Novos vizinhos/New neigbours

Fiquei deliciado por encontrar este lagarto estendido a tentar aquecer-se ao sol. Adoro lagartos e o facto de eles andarem por aqui atesta a boa saúde do "ecossistema jardim".

I was thrilled to find his little guy basking in the sun. I just love lizards and finding one in the garden tells me the garden is in good health.



Durante o ano passado trouxe alguns para o jardim (a gata do sitio onde trabalho andava com a mania de os caçar e eu trazia todos os que conseguia salvar). É bom ver que pelo menos um se sentiu suficientemente à vontade para ficar por cá.

I brought a few of them to may garden during last year (the cat at work was hunting them every day and I brought all the ones I could save from her). Good to see that at least one was comfortable enough to stay.



E foi suficientemente simpático para me deixar fazer uma série de fotografias.

And he was patient enough to allow me a few shots.

Os frescos cá da horta /Fresh food

Esta á a melhor época da horta, com todos os vegetais a crescerem de dia para dia. Vamos dar uma olhadela ao que cresce cá na horta. Começamos com as alfaces (cerca de 10 variedades).

The best time of year is starting in the veg garden. Vegetables are growing like mad. Lets have a look at what is growing , shall we?. Lettuce to start with (10 different varieties. Can you tell I like lettuce?)



Espinafres. Estes foram semeados no inicio do ano, mas só agora é que estão realmente a crescer. Tenho comido espinafres quase todos os dias.

Spinach. These were sowed early this year, but it only really started to grow a few weeks ago. I'm eating spinach almost every day now.



Acelgas. Estas foram uma surpresa agradável. Nunca tinha comido antes de as semear na horta. Semeei-as o ano passado mas só este ano começaram a crescer como deve ser.

Swiss chard. I had never tried these before growing them (you wont find them for sale around here) and they were a very pleasant surprise. They were sowed last year but they hardly grew during Summer. With the cooler temperatures they are growing very well. And they are delicious.



As favas voltaram a rebentar e a dar flores. Parece que vamos ter mais favas.

Broad beans are growing and blooming again. Looks like we will have more broad beans.



Ervilhas. Apenas 4 sementes germinaram, pelo que este ano ainda não as vou poder provar. No entanto parece que vou ter bastantes sementes para o ano.

Purple podded peas. I'm not eating these this year. Since I had only 4 seeds sprouting I have to save all the seeds for next year. Looks like I will have enough.



Pepinos. Ainda dentro dos garrafões mais por causa do frio que dos caracóis. Quando o tempo voltar a aquecer logo os destapo.

Cucumbers. They are still under the plastic bottles because its still a bit cold. They will be uncovered once the weather warms up.



As batatas estão a crescer bem.

Potatoes are growing nicely.



Algumas couves tronchudas que ainda ficaram do Inverno.

A few cabbages left from winter planting.



Couve galega. Debaixo da qual o Pascoal passa os dias a vigiar a horta.

Kale (I believe its called walking stick kale).



Este é um outro tipo de couve que semeei este ano. Red russian kale (não faço ideia que nome terá em português)

Tomates. Ainda está um bocadinho frio, mas eles parecem estar a aguentar-se bem.

Lembram-se das cenouras que ia transplantar? Estão a crescer bem no meio das cebolas.

And the baby carrots I transplanted are growing just fine amongst the onions.



Beterrabas, recentemente transplantadas. Já não passo sem beterrabas (há um ano atrás detestava)

Recently transplanted beets. I can't be without them (funny to think I used to hate them before growing them in my garden)



E para finalizar, outra coisa completamente nova. Oca.

Oca. this is another new crop to me. I have no idea what the tubercles will taste like.

O primeiro morango/ The first strawberry

Comi o primeiro morango esta manhã. Delicioso! Os outros ainda têm de crescer e amadurecer um bocado.

I ate the first strawberry of the season this morning. Delicious! Can't wait for the others to start ripening.



