatas... / Potatoes again...

Depois de ter lido os comentarios ao post de ontem, principalmente o do Patrick, que dizia que provavelmente se tratava de um virus, resolvi arrancar as plantas doentes e desfazer-me delas. Pode ser que a doença (se é disso que se trata) não chegue a afectar as outras plantas.
Vai daí esta manhã lá fui até à horta decidido a acabar com o sofrimento das pobres plantas. Qual não é a minha surpresa quando começo a desenterrar batatas com bom tamanho e aspecto delicioso! Vinte tuberculos, alguns dos quais de tamanho consideravel. Nada mau para três plantas moribundas, não?

After reading all your comments, specially Patrick's comment talking about potato virus I decided to destroy the affected plants. Who knows, maybe I can still save the other plants.
So there I went this morning, to the vegetable garden and started pulling the plants out. Surprise, surprise, I started pulling potatoes out too. Delicious looking, good sized potatoes! At the end I had 20 potatoes in my basket, some of them with a nice size. Not bad for three dying plants, hey?

Problemas com as batatas / Potato problems

Passa-se qualquer coisa de muito errado com as minhas batatas. Três das plantas começaram a murchar, sem qualquer motivo aparente. As folhas parecem ter sido cortadas/ratadas na base e começas a murchar.

There is something very wrong with my potatoes. Three of the plants started to wilt with no apparent reason. The leaves seam to have been cut by the base and start dying)



Quando examinei as plantas de perto a unica coisa que encontrei foram estas formigas (pelo menos parecem formigas) minusculas. Poderão ser elas as responsaveis pelo que se está a passar com as plantas?

On a closer look the only abnormal thing I can find are these tiny ants ( I think they are ants). Could they be causing the plant to die?

Estas são as outras plantas, plantadas no mesmo solo, recebem as mesmas regas, a mesma fertilização. Como podem ver estão optimas.

These are my other potato plants. They have the same soil, same fertilization, same watering as the sick ones. As you can see they look great.

Entre as batatas sãs e as batatas doentes está plantada uma fila de beterrabas. As beterrabas estão saudaveis e a crescer (Por falar nisso... experimentei beterrabas assadas no forno e adorei! Parece que afinal não vou só comer as folhas). Estas batatas foram uma experiencia, mas não gostava de as perder antes de poder colher as batatas. Alguém por aí tem alguma ideia?

Between the sick potatoes and the healthy ones is a row of beets (By the way, I tried them roasted with olive olive and garlic and they were delicious. Guess I wont be eating the leaves only). These potatoes were just an experiment but I wouldn't like to lose them before harvesting some potatoes. Does any one have a clue to this problem?

O canteiro das hortelãs /The mint garden

A canteiro das hortelãs começa a cobrir-se de flores. A primeira é a flor do poejo (Mentha pulegium). Não são flores espectaculares e para algumas pessoas podem mesmo ser insignificantes, mas eu gosto muito delas. As hortelãs (Mentha) são das minhas plantas favoritas, não porque sejam espectaculares, tenham grandes flores ou folhas de cor atractiva, mas porque cheiram bem. Só por isso... Nada me dá mais prazer que passar por este canteiro e tocar nas plantas e sentir-lhes o cheiro. E só por isso têm lugar assegurado no meu jardim.

The mint garden is starting to bloom. And the first blooms belong to pennyroyal (Mentha pulegium). The flowers are not spectacular and some might even consider them as insignificant, but I like them. Mints are among my favorite plants, not because they are very beautiful plants, with lovely flowers or colorful leaves, but because they smell good. That's it...Nothing gives me more pleasure than to stroke the leaves as I pass by these plants and feel their scent. And because of that and that alone they will always have a place in my garden.

Na horta / In the vegetable garden

Na horta as coisas continuam a crescer às mil maravilhas (quando vista assim de cima fico com a impressão de que o espaço podia ser melhor aproveitado...no proximo ano teremos de tratar disso) e algumas culturas já precisam de ser colhidas.

Things are going well in the vegetable garden (from this upper view the space seems to be underused...something to keep in mind for next year's vegetable garden), and some crops need to be harvested.




As alfaces já estão com bom tamanho para serem colhidas. No entanto ando a experimentar colher apenas as folhas e deixar a planta no sitio. Novas folhas voltam a crescer e a mesma planta produz quase o dobro.

Letucces can be havasted already, but I'm trying the cut and come again technique. If it works the same plant will produce almost twice as much.


Os rabanetes estão quase bons para serem colhidos, entretanto já fiz nova sementeira.

Radishes are almost the right size to be croped. Meanwhile I already have some more growing.

No canteiro das couves as coisas também estão bem lançadas. As couves chinesas precisam de ser colhidas antes de começarem a grelar, as couves flor estão a começar a produzir cabeças, os repolhos estão cada vez maiores.

In the brassica patch things are starting to look good. I need to crop those chinese cabbages before they bolt, the collards are growing and the cauliflowers are producing heads.

As beterrabas também estão quase com um bom tamanho para serem apanhadas. Vou ter de as oferecer, uma vez que não gosto de beterrabas (semeei-as só para comer as folhas em saladas).

Beets are almost ready to be harvested, which means I will have to find someone who wants them since I don't eat beets, nor does anyone in my family ( I sowed them just for the leaves which taste great in salads)


As courgettes têm crescido imenso com as chuvas dos ultimos dias e já podem ser apanhadas.

