Plantações de Outono a todo o vapor / The autumn veg garden full steam ahead

Na horta ainda há muita coisa para colher antes que chegue o tempo frio, mas já estou a aproveitar os dias mais frescos que têm feito ultimamente para plantar algumas das hortícolas que irão crescer durante o tempo frio.

Even if there is still lots growing in the veg garden I'm already starting to plant the vegetables that I will harvest during the Fall/Winter season. The temperature has been considerably lower so I'm taking advantage of these cooler days to plant out all the seedlings I started growing a few weeks ago.



Estes repolhos foram já plantados há cerca de duas semanas (impressionante o salto que deram desde que os passei para a terra!) Ontem plantei alfaces nos intervalos entre eles. A ideia é que as alfaces crescem mais depressa que os repolhos e estarão prontas para apanhar antes que comecem a ficar demasiado apertados. Desta forma não se desperdiça espaço e dificulta-se o crescimento das daninhas (que dia-se de passagem já começam a aparecer)

I planted these "Milano cabbages about two weeks ago (amazing how fast they are growing), and yesterday I planted lettuces in between them. They will grow faster than the cabbages, so by the time the cabbages are need more space they will be harvested. This way I'm using every inch possible and making it a bit more difficult for the weeds to grow (or at least I hope)



Aqui o mesmo sistema mas com couve "Romanesco". Quando as couves estiverem grandes já as alfaces terão sido colhidas.

Here some Romanesco cabbages also with lettuces.



Esta manhã entretive-me a plantar nabos. Esta variedade chama-se "Nabo 60 dias" o que quer dizer q levam cerca de 8 semanas a ficarem prontos. Nessa altura serão substituídos por favas .

Turnips, planted out this morning. These are "60 days turnips" meaning they will be ready for harvest in 8 weeks. I' will then replace them with broad beans.



Couves de Bruxelas e Romanesco. Aqui ainda não plantei alfaces porque prefiro plantar as alfaces ao entardecer. Normalmente quando transplantadas de manhã não aguentam o sol do dia (a não ser em dias frescos ou chuvosos)

I also planted some Brussel sprouts and more Romanesco cabbage. No lettuces in between because I like to plant lettuces in the evening. If planted in the morning most of the times they will not survive the strong sun and high temperature during the day (unless in cloudy or rainy days)

Alho francês. Aqui o espaço entre plantas não permite plantar nada mais....a não ser talvez uns rabanetes...

Leeks. The space between the plants is not big enough to plant anything else....maybe a few radishes...





Rutabagas intercaladas com mangericão. O ano passado experimentei plantar mangericão nesta altura e tive bastante sucesso, por isso esta ano repeti. As rutabagas são uma novidade.

An finally swedes and basil. This seems to be a bit late for basil, but last year I also sowed it in August and managed to have a second harvest of it.I'm planting swedes for the first time this year.

Plantações de Outono / Starting the Autumn veg garden

Esta é a época em que temos de começar a planear a horta para o Outono/Inverno. Desde o inicio do mês que comecei as sementeiras. A crescer neste momento tenho alfaces, alho francês, cebola branca, couve tronchuda, nabos, couve de Bruxelas e beterrabas.

This is the time when we need to start planning our Autumn/Winter vegetable garden. And so I am. I've started sowing 2 weeks ago and now have lots of small plants almost ready to be planted out. In the picture we can see, lettuce, beets, portuguese cabbage, brussel sprouts, turnips, leeks and onions

Moças trabalhadoras / Working girls

Este ano está a se excecionalmente bom em matéria de produção de ovos. As miúdas andam aplicadíssimas e não passa um dia sem que pelo menos recolha um ovo. Não sei se será por terem um rapaz a quem impressionar, mas o que é certo é que mesmo as Sureñas que em outros anos deixavam de por em Agosto reiniciaram a postura depois de um breve intervalo.

The girls are working hard this year. Not one day goes by without an egg in the nest box. Maybe they are trying to impress the new rooster, but what I can tell you is that in previous years they would stop laying around the beguining of August and this year, after a breaf interval they started laying again.



As duas que estiveram a chocar (com fracos resultados diga-se....apenas um pinto que morreu pouco depois de nascer), ao contrario do que eu esperava, reiniciaram as postura e são as mais assíduas visitantes dos ninhos.

Even the two girls that got broody and spent 23 days sitting on eggs have now restarted laying and are the two most productive of the bunch.



Não tenho a certeza se as duas frangas já iniciaram a postura embora estejam as duas com uma crista enorme e bem vermelha (sinal de que ou estão a pôr ou quase a pôr) Aparecem alguns ovos castanhos e pequenos, por isso alguma delas deve estar a pôr, mas ainda não vi nenhuma nos ninhos.

