Aí vêem elas! Here they come!

As favas que semeei há duas semanas começam agora a nascer. É a primeira vez a semeeio favas tão cedo, mas esta é uma variedade precoce ("Luz do outono") que deve ser semeada em Agosto para ser colhida em Novembro/Dezembro. Vamos ver como corre a coisa.

Broad beans are sprouting. Looks a bit early to sow them, but these are a eraly variety ("Luz de outono") and they should be sowed in August to harvest in November/December. We will see how it goes.

Quem é que me anda a comer as alfaces? /Something is eating my lettuces!

Qualquer coisa anda a comer-me as alfaces. Na fotografia não se vê muito bem mas esta pequena alface está cortada pela base. Tem sido uma constante de há uns dias para cá, todas as manhãs uma ou duas estão neste estado. Andei a investigar e parece-me ser obra de larvas de borboleta nocturna (Amathes c-nigrum ou similar) a que os ingleses chamam cutworm. As larvas vivem debaixo do solo e alimentam-se desta maneira, roendo os caules das plantas. Neste momemto já me destruíram duas filas de alfaces. Em teoria consegue-se evitar o seu ataque colocando uma barreira física em redor do caule e raiz das plantas, um anel de metal, papel ou cartão costumam ser eficazes.

I think I might have cutworms growing in my lettuce patch. Every morning one or two of them is cut by its base . I've been reading about it and it seems like the way to stop them is to put metal or paper collar around the base of the plant.



Ainda bem que costumo guardar os cilindros de cartão que vêem no interior dos rolos de papel higiénico e papel de cozinha. Em vez dos habituais vasos para semear utilizei-os para proteger as plantas e agora todas as alfaces têm un anel de cartão a protegê-las. Espero que funcione ou, por este andar, fico sem alfaces.

I always keep my paper rolls, so I had plenty to use for this. All my lettuces have now a paper roll around its base. I hope this works or, by the looks of it I will loose all my lettuces.

Recomeçar /Starting again

O calor do verão começa a abrandar e já apetece outra vez trabalhar a horta. Depois de meses em que nada cresceu é tempo de começar a semear e a plantar novamente.

Looks like the temperature is dropping making it bearable to work in the vegetable garden again. So, after doing nothing for a few months I started planting again.



Desde meados de Agosto que tenho andado a semear e neste momento crescem na horta alfaces,

So, since mid August I started sowing things and right now I already have a few vegetables growing. Lettuce was the first thing to plant.



e grão de bico (é a primeira vez que o semeio tão tarde, mas como ainda temos pela frente mais uns dois meses antes da chegada do tempo frio, devo conseguir colher qualquer coisa). A crescer entre eles, salsa e mangericão que cresceram espontaneamente.

Then I decided to try and sow chick peas. I know the summer is ending but we still have a couple of months before winter really arrives, meaning they should have enough time to grow.



A grande decepção veio dos feijões. De todos os que semeei (e não foram poucos) apenas tenho uma meia duzia de plantas. Espero que sejam suficientes para ter sementes novas para o ano que vem. As sementes que usei tinham 2 anos, não eram velhas portanto, esperava que a taxa de germinação fosse maior...

I also sowed some beans, but these were a major disappointment. Out of all the seeds I used (and it was a lot) I only got about half a dozen plants. The seeds I used were 2 years old, so I was expecting a higher germination rate. I hope to get some fresh seeds from these plants so I can sow them next year.



E beldroegas, muitas beldroegas... O canteiro que deveria estar cheio de feijoeiros está, em vez disso cheio de beldroegas. Sempre dá para umas sopas...

And apart from the things I sowed we have lots and lots of purslane. The bean bed is covered with it. I guess I will have to make soup out of them.

Couscous

É em dias como o de hoje que me arrependo de ser tão preguiçoso. Tudo isto (bem...menos o couscous) poderia ter saído da minha horta...mas em vez disso veio do supermercado. Porquê? Porque deixei a preguiça levar a melhor e acabei por não plantar nada este ano. A ultima colheita que fiz foram as favas e onde é que isso já vai.... Hoje comecei a preparar a terra para os cultivos de Outono e com um bocado de sorte ainda consigo semear e colher algum feijão rasteiro. Maldita preguiça!!

I was having lunch today and thinking "why oh why am I such a lazy gardener?" I could be eating freshly picked vegetables and instead all of this came from the supermarket. This was a terribly rainy winter and a terribly hot summer so I used those excuses to explain why I wasn't planting vegetables. The truth is I am just too lazy...
Starting today I'm preparing the soil for autumn cultures and with a bit of luck I can still sow and pick some beans. Why oh why am I such a lazy gardener....

Greve no galinheiro...outra vez... /Chickens on strike...again...

É outra vez aquela altura do ano em que as resolvem fazer greve. Já não bastava as duas pretas (Lola e Paquita) estarem chocas há coisa de 3 semanas agora é a vez da MariCarmen (que como não cabe no ninho fica deitada ao lado. Resumindo, das 4 só uma está a por ovos, o que não é muito bom. Tenho mesmo de ampliar o galinheiro e arranjar mais umas galinhas...

It's that time of year again. The girls are all going broody...Lola and Paquita (the black ones) have been sitting on the nest for the past 3 weeks and now is time for MariCarmen to sit next to them. This means that out of 4 chickens only one is laying. That's not very good is it? I really have to enlarge the chicken pen and get some more chickens...



Esperta é a Conchita que continua a pôr o seu ovinho diário e como tem o galinheiro só para si é sempre a primeira a chegar às goluseimas e a comer a melhor parte.

Conchita is the only one laying. This means she doesn't spend her time on the nest and has the whole pen for her. This also means she get all the treats.

Flores / Flowers

Desde o ano passado que os venho coleccionando. Esta primavera não têm feito mais nada senão florir numa explosão de cores.

I started colecting cactus last summer. And this is why...they just burst into flowers when spring arrives.

Visitas / Visitors

Mais uma vez os melros nidificaram no jardim. Desta vez não sei onde estáo ninho, mas a constante presença dos adultos no jardim não engana.

I think the blackbirds have nested in the garden again. I'm not sure where the nest is but seeing the adults in the garden is a sure sign of it.



Esta tarde era vê-los para cá e para lá em busca de comida.

This afternoon I spent a good half hour watching them as they came in surch of food.



E não fui só eu a reparar...

And I wasn't the only one...
