Dois meses depois de semeadas começo a colher as primeiras alfaces. Os rabanetes esses foram semeados há pouco mais de duas semanas.
As "Folha de carvalho" apesar de pequenas começam a espigar...o que me faz pensar que não aguentam bem o calor (e que têm de ser comidas depressa). Não as vou semear mais sem que as temperaturas baixem mais um pouco.

It took them almost 8 weeks but the first lettuces are ready to pick. These "oak leaf" lettuces are even starting to bolt, making me think that they are more a winter lettuce. I won't seed them again until temperatures drop a bit.

Romãs e batatas

Hoje resolvi-me e colhi algumas batatas das batateiras que nasceram de foma expontanea no canteiro das favas. As batatas são pequenas e não são muitas, mas tendo em conta q este ano não plantei batatas...valeu a pena tê~las deixado crescer.

I harvested a few small potatoes today. These were voluntiers in my garden this year...good thing I didn't pull them out when they started to grow.

Apanhei-te! /Got you!

Estão a ser um grande problema na horta este ano. Não sei se se deve ao facto de o terreno ter estado sem ser cultivado durante todo o Verão, mas os canteiros estão cheios destas lagartas (as famosas "lagartas subterrâneas"). Todos os dias apanho 2 ou 3, não sem que antes tenham causado algum estrago. Quem fica a ganhar são as galinhas que lhes chamam um figo!

Cut worms are realy a big problem in the veg garden, this year. I've been catching 2 or 3 every day ( never before they cause some damage). Pity I can't set the chickens loose in the garden, they love them!

Com cada vez mais coisas a crescer, este era o aspecto da horta esta manhã...

Nada mal, se considerarmos que ainda há pouco mais de um mês, tinha este aspecto...

Not bad if we consider that a month ago it looked like this...

Sementeiras/ Seedlings

As alfaces plantadas o mês passado têm crescido bem. Hoje foi dia de plantar novas alfaces, 4 variedades que nunca tinha semeado antes ("Bionda Foglia Liscia", "Salad Bowl", "Bionda del Ortolani"e "Verte Maraîchère"). Vamos ver se crescem tão bem e são tão boas como as dos anos passados.

Lettuces are growing at a good rateand today was the day to plant a few more. These are all new varieties to me ("Bionda Foglia Liscia", "Salad Bowl", "Bionda del Ortolani"and "Verte Maraîchère") , so I'm really excited to see how will they do and how tasty they are.



Ainda à espera de serem plantadas temos couves, couves-flor, alho francês, espinafres, nabos e mais ervilhas. Para não variar volto a fazer as sementeiras em módulos para depois as transplantar para a horta. É muito raro que a sementeira directa me dê bons resultados por isso cada vez mais este será o método a seguir.

I still have lots of seedlings wayting their turn. Cabbages, cauliflowers, turnips, leeks, spinach and more peas are still growing in modules until they are big enough to be planted out. Direct sowing simply doesn't give me good results, so apart from broad beans which work well when directly sowed I'm sowing everything else in modules.

Dentro da jaula / Inside the cage

Esta é a minha nova jaula para couves. Esta é maior e mais alta e destina-se a couves altas como as couves de Bruxelas e os broculos.

This is my other brassica cage. Its taller and wider because it's meant for taller brassicas like Bruxels sprouts and broccoli.



No interior, resguardadas de (quase) tudo, crescem os broculos e as couves de bruxelas. As couves galegas ainda estão muito atrasadas. Como podem ver têm, tal como as alfaces, estao protegidas com um rolo de cartão. As lagartas "subterraneas" (siceramente não sei que outro nome lhes dar) têm sido o maior problema da horta este ano. Vivem enterradas e cortam as plantas pela base. Planta que não seja protegida acaba devorada.

Inside the little plants are growing very fast. Note the toilet roll protecting them. Cutworm is really a problem this year and if I don't protect them the little seedling will be destroyed.



As outras couves estão a crecer bem na outra gaiola. Aqui não tive problemas com a lagarta "subterranea". Curioso como parece afectar apenas alguns canteiros.

Kale is also growing fast inside the other cage. Cutworm seems to leave them alone. Funny how only some beds are afflicted by it.

Corrida contra o tempo/ Running against time

Os poucos feijoeiros que cresceram estão agora a florir e com as primeiras vagens a crescer. Irão ter tempo para amadurecer, ou vou ficar sem sementes para o ano que vem?

The few bean stalks that are growing in the veg garden have started blooming and we can already see the first pods. I'm afraid the cold weather will arrive before they are ready to pick. Or not? We'll see...





Ao mesmo tempo o grão começa agora a desenvolver as flores. No caso destes parece-me impossível que consigam desenvolver a tempo de podermos colher sementes.

Same thing with the garbanzo beans. These take longer to devolope, and they are only starting to show the first flower buds, so I think that these were a waist of seeds. Or maybe not...legumes are great to fix nitrogen in the soil.
