Colheita do dia/Today's harvest

Finalmente comecei a colher batatas doces. Assadas, quentinhas, devem ser uma maravilha.

I finally started to harvest my sweet potatoes. I'm thinking hot steaming baked potatoes...

Na horta / In the vegetable garden

Na horta é agora uma altura de alguma confusão. Por um lado é tempo de plantar as horticolas de inverno, por outro algumas das horticolas de verão ainda estão em plena produção.Os tomates e beringelas ainda crescem em grandes quantidades o que me faz adiar a data do arranque das plantas (além disso as galinhas adoram os tomates que quase todos os dias lhes dou),e ainda há uma ultima melancia a amadurecer.

Things are a bit confused in the veg garden. Not quite sure if it's spring,summer or autumn. I still have lots of tomatoes and aubergines waiting to be harvested, which make me delay the day I will pull the plants of the soil (besides, my chickens love the tomatoes I throw them almost every day), and one last watermelon ripening in the vines.



Os nabos e as beterrabas já cresceram o suficiente para poderem ser apanhados. Este ano semeei dois tipos de nabos, os bola de neve (que já tinha semeado o ano passado) e os "yellow jelly" (a partir de umas sementes oferecidas pelo Patrick)

Turnips and beets are ready to harvest. I sowed a different variety of turnips this year, "yellow jelly" which Patrick kindly sent me.





As couves têm crescido bastante e algumas já começam a formar cabeça. Plantei repolhos, couve galega, couve branca, bróculos e couves de bruxelas.

Brassicas are also growing big in the veg garden. I've sowed several different types, including savoy, brocolli, brussels, and kale.







Este ano tenho conseguido manter as lagartas sob controlo. Não só econtro os ovos com muita facilidade, destruindo-os em seguida, como já tenho o olho treinado para encontrar alguma lagarta que possa ter nascido e crescido sem eu me aperceber. Quem agradece são as galinhas que volta e meia lá comem lagartinhas frescas ao pequeno almoço.

I've been able to keep the cabbage caterpillar under control this year (until now at least). I've learned to look for the eggs and destroy them before hatching. I also keep an eye for any caterpillar that might have escaped my control and feed them to the chickens (they love these little treats)



Ainda muito pequenos estão os rábanos, os coentros e os espinafres. Mal posso esperar pelos rábanos...adoro rábano.

Cilantro, spinach and radishes are still growing. These are Portuguese "rábanos" a different variety of radish, with big and and long roots. Very tasty as a side dish.







As batatas doces estão com este aspecto. Não sei quando é que têm de ser colhidas, mas acho que deve ser em meados de Novembro. Espero bem que os tuberculos já tenham tamanho suficiente.

Sweet potatoes are almost ready to harvest, I think. I'm not quite sure when to harvest them but I think that next month is the right date.



Os fisalis continuam cheios de frutos verdes, não parecem ir amadurecer em breve. E eu que já tenho pelo menos duas receitas que quero experimentar com estes frutos.

Ground cherries are still growing in the shrubs. They are still green and I don't think they will ripen soon. I can't wait to try them in a few recipes I found recently.




Por ultimo, estas são as primeiras favas a nascer. Este ano semeei-as mais cedo que o ano passado. Espero que tenham mais sucesso. As do ano passado renderam-me apenas meia duzia de vagens.

And last, but not least my broad beans. I sowed them earlier this year and I'm hoping they will be more productive than last year's. I've only picked half a dozen pods last year.

Jardim de Outono / Autumn garden

Este mês nem dei pelos dias passarem, tanto que nem participei no GBBD deste mês. Vamos fazer de conta que ainda é dia 15 e que este é o post para o GBBD.

Time does fly, doesn't it? I didn't even realized I'd missed GBBD until today when I looked at the calender and realized we were on the 24th already. Well, lets consider this as a very, very late GBBD post.




O outono é, acho que já o disse aqui, uma das minhas estações preferidas. Sabe bem depois do calor insuportavel que faz durante o verão sentir estas temperaturas mais amenas (e confesso que também já sentia saudades do frio). Além disso no jardim as coisas começam outra vez a ganhar vida e há muitos motivos de interesse nos canteiros...pois...além dos dois cães, claro!

Autumn, along with spring, is one of my favorite times of year. It good to feel the temperatures drop after those scorching high temperatures we felt all summer long. Besides Things start growing again and there are lots of interesting things in the garden...yeah...apart from the two dogs of course.



Muitas plantas, como a Salvia leucantha, voltam a florir. Depois de terminada esta floração terei de a podar radicalmente, uma vez que já está a ficar de masiado grande e a abafar algumas das plantas menos competivas que estão por perto.

Salvia leucantha, one of my favorites, is blooming again. I forgot to prune in late summer so now its a bit too big and shadowing some of its neighbors. A hard pruning will be needed once it stops blooming.



Mas são as gramineas que durante esta altura mais atraem a atenção. É durante o Outono que florescem pondo em segundo plano muitas das plantas que as rodeiam.

Grasses are , probably, the queens of the autumn garden. Now its the time when they show of with their seed heads, stealing all the attention. I really wouldn't do without grasses.



Esta é provavelmente a combinação que mais gosto nesta altura do ano. Pennisetum rubrum, Sedum sp em tons avermelhados rodeados de plantas de cores mais frias como a Salvia officinalis tricolor, a Stachys byzantina e a Artemisia sp.

This is, probably, my favorite autumn combination. Pennisetum rubrum, Sedum sp. in its warm red shades surrounded by the cooler grays of Salvia officinalis tricolor, Stachys byzantina and Artemisia sp.



