Um novo gato / A whole new cat

Já foi ao dentista, já não tem aquele horrivel canino espetado nem o arame que serviu para restaurar a fractura. Parece um novo gato ( e lindo acho eu).
Obrigado a todos quantos lhe desejaram as melhoras. O precesso respiratório está curado e ele já pode andar pelo jardim.

I took him to the dentist and he no longer has that crooked tooth. We also removed the 'wire' that was used to treat the fracture. He looks like a new cat (and a beautiful one I might add).
Thank you for the get well wishes. The respiratory problem is long gone now and he is allowed to go into the garden again.



Sai de casa todas as manhãs, volta todas as noites. Acho que tem um caso amoroso com o cobertor laranja...

He leaves every morning and comes back every evening. I think he has a love affair with the orange blanket.

Primeiras sementeiras/ First seedlings

Comecei as sementeiras deste ano há cerca de 2 semanas. Estes foram os primeiros a nascer, são melões de Almeirim. A caminho estão pepinos, pimentos, e melancias.

I started this year's seeds a couple of weeks ago. The melons (var. "Branco de Almeirim) were the first one to emerge. Tomatoes, cucumbers and watermelons .

E já vão 3 / And there goes 3

3 das miúdas já "botam" ovo. Na fotografia os ovos da Conchita e da Lola (o de cor creme), apanhadas no acto momentos antes. Se seguirem as passadas da MariCarmen vou passar a ter 3 ovos por dia (qualquer dia posso dedicar-me ao negócio da venda de ovos caseiros hehe)

3 of the girls are now laying. Pictured above are Conchita's second and Lola's first egg (the cream one). I just know they are theirs because I cought them in the act moments before. If they are like MariCarmen I will have 3 eggs a day (I'll go into the egg selling business hehehe)

Isso não é batota?/Isn't that cheating?

É extraordinário o numero de abelhas que este ano anda pela horta e pelo jardim. Não deverá haver problemas em polinizar todas as flores. Esta era a minha linha de pensamento ontem enquanto andava pela horta. Mas quando me pus a observar as abelhas que esvoaçavam em volta das flores das favas notei um comportamento no mínimo estranho.

Yesterday, as I walked around the vegetable garden, I was amazed with the amount of honey bees flying around the plants. Shouldn't be any pollinating problems this year, I was thinking. But, when I looked closer at the bees flying from broad bean flower to broad bean flower I noted a strange behavior.



Em vez de entrar na flor, como seria normal, as abelhas dirigem-se todas para a parte detrás da flor.

The bees weren't going into the flower, as expected. Instead they would go to the back of the flower, stay there for a while and fly away.



Observando mais de perto podemos ver que furam a base da flor, de onde sugam o néctar.

So, I decided to take a closer look. What did I see? The bees will make a hole in the base of the flower and then suck the nectar.



Desta forma conseguem o querem,mas sem contrapartida nenhuma para a planta.

This way they get what they came for with no advantage to the plant itself.



Isto parece-me uma grande batotice. Não?
Felizmente as favas autopolinizam-se e o facto de as abelhas derem desenvolvido este caminho alternativo não deverá afectar a produção de favas

If this isn't cheating, what is?
Luckily broad beens are self pollinating, meaning that they don't really need the bees, so I think the broad bean crop shouldn't be affected.

Apanhado! /Busted!

A coisa está a melhorar/ Looking better

Depois de uma manhã inteira de trabalho o jardim começa a ter melhor aspecto. As alfazemas foram podadas e as ervas quase todas arrancadas,

After spending a whole morning working on the garden things are looking a lot better. The lavenders were pruned and most of the weeds puled,



Ainda falta fazer algumas coisas, podar algumas plantas,

Still work to do, some plants still need pruning,



Mas no geral fiquei mais contente com o aspecto do jardim. Já não tem o aspecto horrivel e descuidado que tinha.

But overall I'm quite pleased with the final looks.



Agora é só esperar que tudo cresça novamente e se encha de flores.

In a few weeks things will have grown and will start blooming and the garden will look lovely again.



