Lembram-se daquelas amoras? Foram o meu pequeno almoço...
Um conselho....se forem apanhar amoras silvestres, não levem um cão preto de grandes dimensões que consiga comer amoras mais depressa do que vocês as conseguem apanhar.

Remember those blackberries? Well, I had them for breakfast.
Just a word of advice... If you ever go blackberry picking don't take you big black dog...he will eat the berries faster than you can pick them.

Vamos passear? / Shall we go for a walk?

Já há algum tempo que não faço as minhas caminhadas diárias. Mais ou menos desde que o calor começou. Com a desculpa de que faz muito calor para os cães aguentarem a caminhada, que tenho de regar a horta de manhã cedo antes de ir trabalhar, mas na realidade a verdadeira razão é a grande dose de preguiça que me atacou com a chegada do calor. Hoje, depois de ver o estrago causado por quase 3 meses de inactividade (quase 4 quilos), resolvi-me e lá me levantei decidido a caminhar.



It's been a while since I last did my daily walks. Maybe since the temperatures started to rise. I remember thinking that it was probably to hot for the dogs, or that I need to attend to the veg garden before going to work, but really...I've just been lazy. So today, after realizing the damage that almost 3 months of doing no exercise (almost 4 kilos) I started walking again.

A paisagem mudou completamente nestes dois meses, quase parece que estamos noutro sitio. Onde tudo era verde e em flor na primavera, agora é castanho, amarelo, seco.

The landscape changed a lot in these few months and where you would find green plants and flowers now everything is golden brown and dry.

No entanto, algumas plantas como esta Pistacia lentiscus conseguem ainda manter o aspecto verde que tinham na primavera. São praticamente as unicas plantas verdes que se encontram pelos campos.

Only a few plants like Pistacia lentiscus keep their green color and look the same as during spring. They're the only green spots you can find in the scenery.

As flores deram lugar frutos e sementes. Optima altura para eu colher algumas sementes de plantas nativas que gostaria de introduzir no meu jardim.

Where there were flowers now there are fruits and seeds, making this the perfect opportunity for me to bring some seeds home. There are a lot of natives I would like to try in my garden.

Embora para a maior parte das pessoas este possa ser um cenário horrivel, onde tudo parece ter morrido esta paisagem em tons dourados não deixa de ter a sua beleza.

Though everything is dry and brown, I still can think of it as ugly. I think that the shades of golden and brown have their own beauty.

Especialmente quando vista de perto. Algumas capsulas de sementes têm cores e formas bastante atraentes.

Specially when seen upclose, like these seed capsules. They have a wonderful reddish brown color.

E se procurarmos bem encontramos alguns tesouros escondidos. Amanhã tenho de me lembrar de trazer um saco...

And, if you look carefully enough you'll find some hidden treasures. I have to remember to bring a bag tomorrow...

Isto é, se "alguém" não as comer todas hoje!

Hum....com sorte está mais interessado nos figos.

Luckily he seems more interested in ripe figs.

Jardim em Agosto / August garden

Eu sei, ultimamente só tenho falado na horta e nos produtos da horta e nos futuros produtos da horta e na horta, horta, horta, horta....Voces já devem andar fartos. Por isso hoje falamos do jardim. O motivo pelo qual quase não tenho falado sobre o que se passa no jardim é que, na realidade....não se passa nada. Com a chegada do Verão e do calor a maior parte das plantas entrou em repouso. O facto de as regas serem limitadas também não ajuda muito e o jardim está quase despido de flores. Não está feio, na minha opinião, mas eu sei que a maior parte das pessoas gostam é de flores. Assim sendo, se para aí estiverem virados, venham comigo visitar o jardim (quase) sem flores.


I know you are all probably tired of reading posts and more posts about my vegetable garden, so today we will talk about the garden. The reason why I haven't posted about the garden in the last weeks is that there is nothing going on there. With Summer and its hot temperatures most plants went into summer rest (I think that the fact that I'm not watering them that much also played a role in that). The garden itself doesn't look bad (or so I think) but there aren't many flowers. And lets face it, people like flowers!