Esta é uma outra graminea (cujo nome não sei) que está à experiencia no meu jardim. É uma planta autoctone por isso bastante bem adaptada ao regime de "sequeiro" que eu imponho no jardim. Cresceu imenso e, na minha opinião, é bastante agradável à vista.

This is another grass I'm enjoying having in the garden. It's a native and I haven't been able to find its name yet. It has behaved very well during summer, coping with the low water regime,and it has grown a lot. Its seed heads should start turning reddish brown as winter approaches. I really think it looks good, don't you?



Não sou muito obcecado com podas e com o arranque das flores secas. Acho que o jardim quer-se assim com um ar mais natural. Isso permite-me apreciar algumas pequenas maravilhas como as cápsulas desta Phlomis que servem como ponto de interesse no jardim.

I'm not one of those gardeners obsessed about tidying up. I usually leave the dry seed heads in its place until I feel they are not needed in the garden. This allows me to have little beauties like these Phlomis seed heads to enjoy during autumn and winter.

A coraleira (Erythrina cristagalli)continua a florir. Não me canso de olhar para as flores, são realmente magnificas!

A variedade cor de laranja de Bulbine frutescens já começou a florir. A variedade amarela ainda está atrazada.

Desculpem ultimamente não ter respondido aos vossos comentários. O tempo não tem dado para isso. De todos os modos os vossos comentários são sempre muito bem vindos e eu vou tentar responder sempre que possivel.

I apologise for not answering to your comments in the last few posts. They are very welcome and I really enjoy reading them but time has been scarse. I will answer to them whenever possible.

As miudas /The girls

As miudas estão óptimas. Fartaram-se de crescer nestas duas semanas. Ainda continuam muito assustadiças, e tenho a sensação que isso não deve mudar. Mas já vem ter comigo quando apareço com guloseimas. (é incrivel a rapidez com que devoram um tomate). Por agora a preferencia vai para os tomates, seguidos de romãs e massa cozida, mas praticamente comem tudo o que lhes ponho à frente (a velocidade no entanto varia de acordo com a preferencia).

The girls are great and have grown a lot in the past two weeks. They are still a bit shy, and I have the feeling that isn't about to change. But they recognize me already and eat from my hand. They basically eat everything but their preference goes towards tomatoes, closely followed by pomegranates and cooked pasta.

Finalmente já as distingo umas das outras e já as comecei a baptizar. Esta é a minha favorita e chama-se MariCarmen (a miúda é andaluza!) e é a lider do bando. É a menos timida, a que aparece primeiro para comer e a que come da minha mão sem qualquer receio.

I can finally tell them apart and started to name them. This one is my favorite, her name is MariCarmen (she is Andalusian, she had to have a Spanish name!). She seems to be on top of the pecking order.She is not as shy as the others and she will eat from my hand without fear.

Esta outra começou por chamar-se Lola, mas neste momento deixou de ter nome porque cá me parece que não é uma, mas sim um rapaz. Ora isso levanta uma serie de problemas...Para começar o facto de um galo não ter qualquer utilidade (a não ser que se queira fazer criação e sinceramente não estou apara aí virado), depois o facto de grande parte dos galos se tornarem agressivos com a idade e para terminar o facto de tendo um galo é menos uma galinha que posso ter e logo menos esses ovos. Resumindo estou perante um dilema caso o raio do bicho venha a sair macho. Fico com ele? Ofereço-o a alguém? Faço cabidela?

This one was named Lola, but I think she is a he and not a she, so the name is still not sure. Actually nothing is sure in what regards this bird. The thing is...if it turns out to be a male what am I going to do with him? A male doesn't lay eggs, some males become aggressive, and it takes out the space that could be used by another egg laying female. So I'm really facing a dilemma...should I keep it, guive it away or eat it?

As outras duas chama-se Conchita (a franciscana mais escura) e Paquita (a outra preta). A Paquita é a mais timida de todas e não consigo que aproxime (esta manhã um prato com um resto de massa cozida foi atractivo suficiente, mas por pouco tempo). A Conchita é quase tão espevitada como a MariCarmen, mas ainda assim não deixa que lhe toque.

The other two are named Conchita (the speckled one) and Paquita (the black one). Paquita is the shyest one and she almost never approaches me (this morning she forgot about it when she saw a plate with some left over pasta, but soon remembered and ran away). Conchita is almost as tame as her sister MariCarmen but she still won't allow me to touch her.

Quem também está a adorar esta coisa das "pitas" é o Pascual, que passa as manhãs entretido a ver "TV galinha".

Some one else loves this "chook thing", Pascual that is. He spends his mornings watching "Chicken TV"

Coraleira / Cockspur Coral Tree

Com a chuva a coraleira voltou a florir (mas quantas vezes é que esta arvore floresce ao ano? Eu contei pelo menos 3). Desta vez com o tempo mais ameno as flores abriram e pudemos apreciá-las durante 2 semanas. Por enquanto a árvore ainda é muito pequena, mas quando for maior...deve fazer um vistão!

With all the rain the cockspur coral tree decided to bloom again (third time this year!). And this time the flowers weren't scorched by the sun and we were able to really enjoy them for the last 2 weeks. I'm gessing that wonce the tree grows it will be quite a sight once in full bloom.

Sim, ainda ando por cá. Ultimamente a preguiça tem levado a sua avante.

A juntar à preguiça, também aquela sensação de que não tenho nada para contar, nada interessante pelo menos.
