A crescer... /Growing...

Ainda cheias de flores, as ervilheiras já têm muitas vagens a crescer. Vai ser o primeiro ano em que as vou experimentar, as "capucijner" (uma variedade holandesa). Tradicionalmente são usadas secas, mas acho que as vou experimentar em fresco.

The pea vines are still covered with blooms.The pods, in good number are growing and swallowing. This will be the first time I will taste the capucijner peas. Though they are traditional used as dry peas I'll try them as fresh peas.

Apresento-vos a mais recente artista do jardim com gatos. A Serafina! Apareceu-me há coisa de uma semana, cheia de fome. Não tive coragem de lhe voltar as costas e lá a trouxe para casa. Bem recebida pelos cães (a Maria Antonia já é a melhor amiga e protectora), está a ter mais problemas com os gatos. O Zé tolera-a mas não lhe dá muita confiança, o Pascual foge dela como o diabo da cruz (é de rir ver um gato tão grande a bufar, rosnar e fugir com medo de uma coisa tão pequena)

Meet Serafina, the latest crew member here at jardim com gatos. She followed me to my car about a week ago and I just couldn't say no to these beautiful eyes. She was readily accepted by the dogs (she's best friends with Maria Antonia that plays with her and defends her from the others) but the cats weren't too happy with the newcomer.

As primeiras favas / Picking the first broad beans

Comi este fim de semana as primeiras favas. São bastante mais pequenas que as da variedade "do Algarve" que semeei para colher na primavera, mas ainda assim bastante saborosas. Compensou tê-las semeado em Agosto. Vou ter favas todo o inverno.

This weekend I picked and hate the first broad beans of the season. This variety has smaller pods and smaller broad beans but very tasty nonetheless. I'm glad I sowed them this year, it means I will be eating fresh broad beans all winter long.

Visitas / Visitors

Tivemos hoje no jardim dos gatos uma visita fora do comum. Para quem não saiba o que é, trata-se de um grifo ou abutre-fouveiro.

We had a very uncommon visitor today. A juvenile Griffon vulture.



Estava pousado no telhado de manhã cedo e lá ficou, indiferente ao ladrar dos cães, durante umas duas horas, até que se cansou de os ouvir e levantou voo.

I guess he spent the night on top of my roof, since he was already there when we came out at 6.30am. And there he stayed for at least two more hours. He didn't seem at all disturbed by my presence or by the dogs that were barking frantically.



É provavelmente a minha ave de rapina favorita e, embora soubesse que podem surgir por estas paragens, nunca tinha visto nenhum. Devem imaginar a sensação que foi sair de casa e dar de caras com ele.

This is probably my favorite bird of prey, but I had never seen a wild one. You can only imagine what I felt when I found him this morning. It's such a magnificent creature!



Não tenho a certeza mas acho que se deve tratar de um juvenil qua andava perdido e parou para descansar. Mesmo juvenil não deixa de ser um animal magnifico.

I'm not sure, but it looks like a juvenile, and I can only guess he was lost and tired so he decided to rest a bit on top of my roof.

À terceira é de vez / Third time is the charm

Desde há 3 anos que todos os anos experimento semear cenouras. Sempre sem sucesso. Nem sequer germinam. Este ano resolvi experimentar uma ultima vez. Usei a tecnica da serapilheira que vi num outro blog. Consiste em semear e cobrir com serapilheira de forma a manter a humidade e evitar o crescimento das daninhas. O resultado não foi fantastico mas ainda assim bastante melhor que nos outros anos. A taxa de germinação foi relativamente baixa mas ainda assim tenho cenouras a crescer.

Ever since I first started my vegetable garden, 3 years ago, I've tried to grow carrots. Always without success . I just couldn't understand why, but I wasn't going to give up on them. This year I tried once again. I used the burlap technique Which I red about in another blog. You just sow the seeds and cover them with burlap. This will help to keep the moisture and prevent weed growth.
The result, though far from great, was a lot better then before, and we have carrots growing in the veg garden.




Encorajado pelo relativo sucesso resolvi experimentar uma outra coisa. Lembrei-mer q tinha uma velha banheira na horta ainda à espera de destino e resolvi enchê-la de composto. Semeei cebolas, cenouras e rabanetes. As cebolas e os rabanetes já estão com um tamanho jeitoso e agora, finalmente começam a germinar as cenouras. Comparando com as que semeei anteriormente a taxa de germinação é muito melhor.

So, since I was finally having some degree of success with carrots I decided to try something diferent. I Remembered I had an old bath tub just laying around waiting to be used and turned it into a raised bed. I filled it with compost and sowed carrots, onions and radishes. Carrots and radishes were fast to germinate and grow, but the carrots are only starting to sprout. The germination rate is a lot higher then with the ones I sowed directly on the ground.




Não consigo explicar a diferença entre a taxa de germinação nos dois locais, mas cá me parece que vou passar a semear as cenouras sempre na banheira.

I can't realy explain the differences in germination rates, but one thing I'm sure...I'll keep on sowing carrots in the bath tub.

E ainda as favas.../ Broad beans again...

Semeei as favas "do Algarve" esta manhã. Com as chuvas que se avizinham devem germinar num instante. Entretanto fui passar revista às "Luz de Outono" à procura de pulgões e encontrei isto numa das folhas. Eu acho que é um "casulo" (não sei se casulo será o nome certo) de joaninha, mas não tenho a certeza. Alguém por aí faz ideia do que seja?

Just sowed some more broad beans this morning (this time I used a local variety "do Algarve", this will take longer to produce pods and should be ready to harvest around March/April). Meanwhile I checked the "Luz de Outono" for blackfly and didn't find any. What I did find was this cocoon in one of the leafs: I'm guessing its a ladybird cocoon. Can anyone confirm it?