Quem lucrou com tudo isto? As galinhas, claro! Quase ficaram soterradas em erva fresca para se deliciarem à vontade.

And the major beneficiaries of all my work? The chickens, of course! They received an extra large amount of fresh grass and weeds to peck on.

Na horta / In the vegetable garden

A primavera chegou à horta. E com ela as flores nas árvores de fruto. Nos damasqueiros...

Spring has arrived to the vegetable garden. You can see it in all the blooms. In the apricot trees..




Nas ameixeiras...

Plum trees...



E nos pessegueiros.

And peaches.



As laranjeiras começam também a lançar novos rebentos.

The citrus are also starting to grow.



Começam a aparecer os primeiros morangos.

As are the first strawberries...



As primeiras favas...

The first broad beans...



As primeiras ervilhas...

And the first peas...





Enquanto os brócolos e os espinafres estão a chegar ao fim.

Meanwhile broccoli and spinach are coming to the end.



As couves galegas estão no seu melhor.

Kale is at its best.



Por todo o lado surgem novas plantas. As batatas que tinham sido destruídas pela geada

And lots of new plants are growing all around. Like the potatoes that were destroyed by frost..



Alhos..

Garlic...



Alho francês...

Leeks...



E tremoços. Estes serão cortados enterrados logo que cresçam um bocado mais.

And lupine. These still have to grow a bit before I use it as green manure.

Já não é o gato de jardim /Not a garden cat anymore

Este é o Jasmim, talvez o gato de que menos falo e menos fotografo. Isto porque sempre foi "o gato de jardim", nunca querendo entrar em casa e só aparecendo para comer. A semana passada apareceu doente e teve de ficar retido em casa para fazer o tratamento com antibióticos. Agora, que já respira bem e pode andar novamente pelo jardim, prefere vir dormir a casa todas as noites e deixou-se de "vadiagem". Logo que esteja totalmente recuperado vai à clinica para extraír aquele canino que lhe sai da boca (lembrança da fractura de mandibula há coisa de um ano e tal)

This is Jasmim. You might remember him from last year when he broke his lower jaw. I rarely photograph him or write about him, mainly because I rarely see him. He is "the garden cat", and he never wants to come in. Last week he was sick again and he had to stay inside to receive his antibiotic treatment. He is breathing alright again and can go into the garden once again. But strangely he prefers to stay in and wants to sleep inside every night. I'm just waiting for him to be in perfect health and then I will take him to the clinic where he will lose that horrible lower canine.

O jardim mais feio do mundo / The ugliest garden in the world

Se houvesse um concurso para o jardim mais feio do mundo o meu jardim teria grandes hipóteses de ganhar. Está positivamente horrivel.

If there was a contest for the ugliest garden in the world, mine would stand a good chance of winning. It looks absolutely awful.



A falta de tempo, associada a alguma preguiça minha e sobretudo a chuva que caiu nos ultimos tempos fizeram com que o jardim se tenha transformado num mato cheio de ervas, ramos secos e plantas a precisarem de ser podadas .

The rainy weather, plus my lack of time for gardening (and the fact that I'm a lazy gardener too I must admit) has turned the garden into a terrible weedy patch, full of ugly plant in desperate need of a good pruning.



Gramineas secas, e mais ervas...

Dry grasses, and lots of weeds...



Nem uma flor para alegrar a vista...

Not a flower in sight...



E nem nas zonas onde já andei a arrancar as ervas e a podar as plantas secas o aspecto é melhor. Teremos de esperar mais umas semanas para as plantas começarem a crescer e a florir.

And even the areas that I've already weeded and pruned look bad. I guess that it will take a few weeks before the garden looks good again.



A única zona com bom aspecto ainda é o canteiro das Chasmanthes.

The only exception is the Chasmanthe border.



Mas para o resto do jardim ainda há esperança. As Eufórbias estão a começar a florir.

But there is still some hope for the rest of the garden as the Euphorbia starts blooming,



As Fresias estão quase a abrir.

The Fresia are almost open.



E o Echium, o fabuloso Echium candicans está coberto de flores quase a abrir. Daqui a umas semanas o espectáculo vai começar!
