We are back in business

 Depois daquilo que foi, sem duvida, o pior ano desta horta/jardim volto finalmente a escrever no blog. A minhas desculpas aos seguidores habituais e os meus agradecimentos que todos os que me escreveram perguntando o que se passava e porque é que há tanto tempo não publicava nada. A verdade é que não em apetecia. Não me apetecia porque não tinha nada para dizer, nada para contar, nenhuma novidade a não ser a na horta quase nada crescia e quase tudo morria. O ano de seca e calor extremos foram os principais culpados, por mais que regasse, parecia nunca ser o suficiente e as plantas definhavam e morriam. Finalmente acabei por instalar um sistema de rega gota a gota mas já não fui a tempo de salvar grande parte das culturas. Este ano não houve feijão, favas, alfaces,pepinos, ervilhas, beterrabas, salvaram-se os tomates (e ainda assim muito, muito menos do que seria de esperar dado o numero de plantas que plantei este ano) mas mesmo esses foram atacados pelo oídio. Resta-me esperar que o ano que vem seja bem melhor.



 I'm back, after such a long time. This was undoubtedly the worst year ever in the history of this garden. Apart from a few tomatos (that are now dying of oidium) nothing else grew. The culprit was the weather, extreme drought and high temperatures made it dificult, if not impossible) to grow anything. I had to end up building a drip irrigation sistem if I wanted to save any crop. In the end only the tomatoes made it. I just hope things will get better and next year is the year when I get to see the vegetable garden growing as it should.

Morangueiros / Strawberries

É agora a altura de plantar morangueiros. Este Domingo fui ao mercado e vim de lá com dois molhos de morangueiros e dois vasos de framboesas. Todos os anos  planto novos morangueiros porque até agora nunca consegui que sobrevivam durante o Verão. Este ano tenciono mantê-los com uma camada de palha bastante espessa para ver se conseguem sobreviver ao calor e tempo seco.

Now is the right time  to plant strawberries so I went to the market this weekend and came home with two bunches of strawberry plants to plant out in the vegetable garden. Strawberries seem to die on my vegetable garden every summer, so every autumn I need to plant new ones. This year I plan to mulch them really well to see if  they can survive the dry hot summer weather.

 

Não consegui encontrar framboesas amarelas (que na minha opinião são mais saborosas que as vermelhas) por isso acabei por trazer duas vermelhas. Numa próxima oportunidade quero ver se consigo comprar duas amarelas para substituir as que tinha e que, inexplicavelmente, morreram o inverno passado.

I also bought two raspberry bushes to replace the ones I had (they died last winter for no good reason). Unfortunately I didn't find any yellow raspberries (they are tastier than the red ones in my opinion) so end up with two red ones. Maybe next time I'll manage to find yellow ones.



Depois de arrancadas as ervas  a terra foi enriquecida com  estrume e composto, plantaram-se os morangos e as framboesas, regou-se e cobriu-se tudo com palha. Agora é esperar que comecem a crescer e que na primavera nos dêem muitos e bons morangos.

The bed was cleaned of weeds and filled with manure and compost (we want them to have a good start). Then once the plants were on the ground I watered the and mulched heavily. Now, if all goes well,  I just need to wait and in a moth or two they should start to bloom.

Melhorar o solo / Mulch and fertilizer, two steps for a better soil

Desde que comecei a horta um dos meus maiores problemas tem sido o solo. Pesado e com pouca matéria orgânica é muito difícil de trabalhar, seca com facilidade no verão e não é tão fértil como eu gostaria. O adubos comerciais podem parecer uma boa solução para aumentar a fertilidade, mas na verdade pouco mais fazem do que promover o crescimento das plantas sem trazer nada de bom ao solo. Daí que este  ano, à semelhança do que já fiz no passado tenha decidido voltar a cobrir o solo com palha. A palha tem várias vantagens, protege o solo e os seus habitantes (que de bom grado degradam a matéria orgânica e a transformam em nutrientes facilmente assimiláveis pelas plantas), evita que a terra seque tão depressa  e como passar do tempo vai-se decompondo e servindo como fonte adicional de matéria orgânica. A matéria organica  melhora a qualidade do solo porque além de forner nutirntes melhora a textura do solo tornando-o mais arejado e solto (logo facilitando a penetração das raizes) e ajuda a conservar a humidade.

