Sementes/Seeds

O Patrick do blog "Bifurcated carrots" tem escrito ultimamente sobre a importancia de conservarmos as nossas próprias sementes (Ele escreve muito melhor que eu e sabe muito mais sobre o assunto por isso aconselho-os a dar lá um saltinho). Está em formação uma "rede de sementes" que nos possibilitará trocar sementes entre nós. Ainda não tinha aderido porque sinceramente não tenho grandes sementes para trocar. No entanto acho que devo por essas poucas variedades ao dispor de quem delas precise. Se alguém estiver interessado nalgumas sementes só tem que pedir (não tenho muitas por isso terei de as racionar). As sementes que tenho para oferecer são de coentros, salsa, rábano, e melancia (variedade riscada).

Patrick of Bifurcated carrots has been posting a lot about seed saving (he is a much better writer than I am and knows much more about it than I do, so I invite you to visit his blog) He is also forming a blogger's seed network that will allow us to share our seeds. I've been considering if I should join the network since I hardly have any seeds to share and have finally realised that any seeds are welcome so here it goes. If any of you will need/want any of my seeds please send me an email and we will see what we can arrange. The seeds I'm putting in for the blogger's seed network are cilantro, watermelon (striped) and rábano (a portuguese radish with big crisp and slightly picant roots)

No jardim /In the garden

Estas são fotos do jardim ontem à tarde. Quem não soubesse poderia pensar que por aqui é primavera. Na verdade os dias ainda estão quentes mas à noite as temperaturas baixam muito. Quem não se parece importar nada com isso são as plantas que crescem e florescem lindamente.

Hoje não me apetece escrever grande coisa, por isso deixo-vos apreciar o jardim em silencio.

These are pictures from yesterday . If you didn't know you might think its spring. Though night temperatures are quite low the days are warm and the plants keep on growing and blooming. I'm not in the mood for writing so I'll just leave you with the pictures.

Coisas boas /Good food

Já sei que este não é (nem pretende ser) um blog culinário, mas não posso deixar de compartilhar esta receita convosco. Descobri-a no blog da minha amiga jennie e é provavelmente uma das melhores receitas que experimentei ultimamente. Se são vegetarianos ou como eu gostam de comida vegetariana (e da outra também) têm de experimentar estas almôndegas de beringela. Se nunca experimentaram beringelas esta é uma óptima maneira de as comer pela primeira vez.
Como sempre não segui a receita à letra e substituí os queijos recomendados por queijo da ilha e não usei o molho de pimento assado. Tudo o resto foi feito da mesma maneira. Experimentem-nas com uma salada verde ou umas beterrabas assadas no forno.

I know this isn't (and it is not going to become) a cooking blog but I just had to share this recipe with you. I came across it on my friend jennie's blog and it is possibly the best recipe I've tried lately. If your are a vegetarian or you just like to try something new, you have to try these eggplant meatballs. If you have never tried eggplant before this is a great way to try it for the first time. I didn't follow the recipe entirely and replaced the parmesan and cheddar cheeses by a portuguese cheese and I didn't use the roasted pepper sauce. Nevertheless they were delicious with a green salad and some roasted beets.

Ultimos frutos de verão /Last summer fruits

Ainda ando a colher as ultimas beringelas (muito pequenas mas saborosas), os ultimos tomates e as ultimas malaguetas. Por enquanto ainda não me consegui convencer a arrancar as plantas (sempre que lá vou com essa ideia encontro uma quantidade de novos frutos a crescer)mas já não deve faltar muito.

I'm still harvesting tomatoes, eggplants and chillies. I haven't been able to pull the plants out since they keep on producing lovely fruits (aubergines are my new passion).

Caso estejam interessados este é o jogo preferido dele. O "corre atrás de mim e vê lá se me consegues tirar o tronco/bola/brinquedo".Depois dos 10 anos (feitos hoje) parece que voltou à infância outra vez. E eu todo contente de o ver assim.

In case you're interested, this is "try to catch me and take my toy from me", his favorite game. He is 10 years hold today and it seems he is experiencing a second childhood. I'm happy to see him that well.

Colheita do dia /todays harvest

Tumpinabos. Nem sei bem como cozinhá-los, mas têm fama de ser deliciosos. Por agora só os provei crus e usei numa sopa. Se alguém tiver receitas para compartilhar que se chegue à frente.

Sunchokes (or jerusalem artichokes if you prefer). I'm not quite sure how to cook them, so I'm hopping any of you readers will send me some recipes. I've tried them raw and in soup and I really liked them.

Visitas /Visitors

Encontrei-o hoje quando andava a cavar para iniciar a plantação de alho. Mais uma ajuda para manter a horta livre de pragas. (caso se estejam a perguntar...é um sapo)

I found him this morning when I was digging the new garlic bed. He will give a great help in keeping the garden pests away. (its a toad...in case you're wondering)
