As miúdas / The girls

Depois de postar a foto dos ovos lembrei-me que há muito tempo não vos dou noticias das miúdas. Hoje foi dia de limpar o galinheiro e pôr palha nova. É sempre uma grande excitação o dia de limpeza. Muita palha nova para esgravatar, sementes de trigo perdidas lá no meio.

After my last post I remember its been a while since I last posted about the girls. Today was clean up day which is always motif of excitement. Lots of new straw to scratch around, lots of lost wheat seeds amongst it.



Embora já não sejam tão assustadiças continuam muito nervosas e de modo algum me deixam chegar perto (a não ser quando tenho alguma guloseima, o que não era o caso hoje).

They are still very nervous birds and they just won't let me go near them without having a nervous fit. Unless, of course, I bring them some treat (which wasn't the case today) like tomatoes or grapes.



Além da palha nova outro motivo de excitação foi um pé de acelgas que lhes dei. Nesta altura há menos erva para lhes dar e qualquer verdura da horta é motivo de grande entusiasmo.

Today I brought them a different type of treat. A bunch of swiss chard that was bolting. There isn't any grass for me to give them at this time of year, so any greens I bring them from the veg garden are very welcome.



Além das verduras, continuam a comer ração, milho, trigo, pão e todos os restos de comida da casa. São uma excelente forma de reciclagem.

Apart from fresh greens they eat chicken feed, wheat, corn , bread and all the food leftovers. They are a great way to recycle.





A ver pelos ovos que põem todos os dias (3-4 por dia) estão bem felizes as minhas miúdas.

Judging by the eggs they are laying (3-4 a day) they are a bunch of very happy girls.

Falei cedo demais /I spoke too soon

No outro dia comentava no Trumbuctu, que este ano os alhos tinham escapado à ferrugem. parece que falei cedo demais, hoje quando fui dar uma volta pela horta estive a vê-los com mais atenção e alguns deles estão afectados pela doença. Não são todas as plantas, nem de forma muito grave por isso não deve haver grande problema. Daqui a uma semana ou duas já os devo poder colher todos.

The other day as I visited Trumbuctu, I posted a comment saying that my garlic was rust free this year. Today as I was walking around the vegetable garden I spoted a few plants that have it. Just a few, and not very seriously, so there shouldn't be a problem. I will be able to pick them i a week or two.

Colheita do dia /Todays harvest

Apanhados há coisa de duas semanas, têm estado a secar e hoje foi dia de os limpar e guardar. Não sei que variedade são (eram alhos de supermercado) mas vêm mesmo a calhar porque os alhos do ano passado estavam a acabar.

Harvested two weeks ago, they have been drying and today they were cleaned and storaged. They weren't any particular variety (supermarket garlic) but they were ready for harvest just in time since last year's garlic is almost finished.

No jardim/ In the garden

O tempo tem estado quente e seco nos últimos tempos e no jardim já se vai fazendo sentir a falta de uma rega. Este período é especialmente perigoso para o meu jardim uma vez que estamos a sair do período em que a água da chuva era suficiente para o manter em bom estado para iniciarmos o período de verão em que tenho de me lembrar de o regar de vez em quando. Hoje andei a dar uma volta e algumas plantas já apresentam sinais de precisar de água.

We've been having warm dry weather these past few weeks and the garden is starting to need some watering. This is a dangerous period for my garden because I'm lost the habit of watering the garden (the last time I did that was probably in last September) during the winter time. I was walking around the garden this morning and realised that some of the plants really needed some watering.



Vai daí, e embalado pelo trabalho que tive a fazer o sistema de rega para a horta resolvi fazer um sistema de rega para o jardim.

So, after all the work in the vegetable garden, I decided to built a irrigation system for the garden.



Nada de complicado, apenas um tubo com gotejadores ao longo de todo o jardim. Desta vez utilizei um tubo de 12mm vendido já com os gotejadores incorporados. É bastante mais pratico e acaba por sair bastante mais barato.