The two yongest have devoloped a nice big red crest meaning that they are laying or about to lay, and since I've been finding a few smaler eggs I'm guessing they have started working on egg production too.



Estou muito satisfeito com as novas galinhas, são muito mais calmas que as mais velhas e não entram em panico cada vez que entro no galinheiro. O galo então é tão calmo e manso que quase me deixa tocar-lhe. O único aspeto negativo é que os ovos são mais pequenos que os das Sureñas, mas as galinhas também têm um porte bastante menor.

I'm really happy with the new chickens, they are much calmer then the old girls and don´t run around like crazy when I get inside the pen. Zebedeu, the rooster, is extremely tame and almost (yes, almost) alows me to stroke his head. On the down side the eggs are smaller then the ones the older girls lay, but they are a smaller breed too.

Quem disse que as ervilhas não são cultura de Verão?/ Who said peas wont grow in hot summer weather?

As ervilhas são tradiconalmente uma cultura de tempo frio. Segundo o que tenho lido "não toleram o tempo quente". Não foi o que aconteceu este ano na horta. Nasceram-me algumas "Capucijner" que, ao contrario do que esperava, cresceram, floriram e deram vagens. Não cresceram tanto quanto costumam (ficaram-se por uns modestos 20-30 cm, quando normalmente passam de 1 metro) nem deram tantas vagens como seria de esperar mas não deixa de ser curioso ver ervilhas a crescer em pleno Agosto.

Peas are traditionaly a cold weather culture. Gardening books even say "peas won't stand high temperatures". So when I first saw these "Capucijner" sprouting I wondered if they would grow to see the next day. They did. Not only that but they also bloomed and are growing a few purple pods. They are not quite as tall as they should be (just about 20cm, when they should be more than 1 meter) nor quite as productive but is funny to see them growing during our hot August days.

Uma coisa que todos os anos me surpreende nos melões é a capacidade de aparecerem de um dia para o outro. Um dia não está lá nada, por mais que se procure, e no dia seguinte, ao arrancar uma erva, lá está ele já crescidinho.

One thing that is always surprising when growing melons is their ability to grow fruits overnight. One day there were none (well, you've spent half hour looking for them and you didn't find them, so they couldn't be there) and the next day, while weeding, you find half a dozen of them.

Foi assim esta manhã, sem querer encontrei uma serie deles. Ontem não estava lá nada, posso garantir. Fartei-me de procurar!

That was exactly what happened this morning.



Com as melancias passa-se mais ou menos o mesmo, mas estas são ainda mais manhosas. Chegam a criar pequenos frutos, que dias depois abortam, só para nos distrair. Enquanto isso, escondidas pelas folhas crescem os outros frutos, os que nos vão surpreender quando os encontrarmos por acaso ao arrancar as ervas.

Watermelons are even sneakier. They will do everything to confuse you. The female flowers are very difficult to find and most of the time when you find them they are growing tiny fruits that will invariably die in a few days (leaving you heartbroken). Meanwhile underneath the leafs they will grow one or more fruits so they can surprise you one morning with an almost mature size fruit.

Oidío / Oidium

Hoje foi dia de aplicar calda bordalesa. Apliquei apenas no melão "Pele de sapo" porque é o único a mostrar sinais de oídio. O motivo é, imagino, o excesso de rega. Não foi uma ideia brilhante plantar os melões junto com alfaces. As alfaces precisam de muito mais água e o resultado está à vista

For the record, it's not a good idea to plant lettuces and melons together. Lettuce needs a all lot more water than melon and with time and the right temperature oidium is bound to happen. At least that was the case with my "Toad skin melons".



Apanhei as alfaces, reduzi as regas e notaram-se melhorias , mas não suficientes e hoje acabei por não esperar mais e sulfatei as plantas. Espero que o tratamento tenha sido feito a tempo e que os frutos que neste momento já crescem não se venham a perder.

I got rid of the lettuces ( as in picked them and ate them in a salad) and diminished the amount of watering but I was too late. The plants improved, but not enough, so today I had to use Bordeaux mixture to treat them. After all I don't want to loose the melons that are already growing on the vines.





Todos os outros melões, plantados com o feijão de trepar e com regas bastante mais reduzidas estão saudáveis e sem sinal de oídio. Optei por não os sulfatar, embora tenha ficado a pensar que se calhar não teria sido má ideia um tratamento a titulo preventivo.

