Um prémio! / An award!

Há uns dias atrás o "jardim com gatos" recebeu um prémio foi premiado pelo blog "roses and stuff". Este prémio circula na blogosfera e destina-se a premiar blogs que valem a pena ser lidos Imaginam como fiquei feliz ao recebê-lo, eu que até há algum tempo atrás achava que as visitas ao meu blog eram "fruto do acaso".

Ao aceitar este prémio é suposto utilizá-lo para premiar outros 10 blogs que gosto de ler e que acho que devem ser premiados. A dificuldade está em escolher apenas 10 da vasta lista de blogs que leio regularmente. Mas aqui vai:



A few days ago roses and stuff gave me this award. I'm sure you can imagine how delighted I was to have received it considering I'm not blogging for that long.


Now I have to chose 10 other blogs that I consider should be awarded. Choosing 10 blogs from the huge list of blogs I usualy read will be an incredible dificult task, but here it goes:

Manhã chuvosa /Rainy morning

Depois de semanas de tempo quente e seco voltaram as chuvas. Ao contrário da maior parte das pessoas estas chuvas deixam-me contente. Num jardim onde as plantas só são regadas em caso de extrema necessidade( a ultima rega foi em Setembro) estes dias de chuva são sempre bem vindos.

It's raining. After a few weeks of hot dry weather the rain decided to come back. Not that I'm too bothered by it, I actually like a rainy day. It means my plants will receive some water and don't have to water them in the near future (last time I watered them was last September).

Novos vizinhos /New neighbors

Temos vizinhos novos! É verdade uma nova familia mudou-se para o meu jardim. Uma familia de melros. Decobri-os ontem, por acaso, nesta amendoeira. Conseguem ver o ninho? Não? Vamos vê-lo mais de perto.

We have new neighbors! There is a new family living in m garden. A family of blackbirds. I just found them in this almond tree. Can you see the nest? No? Well lets have a closer look then.



Aí está ele! Tão perfeitinho!
Ultimamente tinha visto um melro macho a cirandar pela horta, mas sempre achei que estaria interessado nos morangos (embora eles não aparececem bicados) ou na terra recentemente revolvida e rica em minhocas. Nunca me passou pela cabeça que tivesse decidido estabelecer-se por cá.
Vamos aproveitar que não está ninguém em casa para uma espreitadela rápida?

Here it is! Isn´t it perfect?
I had been seeing a male blackbird around the vegetable garden in the last week or so, but I always thought he was interested in my strawberries (even if I never found a pecked one) or in the freshly moved soil, full of worms. I never thought we was thinking about living here.
There is no one home, shall we have a quick look inside?


O que é que temos aqui? 3 ovos... Pelo que andei a ler os melros põem normalmente 4 por isso ainda devem estar a pôr, e só depois começarão a incubar. A incubação dura cerca de 15 dias, por isso daqui a 2 semanas já vemos ter melrinhos. Mal posso esperar!

What have we here? 3 eggs... Someone has been busy! Blackbirds usually lay 4 eggs so, I think she is still laying and she should start incubating in the next few days. incubation takes about 15 days, so in two weeks we probably will have baby blackbirds. I'm so excited!

Assunto arrumado (espero) / Problem solved (I hope)

Depois de comentário da vanillalotus fiquei a saber que o que afectava a minha amoreira era ferrugem.Trata-se de uma infecção por um fungo (Gymnoconia nitens). Embora não mate a planta afecta bastante o seu desenvolvimento e a produção de frutos. Não tem cura e a planta afectada, se não destruida serve de reservatótio e foco de infecção para as outras plantas em volta. Assim sendo a decisão final foi a destruição de toda a planta afectada. Assim se tudo correr bem a outra amoreira não será afectada e ainda como amoras este ano.

The problem on my blacberries shrub was identified (thank you vanillalotus). Its orange rust, an infection by a fungus (Gymnoconia nitens). Although it doesn't kill the plant it makes it a lot weaker and the fruit production drops. Unless the infected plant is destroyed it will serve as an infection reservoir, infecting all the blackberries shrubs around. All that said, I had to destroy the plant. This way, hopefully, the other blakberries plant will not be contaminated and will produce some fruits this year.

Problemas?/Problems?

Esta é uma das amoreiras que plantei. Aparentemente está tudo bem com ela, começou agora a crescer depois do repouso invernal. Hoje de manhã quando andava a dar uma volta pela horta reparei que na parte de baixo das folhas apareceram umas manchas alaranjadas. Não sei o que são nem se são alguma coisa preocupante, só sei que estão lá. Alguém por ai neste grande cibermundo me pode dizer o raio é isto, e o que tenho de fazer para o eliminar?

I was checking things in my vegetable garden this morning when I noted something strange under the leaves of one of my blackberries bush. There are lots of little orange dots underneath the leaves. I'm not sure what they are, if they are anything at all. Should I get worried bout them? Should I do something about them? Should I let them be? Can any of you, garden bloggers, help me on this one?