Mas há mais fruta a caminho, como as nectarinas...

But we have more fruit growing at the moment, like nectarines...

E a macieira que plantei este ano está agora a florir. Será que vamos ter maçãs? Esta é uma Bravo Esmolfe, as maçãs são deliciosas.
Também a florir nesta altura está a laranjeira, o limoeiro, a toranjeira e a amoreira. As pereiras, depois do promissor ano passado, voltaram a não dar nada.

And the apple tree that I planted a few months ago is now blooming. I wonder if we will have any apples? I hope so, this is a portuguese variety, Bravo Esmolfe with the most delicious, perfumed apples.
The orange tree, lemon tree, grapefruit tree and the blackberries are also blooming at the moment. The pear treas, after last year promising season are back to not bearing even one fruit.

Creme de Favas /Broad Bean Cream

A pedido de muitas famílias aqui vai a receita da dita sopa.

Ingredientes:
0,5 kg favas descascadas
0,3 kg batatas
2 dentes de alho picados
1 cebola picada
1 molho de coentros
Azeite e sal qb

Numa panela faz-se um refogado com o azeite e alho. Junta-se a cebola e os coentros picados. Mexe-se sempre para que não aloure. Juntam-se as favas, as batatas descascadas e cortadas em cubos e 1 litro de água com sal. Deixa-se ao lume até que esteja tudo cozido. Passa-se com a varinha mágica e serve-se.

Nota: É importante pelar as favas para que o creme fique mais saboroso e com textura mais agradavel. As favas congeladas são mais faceis de pelar que as frescas.

Ask and you shell receive...Here goes the soup recipe:
You will need:
0,5kg of peeled broad beans
0,3kg potatoes
2 cloves of garlic
1 onion
1 bunch of cilantro
olive oil
salt

Chop the garlic and put it in a pan with the olive oil. when the garlic is half cooked (should not be allowed to brown) add the chopped onion end chopped cilantro. Keep mixing it so that it cooks without browning. Add the broad beans and the potatoes (peeled and cut in cubes). Add 1 litter of water. Season it with salt and let it cook. When everything is well cooked blend it , check the seasoning and serve.

It's really important that you peel the broad beans. The texture and taste wont be the same if you don't. Its a bit time consuming, but you can use frozen broad beans that are easier to peel.

Vegetais engarrafados/ Bottled veggies

Quem vier à minha horta por estes dias vai-se deparar com canteiros cheios de garrafas e garrafões de plástico. Este foi o método mais eficaz de luta contra os caracóis que encontrei. Não os mata, é certo, mas permite que as plantas cresçam o suficiente para não serem totalmente devoradas pelas criaturas. Outro método que experimentei foi o dos pratinhos/tacinhas com cerveja. É um método descrito por muita gente ( e sugerido em dois comentários) mas na minha opinião muito pouco ou nada eficiente. Em teoria os caracóis deviam sentir-se atraídos pala cerveja, e ao beber cairiam lá dentro morrendo afogados (e muito bêbados). Pois ou os caracóis que por aqui andam são abstémios ou aguentam a bebida como gente grande porque nunca lá vi nenhum bêbado/morto. Já as lesmas essas aparecem (suponho que aguentam pior a bebida) bem como toda uma panóplia de insectos incluindo um ou dois pirilampos (o que não é nada bom pois os pirilampos alimentam-se de caracóis e se os desato a embebedar/matar os outros ficam ainda mais à vontade pela horta). Ainda assim com o método das garrafas há um ou outro caracol mais esperto que descobre como entrar na garrafa e devora a plantinha, mas as baixas são muito poucas. O grande inconveniente é que são necessários grandes quantidades de garrafas/garrafões o que faz com que tenhamos de nos precaver com antecedência guardando e pedindo a amigos e família para guardar tudo o que é garrafa e garrafão.