I've been reading "The Organic Way to Mulching" which, obviously,  made think about mulching. Mulching is important in the vegetable garden because it protects the soil and with time it helps improving it. Mulch keeps the tiny soil creatures protected from sun and desiccation, so that they are free to do their job. With time mulch (if organic) will decompose and be incorporated in the soil improving it. Mulch also helps to keep the soil moist and diminishes the need to water your garden. So I decided to mulch my vegetable garden with straw. The straw will decompose and turn into organic matter that will much improve the soil. Organic matter makes the soil looser, aerated facilitating  root growth.
 

Além da palha, este ano arranjei estrume de cavalo já compostado que adicionei a todas as camas. Embora já se note a diferença entre o solo das camas e o solo não trabalhado que as rodeia ainda lhe falta muita materia organica (apesar do composto e estrume). Outra experiencia que fiz este ano foi a de enterrar directamente numa das camas os restos da cozinha que deveriam ir para o compostor. Deste modo, acho eu, serãodirectamente compostados e integrados no solo. Essa cama só será plantada na primavera de modo a que o processo de compostagem se complete.

Added to the straw mulch I also mixed horse manure in every bed. The manure was already well composted so I could use it right away. This will increase the amount of organic matter in the soil, which is one of my main goals since the biggest problem of my soil is lack of organic matter. I aslo tried something new (as an experiment in one of the beds) which is to bury all the vegetable matter that would be tossed in the compost bin. This way it will decompose directly in the soil and be immediately incorporated. We shall see how it works.

As beterrabas são neste momento um dos meus legumes preferidos (o que é incrível se pensarmos que antes de as começar a cultivar as detestava). São dos poucos que são comestíveis na sua totalidade e tanto as folhas como a raiz são deliciosas. Se nunca comeram a rama das beterrabas experimentem, o sabor é muito semelhante ao dos espinafres e pode ser usado em sua substituição.
E se tal como eu acham que não gostam de beterraba experimentem cultivá-las na horta, e assá-las no forno com azeite e alho...deliciosas! Nada que ver com aquelas que se compram por aí...

Beets are at the moment one of my favorite vegetable, which is pretty amazing if you consider I hated them before I started growing them myself. I like its earthy flavor, its colors and most of all the fact that you can eat both roots and leafs. If you are one of those that throws beet leafs into the compost bin, next time think twice. Beet leafs are as tasty as spinach and can be used in every dish where you would normaly use them.

And if, like me , you think you don't like beets, give them a second chance. Grow a few in your vegetable garden and once they are ready roast them with olive oil and garlic...delicious!

A horta no Outono/ Autumn vegetable garden

Esta manhã com o arranque das últimos tomateiros acabaram definitivamente as culturas de verão. Embora a temperatura amena ainda as mantivesse vivas os tomates tardavam muito em amadurecer e acabavam roídos pelos caracóis (além disso tenho congelados tomates suficientes para cozinhar durante uns bons meses). Apesar de tudo ainda há muito que ver, e que colher na horta.

I pulled the last tomato plants this morning. The weather is not cold enough to kill them but the tomatoes were taking forever to ripe and the snails were eating them (plus I have a freezer full of tomatoes. They will be more than enough to cook until next season). Still there is plenty growing in the veg garden.




As couves lombardas estão finalmente a formar cabeça e a ficar boas para colher. Usamos uma na sopa e são bastante mais saborosas que as que se compram por aí.

Savoy cabbages are getting big enough for harvesting. We made soup out of one yesterday and they taste good, really good, much better then store bought ones. 




Também já comecei a apanhar os nabos apesar de pequenos. Estavam a ser atacados pelo pulgão e pelos caracóis e decidi que mais valem nabos pequenos que nabos nenhuns.

Turnips are still on the small side but I decided to harvest them too. Snails were starting to munch on them and aphids were attacking its leafs.



Os espinafres também já estão com tamanho para serem apanhados. Da horta seguem directamente para a cozinha ou para o congelador.

Lots of spinach is being harvested too. I've been cooking some and freezing the remaining ones.



Ainda temos algumas alfaces plantadas no final do verão. Na estufa já crescem novas plantinhas para as substituir.