All the other melons, growing with pole beans and receiving much less water look fine and healthy so I didn't treat them. Maybe I should have, as profilaxis? We will see...

Promessas/ Promises

Melão "Pele de sapo"/ "Pele de Sapo" (Toad skin) melon

As curcubitaceas estão finalmente a começar a produzir frutos. Com sorte consigo comer melão e melancia antes do Inverno. Já se vêem frutos a crescer no melão "Pele de sapo", melão "Opal Kugel", melão "D'Algers", melancia "Verde escura" e abóbora "Butternut"

Curcubits are starting to set fruit. We can see tiny fruits on "Toad skin" melon, "Opal Kugel" melon, "D'Algers" melon, "Dark green" watermelon and "Butternut" squash.

Nunca sei ao certo quanto tempo levam a amadurecer, mas penso que é cerca de 80-90 dias, o que significa que devem estar maduros só lá para o final de Setembro. Felizmente o Verão aqui dura até meio de Outubro, caso contrário esta sementeira tão tardia seria em vão.

Will they ripe in time? I'm never sure of how long do they take to ripe, but I'm thinking it should be aroud 80-90 days, meaning they wont be ripe before October. Good thing we have long summers , otherwhise this would be a lost crop

Camaleão comum (Chamaeleo chamaeleon)

Encontrei-o hoje enquanto cortava alguns ramos do damasqueiro. Sabia que existiam por aqui, mas nunca tinha visto nenhum. É um animal impressionante. Pena que seja uma especie ameaçada.

Found him today on the apricot tree. I knew we could find chameleons around here but had never actually seen any. They are such wonderful creatures. Its a pitty they are endangered.

Amizades recentes/ On recent friendships

Durante meses nem se podiam ver (bem, na realidade era ele que não a podia ver a ela, fugindo a 7 pés,bufando e rosnando). Agora passam as manhãs na horta nisto...

He hated her for months. Whenever she arrived he would growl, hiss and run away. For the past few month things have changed and this is how they spend their mornings in the vegetable garden...

Uma rica pera! / Pears again!

Na realidade não é uma mas sim oito. Oito belas peras a crescer na pereira. Este foi sem dúvida um bom ano para as árvores de fruto. Tive uma bela colheita de nectarinas e ameixas e até a pereira está com frutos (pela segunda vez em 6 anos). Parece que o truque com as pereiras é ameaçá-las. Sempre que me decidi a arrancá-las porque só me estão a ocupar espaço elas decidem dar fruto. E ganham mais um ano de vida....

Once again (for the second time in 6 years) we have pears growing on the pear tree. You know it was a good year for fruit trees when my pear tree is bearing fruit. I guess the trick with pear trees is to threaten them. Every time I decide to pull them out because they are just a waste of space they decide to grow some fruit...and get to live another year...

Noticias do galinheiro / News from the hen house

Este foi um ano muito bom e muito mau para as miúdas. Por um lado construí um galinheiro bastante maior que o antigo passando as galinhas a dispor de perto de 40m2 para passear (em vez dos 12m2 de que dispunham anteriormente), mas por outro lado perdemos uma das miúdas. A Lola, bastante aventureira mas pouco esperta resolveu evadir-se e passear na horta. Isto aconteceu quando não havia ninguém por perto, e a pobre acabou por cair na boca dos cães.

Good things and bad things happened in the hen house this past few months. The pen was rebuilt and enlarged, meaning that the girls have 3 times more space then they used to have to walk around, but on the other end we lost one of the girls, Lola decides to escape from the pen and ended up neing caught by the dogs.



Para compensar a perda de uma das miúdas acabei por comprar mais 3, que trouxeram a reboque um garboso rapaz. Assim agora, além das 3 "Sureñas" originais temos um casal de "Preta lusitanica" e duas "Pedrês", ambas raças nacionais e ameaçadas.

So, to make up for Lola's death we decided to buy a few more girls. Only this time a boy came with them. This time I managed to find portuguese breeds, "Preta Lusitanica" and "Pedrês".





Vamos então às apresentações, as Pretas Lusitanicas são o Zebedeu e a Zulmira, e as Pedrêses a Floripes e a Florinda. São raças mais pequenas que a Sureña e isso nota-se bem no tamanho dos ovos, mas por outro lado são muito mais calmas e menos medrosas.
O plano é tentar criar "Preta Lusitanica", embora este ano a coisa não tenha corrido bem. De 12 ovos apenas um chocou mas o pinto morreu em poucas horas. Esperemos que a coisa corra melhor para o ano que vem.