O que eu desaconselho em absoluto são as pastilhas de veneno para caracois. São altamente toxicas e se algum outro animal (cão, gato, ave) ou mesmo uma criança as ingerir poderá ter uma morte horrivel.

Anyone that comes into my vegetable garden will probably find very strange the amount of plastic bottles in my raised beds. Well that's the most efficient way of fighting the snails that I came up with. It doesn't kill them,( I still have to collect them and feed them to the girls for that), but it allows the plants to grow enough so that the snails won't eat them in one night. I tried the beer in a plate method but quite frankly it doesn't work. Theoretically the snails should be attracted by the beer and drink until they drop, drowning them selfs in the beer plate. Well either these snails don't drink alcohol or they can take it very, very well. I never found any dead snails inside the beer plate, not even one. Slugs on the other hand will drink and drown (I guess they can't take the alcohol as well as snails) but they aren't really a problem in my garden. I also found quite a lot of insects inside the beer trap like ants and glowworms (which not good at all since glowworms prey on snails). With the plastic bottles the large majority of the seedlings will survive (every now and them a smarter snail gets inside a plastic bottle and muches on the tinny plant but that is rare). The biggest difficulty is getting the huge amount of plastic bottles you need, so you might have to think about it in advance and ask all your family and friends to keep them for you, but hey, better to reuse than to throw them in the garbage.

I would like to advise you to not use snail/slug poison. If any other animal like a dog, a cat, a bird or even a small child swallows it it will most certainly die a terrible death

Colheita do dia /Todays harvest

Acho que vou fazer Creme de Favas, uma das minhas sopas favoritas, e uma das melhores maneiras de comer favas.

I think I will turn them into Broad Bean Cream, one of my favorite soups and one of the best ways to taste broad beans.

Novas sementes /New seeds

As sementes da "Colher para semear" já chegaram (na realidade chegaram há umas semanas mas eu esqueci-me de vos dizer). Enviaram-me sementes de Grão de bico preto (na foto), Feijão Branco de trepar, Feijão Frade miúdo cara preta , Melão pele de sapo, Abóbora verde bexigosa e Pastinacas. De fora ficaram muitas outras que gostaria de receber, mas o limite era de 6 variedades apenas. Para o ano poderei escolher outras.

I finally got the seeds from "Colher para Semear" (actually I got them a few weeks ago, but forgot to mention it). I received the following seeds, Black chick pea (pictured above), Winter squash Verde bexigosa (green warted), Cow peas miudo cara preta (little black face), Melon Pele de sapo (toad skin), White pole bean, and Parsnips. They had a lot of other seeds I would like to receive but I could only get 6. Next year I will get to choose different ones.



Ainda é demasiado cedo para a maioria destas semente ir para a terra (são todas sementes que gostam de tempo quente para germinar e crescer) Por isso por agora as únicas semeadas foram as pastinacas. Este é um vegetal sobre o qual sempre tive muita curiosidade. Confesso que nunca comi mas tenho muita curiosidade, tudo o que tenho lido é muito abonatório. Em teoria deviam ser semeadas directamente na terra, mas como a minha experiência com sementeiras directas não tem sido boa ("por vias" dos caracóis que devoram tudo) optei por semeá-las em rolos de papel higiénico para depois transplantar para a horta. Esse vai ser outro problema já que a terra da horta é muito pedregosa e provavelmente não conseguirei raízes direitas, bonitinhas como se vê nas fotografias. Logo se vê, por agora já fico contente se germinarem (as sementes de pastinaca não germinam facilmente)

Its still not warm enough to most of them so I only sowed the parsnips. Its my first time with parsnip seeds (in fact I never even ate one but everything I eared and read was tempting). From what I read they should be direct sowed but since my direct sowing hasn't been very successful (mainly because snails eat every thing) I decided to sow the in toilet paper rolls and when they are big enough transplant them to the garden. I probably will not have very nice parsnips because my soil has too many rocks, but as long as they are tasty I really don't mind if they are crocked.
