Têm estado ocupadas as miúdas/ They've been busy

Na realidade deveria ter escrito a miúda, uma vez que só a MariCarmen é que põe ovos neste momento, mas não quero ser acusado de discriminação nem traumatizar nenhuma galinha pré-púbere...

Or should I say "she's been busy"? Actually MariCarmen is the only laying hen around here, but I don't want to discriminate any one, nor do I want to have chickens with the "I think I can't lay" complex...



Mas como eu ia dizendo...têm estado bem ocupada(s) a(s) miúda(s). Desde que começou a por, e exceptuando um dia de pausa (na passada quinta feira) tem posto sempre um ovo por dia. Hoje também não pôs, o que me faz pensar que se calhar quita feira é o dia de folga.

But has I was saying they've been very busy. Ever since she started laying I've had a fresh egg every day with the exception of last thursday and today (maybe thursday is her day off).



As outras miúdas não devem tardar muito a começar a pôr. Têm-se desenvolvido bastante nos últimos dias e já têm cristas bastante maiores.

But the other girls shouldn't be long before starting to lay. They have become bigger and have larger combs.



A próxima a iniciar a postura deve ser a Conchita que, não fosse ter a crista dobrada para o lado esquerdo, seria praticamente impossível de distinguir da irmã (cuja crista dobra para a direita).

The next one starting to lay should be Conchita. If not for the fact that her comb is folding towards the left She would be virtually impossible to distinguish from her sister (whose comb turns towards the right side).



A ultima deve ser a Paquita, sempre menos desenvolvida que as outras, sempre muito mais tímida que as outras, mas na minha opinião a mais bonita de todas.

Paquita should be the last one to start laying. She is the least developed one, and keeps on being the shiest but still the prettiest of them all.



E lembram-se da Lola? A "quase-galo"? Pois para minha grande surpresa (sempre pensei nela como a "galinha feia") Está-se a transformar numa bonita galinha. A adivinhar pelo tamanho da crista, também não deve demorar muito a começar a pôr.

And do you remember Lola? The one that I thought it would be a rooster? Well not only is she a female, as she is becoming a very beautiful bird (I always thought of her as the ugly chicken)

Começou!/It started!

Os primeiros já cá cantam! Hoje quando fui limpar o galinheiro encontrei os dois primeiros ovos. Como ontem chovia a cântaros não verifiquei se havia ovos ou não pelo que acho que devem ser um de ontem e outro de hoje. Como é lógico a principal suspeita é a MariCarmen. Mais dia menos dia as outras deve começar também.

The first eggs have been laid. I've found them this morning when I went out to clean the chicken coop. I supose one of them is from yesterday (it was raining so much I didn't bother to look for hypothetical eggs).
The main suspect is MariCarmen, but I suppose the others shouldn't be too long.

Pegada ecológica /Ecological footprint

Encontrei este questionário que nos permite medir a nossa pegada ecológica. Depois de responder cheguei à conclusão de que embora esteja bastante abaixo da média nacional ainda preciso de mudar algumas coisas no meu estilo de vida se o quiser tornar sustentável. É que se toda a gente vivesse como eu precisávamos de 1,22 planetas...

I've just found this quiz that will helps us measure our ecological footprint. After answering to all questions I realized there are still some changes to be done in my live if I want it to be sustainable. I mean...we would need 1,22 planets if everyone lived like me....

Pechinchas..../ Bargains...

Devem-se lembrar de eu ter plantado uma larageira e uma tangerineira há coisa de duas semanas... As árvores foram uma pechincha, compradas num certo supermercado de nome começado por L, terminado em L e com as letras ID pelo meio.

You might remember that I planted an orange tree and a tangerine two weeks ago...I bought the trees, for a very small price, in a supermarket, and was very happy with the bargain.



O que eu não vos mostrei foi o estado das raizes dessas árvores. Quando as tirei dos respectivos vasos, a terra desfez-se e a raiz ficou assim...nua. Num dos meus muito raros acessos de optimismo, plantei as árvores pensando que "como está a chover, como são pequenas, pode ser que a coisa corra bem".