A Salvia leucantha, Teucrium chamaedris e Ballota pseudodictamus todas a precisarem de uma poda pós floração. No entanto só as irei podar quando começarem a dar indicios de um novo crescimento (daqui a umas semanas) caso contrario o jardim fica muito despido para o meu gosto.

Por aqui o mesmo problema desta vez com Santolina chamaecyparissus e Phlomis fruticosa. A Satureja montana ainda continua a florir.

Echium candicans, Salvia officinalis, Leonotis leonurus e mais uma vez Phlomis fruticosa.

As hortelãs na base da romanzeira também mostram sinais de stress hidrico e precisam de um corte. As romãs, essas crescem a olhos vistos.

All the mints under the pomegranate are showing signs of drought and need a good pruning too. Pomegranates are growing and swelling fast.

As gramineas embora não estejam do seu melhor, sempre conferem algum interesse a este canteiro, enquanto o Sedum telepuium"Matrona" não floresce.

Grasses, though not looking its best are still a major focus point in this border. Meanwhile Sedum "Matrona" is getting ready to bloom.




Achillea sp. Esta é uma planta que surpreendeu muito pela positiva, não só aguenta lindamente a falta de rega como ainda por cima cresce e floresce. Vou ter de arranjar mais destas.



Achillea sp. This was a big surprise to me. A positive surprise, since not only does it stand the drought but it grows and blooms during the hot Summer months. I've got to get more of these.




Sedum spectabile quase a florir. Gosto muito do contraste entre estas flores e as gramineas. Esta tem por trás um Penisetum rubrum.

Sedum spectabile is almost blooming. I really like the contrast of these plants and grasses. This one has Penisetum rubrum at its background.




A Stachys lanata, depois de parecer morta durante semanas começou a crescer novamente. Pode ser que as plantas estejam aos poucos a sair do repouso estival.

Stachys lanata is coming back after apeared dead for weeks. Maybe this is the first sign that Summer rest is over.




A Rudbeckia fulgida nunca esteve tão bonita como este ano, embora ainda não esteja tão bem como eu gostaria. No proximo ano terei de lhe dar um pouco mais de água acho eu.

Rudbeckia fulgida. This is its second year and it looks a lot better than last year. Still not as good as I would like. I will try to water it a bit more next year.




Croscomia sp é uma das poucas flores do momento.

Croscomia sp is one of the few bloomers at the moment.




Outra das floridas é esta Salvia (não sei a especie ao certo). Ainda é bastante pequena, mas desde que a plantei ainda não parou de florir.

Another one is this salvia (species unknown). Still rather small but it's always covered with flowers.





E claro, as lavandas. Essas estão em flor quase 12 meses por ano. Agosto não é excepção.



And, offcourse, lavenders. They bloom almost year round. August is no exception.

Os primeiros feijões /First beans

Também já comecei a colher os primeiros feijões secos. Estes são da variedade "Dog Bean" e foram-me oferecidos pelo Patrick. Apenas algumas das sementes germinaram pelo que não tive possibilidade de colher os feijões verdes. Estes vão ser as sementes do ano que vem.

I'm also starting to pick the first beans. These are Dog beans, offered to me by Patrick. Not many of the original seeds sprouted , so I didn't have the chance to try them as green beans. These will be next year seeds and hopefully they will all sprout.

Está a começar.../Its starting...

Adivinhem o que comi hoje ao pequeno almoço. O primeiros dois figos do ano (com essas fotos não era dificil adivinhar). Ainda não estavam perfeitamente maduros mas já deu para matar saudades e aguçar o apetite para os que aí vêm. É quase epoca de doce de figos hmmmm...

So guess what I had for breakfast this morning. That's right, the first figs of the season! (but you knew that already, right?) They were not fully ripe, but what a flavor! Fig jam season is almost there!