Nothing too fancy, just a 12mm tube going around the garden. This time I used a tube with incorporated emmiters. Its a lot easier and less expensive.



As flores do Echium já estão a desaparecer, daqui a uns dias terei de as cortar para não formarem semente.

Around the garden the Echium flowers are fading. I will need to cut them in a few days.



Em contrapartida as stacides e as lavandas estão começar a florir. Deste modo o jardim tem sempre flores para alegrar a vista.

Lavendars and lamb's ears are starting to bloom. This way the garden is never short of flowers.

Terminado! /It's done

Depois de quase duas semanas, muitas idas à loja para comprar peças que afinal faziam falta e uma tremenda crise de dores nas costas finalmente consegui terminar o sistema de rega da horta. Faz uma grande diferença em termos de tempo despendido a regar e quantidade de água gasta. Com uma rega mais eficaz as plantas respondem depressa e crescem muito melhor. Na foto acima o canteiro das alfaces que começam a ficar boas para apanhar (da esquerda para a direita "folha de carvalho", "rainha de Maio", "lolo rosso", "maravilha das quatro estações" e "batavia").

After 2 weeks of hard work, a lot of trips to the store to buy some more materials and an excruciating back pain, I finally got the drip irrigation system done. It makes a lot of diference in the amount of time I have to spend watering the vegetables and in the amount of water spent. The plants are growing a lot faster at this time of year with warmer temperatures and an efficient watering. Pictured above is the lettuce patch. They are big enough to be harvested now (from left to right, 'oak leaf', 'queen of May', 'lolo rosso', '4 seasons wonder' and 'batavia'.



No mesmo canteiro crescem ainda duas alfaces "sherwood". As sementes foram-me dadas numa troca , mas apenas estas duas germinaram. Não vão ser comidas e ficam para produzir semente.

Also growing in the lettuce patch, 'sherwood' lettuce. I got these seeds in a seed swap, but they probably were old seed since only two of them germinated. I'm not eating these and will keep them until they bolt. I want to save their seeds for next year.



Noutro canteiro (junto aos tumpinabos) crescem alfaces "ears of the devil", "flame" e "australian yellow leave".

In another bed, with the jerusalem artichokes, I'm growing a few other lettuce varieties ('ears of the devil', 'flame' and australian yellow leaf'.



Os alhos franceses começaram a dar flor,

Leeks are starting to bolt,



assim como as cebolas. Posso estar enganado mas tanto como sei tanto um como outro só deveriam florir no segundo ano mas aqui na minha horta florescem logo no primeiro ano(já o ano passado aconteceu o mesmo com as cebolas)

as are onions. I might be wrong, but I thought these were biennials, meaning that they should only bolt in their second year. Well, in my vegetable garden they are bolting in their first year (I sowed them last November)



As couves "red russian" já cresceram um bom bocado. Qualquer dia já podem começar a ser colhidas. Tenho alguma curiosidade quanto ao sabor.

Red russian kale is a lot bigger. It will be ready for harvesting soon.I'm really curious about what it tastes like.



Os primeiros feijoeiros já começam também a florir. Estes são feijão francês amarelo. Por qualquer motivo grande parte das sementes de feijão que semeei este ano acabaram por não germinar, as sementes provavelmente seriam velhas e já não germinaram.

The first beans are blooming now. These are yellow wax beans. For some reason many of the bean seeds I used this year didn't make it. Maybe they were old seeds...



Também já comecei a colher fruta, morangos(que não fotografei antes de comer) e framboesas amarelas.

I'm also starting to collect some fruit like strawberries (which I didn't manage to photograph before they vanished into my mouth) and yellow raspberries.



Para mais tarde estão reservadas as nectarinas que crescem de dia para dia.

And latter on I will be collecting loads of nectarines. The tree is loaded with fruits.
