Continuo a trabalhar no jardim, desta vez ando a terminar os caminhos de gravilha em volta dos canteiros. Com o tempo (e muito trabalho) o jardim irá ficar todo coberto de gravilha. Além do aspecto estético (sempre achei os jardins com gravilha muito bonitos), a gravilha serve de cobertura dos canteiros, ajudando a diminuir o crescimento das ervas daninhas e a manter a humidade do solo. Sob a gravilha tenho colocado uma camada de folhas de jornal, que serve para, ainda mais , difiultar o crescimento das daninhas e manter a humidade do solo.

I'm still working in the garden, and at the moment I'm graveling the paths. With time (and a lot of work from me) the garden will be all covered in gravel. I've always liked gravel gardens but that was not the only thing that made me choose this type of garden. Gravel acts as mulch, making it more difficult for the weeds to grow and keeping the soil moist. I've been using a layer of newspaper under the gravel, which makes it more difficult for the weeds to grow, keeping the soil moisture.

Infelizmente o resto do jardim,ainda, está com este aspecto. Mas não por muito mais tempo, esperemos.

Unfortunately, the rest of the garden is, still, looking like this. Not for long I hope.

Suculentas em flor/Succulent blooms

As minhas Echeverias resolveram agradecer a mudança de vaso começando a florir. Algumas já têm flor, outras abrirão nos proximos dias, mas quase todas estão a produzir escapes florais.

My Echeverias are blooming. Some of them, like in the first two pictures, have flowers already, others will take a few more days, but almost all of them are producing flowers. I guess that is their way of thanking the new pots I put them in.



Os cactos recém descobertos também resolveram agradecer as novas condições de crescimento.

My cactus , after being repoted, are also growig well, and, some of them even rewarded me with flowers.

Novo projecto/New garden project

Encontrei estes barrotes de madeira no lixo, lá vão uns meses. Na altura trouxe-os para casa só porque me parecia um desperdicio deixá-los lá. Entretanto, como o acesso ao terreno de baixo era bastante mau lembrei-me que talvez pudesse fazer uns degraus com eles.
Depois de um dia inteiro de trabalho ficaram uns degraus bastante aceitaveis.
Entre os degraus plantei tomilhos, que daqui a algum tempo hão-de cobrir todo o espaço, criando um tapete verde.

I found these railway sleepers in the garbage a few months ago. I thought it was such a waste that I had to bring them home, later I would think on what to do with them. Since the access to the lower part of my property was very hard I thought I should use them to build a few steps. It took me almost one day of hard work but the final result looks very nice. I planted some thyme between the steps so that with time they will cover al the space between the sleepers.

O caracol/ Snail

Encontrei-o a passear na horta esta manhã. Achei-o tão bonito que não lhe consegui dar o mesmo fim que costumo dar a todos os caracois que por lá encontro (basta dizer que envolve a sola do sapato e o som de casca a quebrar).

I found this snail wondering around my vegetable garden this morning. I found it so beautiful that I couldn't give him the same tragical faith of hundreds of snails before him. (lets just say it involves my shoe and a sound of breaking shell)


Acabei por pegar nele e levá-lo para o soltar durante o meu passeio com os cães.
So I took him with me and released him during my morning walk with the dogs.



Era sem duvida o caracol mais bonito que já vi.
It was the most beautiful snail ever.

O meu jardim /My garden

Apercebi-me que raramente tenho publicado fotografias do meu jardim como um todo, apenas fotografias desta ou daquela planta.
Estas são algumas fotografias tiradas esta manhã.

I realized that I've rarelly posted pictures from my garden, just limiting myself to this or that plant. Here are a few pictures captured this morning.

Esta é uma graminea autoctone, que ando a experimentar no jardim.

O "relvado" de tomilho continua a crescer (muito) devagar. Acho que vou ter de plantar mais umas plantas.
The thyme lawn keeps on growing (very) slowly. Gess I will have to plant a few more plants.

Frutos de Verão /Summer fruits

Na horta as primeiras courgettes começam a formar-se.

The first summer squashes are starting to grow

E as groselhas começam a amadurecer.

And the redcurrants are starting to ripe.



As amoras também vão no bom caminho.

Blackberries are also growing.



E esta é a primeira flor das melancias.

And this is our first watermelon flower.


Parece que vamos ter bastante com que nos entreter no Verão.

Seems like we will be busy this Summer.