Também pela primeira vez tive animais doentes. Duas das galinhas desenvolveram pneumonia e tive de as trazer para dentro de casa para as poder medicar (sim, porque apanhar uma galinha duas vezes por dia para lhe enfiar antibiótico bico abaixo, é tarefa quase impossível se ela estiver solta no galinheiro). Felizmente correu tudo pelo melhor e ao fim de uma semana de antibiótico puderam regressar ao conforto do galinheiro.

So, lets meet the new guys, shall we? The first ones are Zebedeu and Zulmira, a couple of "Preta Lusitanica" and the other two girls are Floripes and Florinda two young females of "Pedrês". Both are rare and endangered breeds and I have plans start breeding "Preta lusitanica". The first attempt didn't go too well, as only one egg hatched and the chick died within a few hours. Next time it will be better, I hope.

Um passeio pela horta / A walk around the veg garden

A horta está atrasadíssima, mais uma vez comecei as sementeiras muito tarde, no inicio de Junho, o que quer dizer que levo uns bons dois meses de atraso. Vamos então ver o que está a crescer na horta.

Once again I started my sowings very late, around June, meaning that every thing is about two months late in its development. Shall we go for a walk? I'll show you whats growing in my vegetable garden this year.





Tomates. Estes são da variedade "Maravilha dos mercados" (conseguidos através da "Colher para Semear")e são os que vão mais adiantados, já começam a dar fruto. Além destes tenho "Joia de Oxaca", "Orange Queen" e "Cherokee purple" (oferta do amigo António do A Horta d'avó)

We will start with the tomatoes. The ones on the pictures are "Maravilha dos Mercados" a portuguese heirloom. Also growing we have "Oxacan Jewel", "Orange Queen" and "Cherokee Purple"



Soja. É a segunda vez que semeio soja, embora desta vez tenha semeado um pouco mais tarde espero obter bons resultados. O terreno este ano foi enriquecido com composto (ao contrario do ano passado em que as plantas cresceram muito pouco), pelo que espero obter melhores resultados que no ano passado.

Soy beans. I realy can remember the name of this cultivar but I'm trying it for the second time. Last year it received too little water and no compost on the soil but it still grew. This year hopefully things will go better since I've added a good amount of compost to the soil and am being very carefull with the watering.





Feijão. São cinco as variedades de feijão que tenho a crescer na horta, "Papo de rola", "Feijão riscado", "Feijão branco de trepar", "Royalty purple" e "Dog Bean".

Beans. I have five diferent types of beans growing "Papo de rola", "Feijão riscado", "Feijão branco de trepar", "Royalty purple" e "Dog Bean" (the first three are Portuguese heirlooms)





Abóbora. Estas são, mais uma vez da variedade "Butternut", que sempre me tem dado muito bons resultados. Infelizmente também estão um pouco atrasadas e só agora começam a formar botões.

Winter squash. Once again "Butternut" , one of my favorites. They are only now starting to bloom, I hope they will have time to ripe.



Pimentos. Com estes confesso que fiz batota e comprei as plantas já crescidinhas. Nunca me dei muito bem com a sementeira de pimentos e este ano resolvi jogar pelo seguro.

Peppers. Ok, I'll admit, I cheated with these ones...I bought already grown plants. I was never too lucky with sowing peppers so this year I just didn't bother.



Melancia. Destas há duas variedades, a "Verde escura" ("Colher para Semear") e a "Orangeglo". Esta ultima parece ser de crescimento muito lento e está muito mais atrasada que a "Verde escura" Só espero que tenha tempo de frutificar e amadurecer, estou com mta curiosidade em experimentá-la.

Watermelon. 2 types, "Verde escura", a Portuguese heirloom, and "Orangeglo" This last one is really a slow grower, so I'm fearing I might not taste them this year.



Acelgas. A planta que se vê na foto já tem pelo menos 2 anos e continua a crescer. Este ano semeei mais umas para lhe fazerem companhia.

Swiss chard. I have one swiss chard plant that keeps on growing for the past 2 years and I sowed a few more.



Melões. Na fotografia vê-se a variedade "Meloa Amarela", mas também tenho semeados "Melão banana", "Melão D'Algers", "Old Time Tennessee", "Luneville" "Ha Hogen" "Opal Kugel" e "Gurbek".

Também tenho semeadas á espera de serem transplantadas, alfaces, beterrabas, couves, e espinafres.

Melons. In the picture you can see "Meloa Amarela" another Portuguese heirloom, but I'm also growing "Banana Melon", "Melão D'Algers", "Old Time Tennessee", "Luneville" "Ha Hogen" "Opal Kugel" e "Gurbek".