I already started cropping some courgettes, they are growing like mad with these last days of rain.


Feijão verde, a começar a crescer. Atrasei-me um bocado com a sementeira dos feijões, por esta altura já deviam estar muito maiores.

Pole beans (green beans? The english classification of beans is too confuse to me...). I was a bit late with sowing beans so they aren't as big as they should by now.


Estes são feijões rasteiros que o Patrick me enviou. Não parecem estar a crescer tão bem quanto eu gostaria e muitos deles nem chegaram a germinar.

These are bush beans that Patrick was kind enough to send me. However they don't seem to be growing as well as expected (surely not as well as the pole beans) and lots of them didn't even germinate. Maybe my soil is not the best for them.


Os primeiros tomates. Estes são tomates cereja e como também não como tomate cru estou a pensar em secar e guardar em azeite a maior parte deles.

My first tomatoes. These are cherry tomatoes and I intend to sundry them and keep them in olive oil. This way I will be able to use them for cooking (in case you are wondering, I can't eat raw tomato)

As peras continuam a crescer, e afinal não tenho apenas uma como cheguei a pensar mas sim cinco.

Pears are growing steadily. As it turns out I don't have only one pear growing but five.


As groselhas já estão maduras (ou estavam...) e foram devoradas in situ logo após a fotografia.

Red currants were ripe and vanished immediately after this shot.


As nectarinas também crescem de dia para dia. Pena serem só duas...

Nectarines are also getting huge. Unfortunately there are only two of them...


E, adivinham o que é isto? É a primeira melancia que se está a desenvolver! Adoro melancia.

And can you guess what this is? It's my first watermelon growing. Boy, do I love watermelon!

Colheita do dia / Today's harvest

Senhoras e senhores, temos composto! Depois de cerca de 1 ano de iniciado o processo finalmente fiz a primeira colheita de composto. Não é incrivel ver que todo aquele lixo que pusemos dentro do compostor acaba por se transformar nesta magnifica terra preta que mais tarde irá alimentar os legumes da horta?

Ladies and gentleman, we have compost! It took its time almost a year, but today I "harvested" my first compost. Isn't it amazing to see that all the "garbage" we throw into the compost bin turns up into this wonderful black compost?



Há cerca de um ano, quando comecei a sonhar com uma horta, comprei este compostor. Para ser sincero não gosto muito dele e estou a pensar em deixar de o utilizar . Se a ideia for colocar os restos de cozinha e do jardim lá dentro e esperar que compostem sem termos de fazer mais nada, funciona bem, o processo é lento mas funciona. Mas se quizermos acelerar a compostagem e revolver a pilha de composto com alguma regularidade, então a coisa já não funciona tão bem. O compostor é demasiado alto.

About a year ago, when I first started to dream about a vegetable garden, I bought this compost bin. To be honest I don't like it very much and I will no longer use it. Its too high, which makes turning the compost a very difficult task. So, if you just want to throw yore vegetable waste into the compost bin and wait (a long time) for it to transform into compost this might work for you. But if you want to speed up things a little, by turning the compost regularly, than this is not the right compost bin.


Quando comecei a horta resolvi construir estes dois outros compostores (se se pode chamar construção aquilo...). Estes funcionam muito melhor, porque não só têm muito maior capacidade, mas também porque a tarefa de revolver o composto é muito mais facil. A compostagem torna-se bastante mais rápida. O compostor da esquerda foi iniciado em Dezembro já se pode retirar composto de lá (o outro compostor levou um ano a fazer a mesma coisa).

That is why, when I started the vegetable garden; I decided to build these other two compost bins. They might not look as great as the other one (I have to work on their looks) but they are far easier to use. Turning the compost becomes very easy and the composting process a lot faster. Just to have an idea, the compost bin on the left was started in December and yoy can already harvest some compost (in the other one it took about a year)

Por isso para já o compostor mais antigo, o comprado, vai servir apenas para armazenar o composto produzido pelos outros dois. Tenho planos e no futuro o transformar num vermicompostor, mas isso é outra história.

So, for now, the plastic compost bin will be used only to store all the compost I don't use immediately. With time I have plans to turn it into a vermicomposter, but that is a all different story.

Projectos II /Projects II

Continuo a trabalhar no jardim, desta vez ando a terminar os caminhos de gravilha em volta dos canteiros. Com o tempo (e muito trabalho) o jardim irá ficar todo coberto de gravilha. Além do aspecto estético (sempre achei os jardins com gravilha muito bonitos), a gravilha serve de cobertura dos canteiros, ajudando a diminuir o crescimento das ervas daninhas e a manter a humidade do solo. Sob a gravilha tenho colocado uma camada de folhas de jornal, que serve para, ainda mais , difiultar o crescimento das daninhas e manter a humidade do solo.

I'm still working in the garden, and at the moment I'm graveling the paths. With time (and a lot of work from me) the garden will be all covered in gravel. I've always liked gravel gardens but that was not the only thing that made me choose this type of garden. Gravel acts as mulch, making it more difficult for the weeds to grow and keeping the soil moist. I've been using a layer of newspaper under the gravel, which makes it more difficult for the weeds to grow, keeping the soil moisture.

Infelizmente o resto do jardim,ainda, está com este aspecto. Mas não por muito mais tempo, esperemos.