O meu pomar / The orchard

Na horta/pomar os frutos começam (ou nalguns casos continuam) a crescer. As árvores, plantadas há dois passado vão dar frutos (se bem que poucos) pela primeira vez.

Fruit is starting to grow in my vegetable garden/orchard. The trees that I planted two years ago will produce their first fruits.

O damasqueiro deu algumas flores, mas durante as semanas de mau tempo, o q deve ter contribuido para apenas ter dois frutos.

The apricot tree blossomed during a period of heavy rains (it didn't rain the entire winter, and then when the blossoms where ready to open, there it came, loads of rain), and that's why (in my opinion) it only produced two fruits.


A ameixeira está neste momento cheia de flores e se tudo correr bem há de produzir algumas ameixas.

The plum tree is blossoming at the moment and, if everything turn up right, should produce a few plums


Pelo menos as abelhas parecem estar a tratar disso.

At least the bees seem to be doing their job.


O pessegueiro também está em flor, por isso devemos vir a ter pêssegos.

The peach tree is also blossoming, so I'm anticipating some juicy peaches.

Já com as pereiras, a história é diferente. Foram plantadas há 4-5 anos e nunca produziram nada. Nem flores nem frutos. Nada! (convém dizer que também nunca lhes liguei grande coisa, e só o facto de ainda estarem vivas já é bom)
Este, como foram alvo dos meus cuidados resolveram presentear-me com umas quantas flores. E digo flores e não frutos porque dali não deve sair nenhuma pêra. As pereiras não são autoférteis, o que quer dizer q precisam do polén de uma outra pereira para produzirem fruto. Ora estas duas realmente estão a florir, mas completamente desencontradas. Enquanto que uma já tem as flores abertas há dias a outra só agora está a produzir os botões florais. Mais um ano sem pêras....

The pear trees...well thats a different story. I planted them 4-5 years ago and ever since they haven't produced any flowers or fruits (I should confess that I also didn't bother to fertilize or water the poor things for all this time)
Since I started taking good care of them this year, they decided to offer me some flowers in return. And that's probably the only thing I will get from them since they are not blossoming at the same time (pear trees are not self fertile and so need another pear tree polen to produce some fruits). Oh well, another year with no pears....



Os morangueiros, esses continuam a produzir morangos sem parar. Só me arrependo de não ter plantado um maior numero de plantas. Para o ano quero ver se consigo duplicar a produção.

Strawberries keep on producing. My only regret is that I didn't plant a few more plants. Next year I want to, at least, double the number of plants.




Esta é uma groselheira que comprei para experimentar. Não tinha a certeza se se iriam adaptar ao nosso clima quente e seco por isso resolvi plantá-la sob uma amendoeira, de modo a ficar à sombra nas horas mais quentes do dia. O que é facto é que começou a produzir novos rebentos há coisa de 3 semanas e agora até já deu flor e está a produzir os primeiros frutos

The redcurrant was bought even without knowing if it would adapt our hot weather. I planted it under a almond tree where it will be in the shadow during the hottest period of the day. It started sending some new growth 3 weeks ago and now is blossoming and even producing its first fuits.

Serei um bigamo? /Am I a bigamist?

Já andava de olho nela há uns tempos... Lembro-me de a ter visto pela primeira vez o ano passado. Nunca mais me saiu da cabeça. Tinha de a ter! Comecei a andar de volta dela, a namorá-la.... a paixão foi crescendo, até que na semana passada me decidi e a trouxe para casa. É a minha nova paixão, a minha trituradora de ramos. Tendo em conta que ainda há tão pouco tempo vos falava da minha outra paixão, paixão essa que ainda mantenho, isso deve fazer de mim um bigamo!



I had my eye on her since long ago...I remember seeing her for the first time last year. I couldn't forget about her ever since. She had to be mine! So I started the courtship...and the passion went bigger and bigger, until last week when I finally decided myself and brought her home. Here she is, my new love, my new shredder. Considering that not long ago I told you about my other love, I guess this makes me a bigamist!









Chegados a casa fui logo pô-la a trabalhar. A "rapariga" tem um apetite insaciavel, e tudo o que eram ramos secos que andavam pelo jardim desapareceram num ápice. O resultado final? Um belo monte de madeira triturada.

I made her work as soon as we got home. She has quite an appetite! All the branches that were around were shredded in minutes. At the end I had quite an amount of shredded wood.






O destino de toda esta madeira triturada? O canteiro dos morangos claro! Esta cobertura vai ajudar a suprimir o crescimento de ervas daninhas, mas principalmente ajudar a manter a humidade do solo.

Where did all that shredded wood go? To the strawberries patch of course! Mulched like this the strawberries wont have to fight as many weeds and I wont have to water them as often.
