Melancias/Watermelons

Colhi a minha primeira melancia este fim de semana. Não parece na fotografia, mas era minuscula (para melancia), menor que uma bola de andebol. Assim tipo dose individual. O que lhe faltava em tamanho compensava em sabor.

Harvested my first watermelon this weekend. A very tiny watermelon, smaller that an handball. Kind of an individual dose of watermelon. Very tasty despite its small size.

Batatas...mais uma vez/Potatoes...once again

Finalmente arranquei as ultimas batatas. Já estava a ficar enervado com o tempo que aquilo levava a crescer e a ficar bom para colher. É que já tenho outras culturas em fila de espera, destinadas aquela porção de terra. Mas não é disso que quero falar hoje. Quando estava a arrancar as batatas reparei em duas delas, com um aspecto diferente, mais escuras, mais rijas. Cortei-as e estavam escuras por dentro, improprias para consumo. Alguém sabe o que se passou? Doença, praga, ou simplesmente um daqueles fenómenos da natureza que não se explicam?

I finally got to harvest my last potatoes. Finally! They were taking too long to be ready to harvest and I have other crops destined for that peace of soil. But this is not what I want to write about today. As I was harvesting the potatoes I noticed that two of them were different, darker and harder. So I went to get a knife and cut them in half, and this is what I found. Does any of you have any idea about what caused it? Some pest, some disease, or some inexplicable natural phenomena?

Finalmente ganhei coragem para realizar uma tarefa que há muito andava a adiar. Podar o Echium candicans . Não que a tarefa seja dificil, mas porque das outras vezes que a realizei os resultados foram desastrosos. O Echium candicans não aprecia podas, sobretudo podas severas, chegando mesmo a morrer em consequencia disso (que o digam as ultimas duas plantas que podei). Assim, foi com algum receio que esta manhã me dediquei a tão potencialmente desastrosa tarefa. Acabei por optar por cortar apenas as astes florais que já estavam secas e não toquei no resto da planta. Vamos ver se desta vez a coisa corre sem sobressaltos. Façam figas...

I finally decided to do something I've been postponing for quite some time. To prune my Echium candicans (Pride of Madeira aka Pride of my garden). Not that pruning such a shrub is a particularly difficult task, but because the last two times I did it the consequences were a disaster. Pride of Madeira doesn't like to be pruned, specially hard pruned, and most of the times it will die after it (I should know, I killed two of them before realizing what I was doing). So this year I decided to prune the fading flowers only and hope for the best. I'm keeping my fingers crossed...

Depois de 4 enervantes semanas em que a única coisa que fez foi dar flores parece que finalmente o feijão verde de trepar se lembrou que tinha outra função na horta além de parecer bonito.

After 4 very annoying weeks where nothing else but blooming happened, the runner beans are finally growing their first pods.

Os meses de Julho e Agosto não são meses com grande abundância de flores (pelo menos neste meu jardim), pelo que o GBBD deste mês não é muito vistoso. Algumas repetições doutros meses, alguma flores de suculentas (que até essas este ano têm sofrido os efeitos do calor) e até mesmo na horta não se encontram muitas flores (por sorte frutos há com fartura).

In my garden you normally won't find many blooming plants during the hot summer months, most plants are in their summer rest, quietly waiting for the second spring (aka autumn) to come. So, don't expect to find lots of exotic luxurious blooms in this post, only a few blooms that you've seen in previous months, some succulent blooms and a few vegetable blooms.
