Tomates cherry, feijão verde, couves-flor minusculas (as grandes já foram colhidas) e o primeiro pepino.

*Para quem não leu os comentários do post de ontem, afinal de contas os escaravelhos que andavam nas couves são uma praga e como tal tiveram de ser eliminados.

*For those of you who red yesterdays post and not the comments, it turns out that the black and red beetles are a pest and needed to be exterminated.

É com agrado que vos digo que a "Operação ninho-de-amor" (ah pois, teve nome de código, o que é que estavam à espera?) foi um sucesso. A operação ocorreu às primeiras horas da manhã por forma a surpreender os criminosos ainda a dormir depois de horas de folguedo nocturno. Suspeita-se no entanto (e apesar do sucesso da dita operação) que possa ter havido fuga de informação, uma vez que o número de individuos era substancialmente menor do que em dias anteriores. A maior parte dos suspeitos foram capturados (para posteriores interrogatórios, aka estudar a melhor maneira de acabar com eles), mas muitos acabaram por ser abatidos no local enquanto tentavam a fuga.

I'm pleased to inform you that "Operation love-nest" (yeah, I had to give it a code name) was a huge success. The operation took place at the early hours of the morning, in order to surprise the criminals after a long night of "activity". There are suspicions however, (despite the huge success of the surprise operation) that there could have been a leak in the information, since the number of individuals were substantially smaller than that of previous days. Most of the suspects were captured (for further interrogations, aka study the best way to kill them), but many were killed in site while attempting to escape.

De salientar foi a actuação dos agentes infiltrados (nome de código "aranha") que iniciaram a captura de individuos suspeitos antes ainda da Operação "ninho-de-amor" ter início.

We would like to prize the work of infiltrated agents (code name "spider"), that began capturing suspects even before Operation "love-nest "started.

O "Motel das Couves" é mais uma vez um sitio seguro e livre de bandidagem. As autoridades competentes (aka "eu") asseguram que de agora em diante a vigilancia será muitos mais apertada e qualquer suspeito será capturado para interrogatórios (ou morto no local, conforme o que der mais jeito)

"Cabbage Motel" is once again a safe place, free of felons. Authorities (aka "me") would like to stress that from now on the surveillance will be implemented and each and every suspect will be captured for further interrogation of killed in the spot (which ever I feel like at the moment)

Sexo na horta... / Sex in the veg garden...

...mais especificamente nas couves. Por qualquer motivo as minhas couves foram eleitas como o motel da zona, e há literalmente um casal apaixonado em cada quarto, folha quero eu dizer.

...sex in the cabbage patch to be more exact. Seems that my cabbages were elected as the neighborhood motel for these beetles, and you can find a couple in love in every room...leaf , I mean.







E o motel deve ser dos melhores, porque vem com materninade e creche. Nas folhas das couves de bruxelas podemos encontrar grupos de ovos e juvenis.

And it must be a very good motel, since it comes with a kindergarten. You don't need to look very carefully to find lots of eggs and juveniles.





Como não faço ideia se são bons ou maus para a horta, e quando na duvida gosto de seguir a politica do "inocente até prova em contrário", lá os vou deixando entregues aos seus jogos de sedução e actividades libidinosas. De qualquer dos modos os afideos que infestavam as minhas couves têm vindo a desaparecer, por isso estou a desenvolver a teoria de que estes tipos são joaninhas disfarçadas e que nos intervalos dos seus jogos amorosos lá vão trincando um afideo ou outro (que isto já se sabe dá fome).

Since I have no idea if they are good or bad guys, and because I like to go by the rule of "innocent until proven guilty", I just leave them alone with their lust. Anyway, the aphids that were attacking my brussel sprouts seem to have diminished, so I'm working on the theory that these guys are ladybugs in disguise and that in the breaks in between their sex games they just munch on some aphids (we all now that this type of activity will make you hungry)

Novamente o calor/Heat damage again

Os dias de calor extremo parecem ter passado (embora tenha cá um palpite que ainda devem voltar), não sem no entanto terem deixado a sua marca. No geral o jardim continua com bom aspecto (durante este periodo aumentei as regas para duas regas semanais. Se as temperaturas continuarem "amenas" voltamos ao esquema de uma rega semanal) mas quando visto ao pormenor encontramos aqui e ali plantas danificadas pelo calor.

The extreme hot temperatures seem to have stopped for now (i still think they will come back), but not without leaving a mark in the garden. Overall the garden still looks nice (though I had to increase the amount of watering for the last two weeks), but if you look closely you will find heat damages here and there.

Algumas plantas como as Echinaceas apenas ficaram com as flores danificadas. Outras foram afectadas com maior gravidade.

Some plants like the Echinaceas only lost their flowers. In other cases the damage was a lot more serious.

Curiosamente foi entre as suculentas (normalmente mais resistentes a temperaturas altas e sol directo) que os piores estragos se verificaram. No caso dos Sempervivuns a situação foi dramatica com muitas plantas queimadas na sua quase totalidade.

Curiously enough the biggest damages happened in some of the succulent plants. Some of the Sempervivuns were dramatically affected as you can see in the picture above.

Também na horta houve danos. Uma das pereiras ficou com alguns ramos completamente queimados.

We've also had some damage in the vegetable garden. One of the pear trees was partially scorched by the hot sun.

As courgettes também perderam algumas das suas folhas mais jovens. Felizmente a produção de frutos não foi afectada.

Summer squash was also afected and lost some of its tender leaves. Luckily the fruit production doesn't seem to be affected.

Mas nem tudo são desgraças no jardim dos gatos e a prová-lo está esta Achillea que apesar do calor, apesar da seca floriu este ano pela primeira vez.

But to prove that not all is bad here at jardim com gatos this beautiful yarrow is blooming for its first time despite all the hot and dry weather.