These are some of the lettuces planted in late summer. They are ready to pick too, and I have plenty new plants growing in the greenhouse, almost ready to plant out.




As rutabagas estão enormes. São tão bons exemplares que estou a ponderar deixá-las para semente (já há mais a crescer na estufa, à espera do transplante)

Swedes are big and beautiful. in fact I'm thinking of keeping these for seed harvest just because they are so big. Plus I have sown another batch.



As couves de bruxelas já começam a despontar. Suponho que daqui a umas semanas já posso começar a apanhá-las.

Brussel sprouts are starting to grow. I expect to start harvesting them in a few weeks.



Esta é um  mistério, foi plantada como sendo uma couve Romanesco, mas não o é, tb não é um bróculo normal, suponho que seja um híbrido qualquer. De qualquer modo está pronta acolher e não deve passasr de amanhã.

And this, this is a mistery to me. It was suposed to be a Romanesco but it looks nothing like it, it also doesn't look like a regular broccoli, so I imagine it to be some hybrid. Either way it will be harvested and eaten pretty soon.







Os alhos, cebolas e alhos franceses também já foram plantados e crescem a bom ritmo. Também já semeados as favas, ervilhas e grão de bico preto continuam sem dar sinal de vida.

I also have garlic, onions and leeks growing on full speed. I've sown broad beans, peas and garbanzos but nothing has sprouted yet.

Ao encontro da semente / Seedy weekend

O tempo voa, já passou mais de uma semana e ainda não tive tempo de falar sobre o encontro promovido pela Colher para Semear. Infelizmente não fui grande repórter fotográfico, passei mais tempo a conversar do que a fotografar e acabei por trazer apenas uma fotografia utilizável.

As I told you in my last post  I went to a "Seedy weekend" (for lack of better translation) a week ago. This was a very interesting reunion of people interested in preserving heirloom vegetable and fruits. I wasn't much of a photographer that day, I spent more time talking to people than photographing and ended up with only one good picture.



O primeiro dia foi ocupado com apresentações de onde saliento uma sobre produção de vinho em regime biológico e, a melhor e mais importante para mim, a apresentação sobre o levantamento das variedades tradicionais algarvias.

On saturday we had a few lectures, some more interesting then others, the two more interesting ones being one on organic wine production and another one on traditional varieties of fruit and vegetables still found in the Algarve.

O segundo dia foi dia de oficinas e troca de sementes. Das oficinas salientou-se a oficina sobre colheita e conservação de sementes. E daí passei para a troca de sementes....ahhh a troca de sementes....por onde começar? Era incrível a quantidade de sementes para troca e , sendo eu um colecionador compulsivo de sementes, tive grande dificuldade em escolher o que trazer.
Acabei por vir com uma boa colecção de novas variedades, Tomate rosa (a unica variedade algarvia que consegui encontrar), Ervilha de olho preto de S. Miguel (uma variedade açoriana de grande produtividade e que tanto pode ser consumida fresca como seca),  Abóbora menina pequena, Couve galega de folha lisa, Chicharos, Feijão frade, Pastinacas, Abóbora Potimarron , Feijão Pinta leonesa (uma variedade espanhola), Abóbora Rouge vif d'etampes, Beringela rosada (acho q deve ser Rosa bianca), Feijão mungo preto, Rábano negro e Feijão francês rasteiro .

The second day was workshop and seed swap day. I atended a very interesting workshop on how to harvest and preserve seeds and then went into the seed swap. Ahhhh the seed swap....I felt like a little boy in a candy store...I didn't know which side to turn. There were so many interesting varieties that i had a very difficult time choosing which ones to bring home. I ended up bringing quite a colection of new vegetable seeds home. Tomate rosa (translated as pink tomato. the only algarvian variety I could find), Ervilha de olho preto de S. Miguel (a pea from the Azores),  Abóbora menina pequena ( a portuguese winter squash), Couve galega de folha lisa (portuguese kale), Chicharos (I can't translate this...they are a sort of square peas), Blackeyed peas, Parsnip, Potimarron winter squash , Pinta leonesa bean ( a spanish variety), Rouge vif d'etampes pumpkin ,  Rosa bianca aubergine, Black mung bean, Black spanish radish and a beautiful french bean .