Until, that is, I took the trees out of the pot. This is how they looked...no root ball, just a few sad little roots. I'm not an optimist by nature, but this time I decided that things were going to be alright, and the trees would survive.



Não correu, e ontem estavam as duas com este aspecto. Escusado será dizer que foram arrancadas e substituídas, desta vez por árvores compradas a quem sabe o que faz, o que diz e o que vende.

They didn't...and this is what they looked like yesterday.
Of course I riped them of and replaced them by two new trees. This time I bought them where I usually buy all my fruit trees.



Além de ter bom aspecto e ser maior tinha umas raizes e, excelentes condições. Custou 4 vezes mais que a primeira, mas sinceramente parece-me que valeu a pena. Serviu-me para aprender a não confiar nas pechinchas que às vezes se vêem por aí à venda.

They costed me 4 times as much as the others, but in comparison, the root ball was very healthy and the trees a lot bigger. This will teach me not to buy the first bargain I see.

Já não deve faltar muito!/It shouldn't be long now!

Esta foi tirada há precisamente 2 semanas. A diferença é abismal, não? A miúda está crescidissima! Com esta crista já não deve faltar muito para começar a "botar" o seu ovo.

This one was taken precisely 2 weeks ago. Can you see the difference? Amazing no? The girls has grown a lot! It shouldn't be long before she starts laying her first eggs.

Conversas de galinheiro / Chicken talk

Finalmente um dia sem chuva! Já nem sei há quanto tempo não passava um bocadinho com as miúdas...
Tem sido só abri-lhes a porta da capoeira e dar-lhes de comer a correr. Esta manhã depois de alguns trabalhos na horta passei um bom bocado com elas.

Today we finally had a day without rain. Because of the wet weather its been a while since I last spent some time with the girls. Today, after some work in the veg garden, into the chicken pen I went.



No inicio andavam um pouco arredias, na vidinha delas, a comer a erva que lhes dei...

They were not very interested in me at first. Their attention was on the weeds I took them...



Mas aos poucos lá as "convenci" a aproximarem-se. Primeiro, como sempre, a MariCarmen..

But then I managed to "convince" them to come closer. The first to approached me was, as usual MariCarmen...



Cada vez mais perto...

And closer she came...

How was she convinced?



Com uvas, claro! A mais recente iguaria do galinheiro.

With grapes, naturally! It's the girls most recent gastronomic delight.

Claro que quando as miúdas se aperceberam que havia uvas vieram todas a correr.

As soon as the news spread all the girls came running.

Tudo,claro, sob a atenta supervisão do guardião da horta/galinheiro.

All this under the close supervision of the veg garden/chicken keeper, of course.

Chuva /Rain

Não tem parado de chover nos últimos dias (pelo menos nos meus dias de folga) pelo que não consigo fazer grande coisa no jardim. A grande vantagem das chuvas (ele há outras, eu sei, mas apetece-me debruçar só sobre esta) é que os tremoços que semeei a semana passada já começaram a germinar.
Não, a ideia não é comer tremoços com uma "bejeca", é , isso sim usar os tremoços como "adubo verde". Isto quer dizer que vamos deixar os tremoços crescerem até começarem a florir, nessa altura o solo será revolvido e as plantas ficarão enterradas. Os nutrientes todos acumulados nas plantas serão então devolvidos à terra. Por serem leguminosas os tremoços têm ainda a vantagem de fixar azoto no solo por meio de microorganismos existentes nas suas raízes.

Its been raining non stop for the past few days (well at least during all my days of) so I haven't been doing much in the garden. The big advantage of all this rain (among others, I know) is that all the white lupine seeds I sowed last week are sprouting.
Here in portugal, during summer, we eat tle lupine seed (after beeing boiled and kept in salty water) with fresh beer, but that was not my intention when I sowed these. I plan on using them as green manure, so by the time they start blooming they will be buried bringing all those nutrients back to the soil. Also, since lupine is a legume, they will fixate nitrogen in the soil making it more fertile for the crops that follow.
