O meu jardim /My garden

Apercebi-me que raramente tenho publicado fotografias do meu jardim como um todo, apenas fotografias desta ou daquela planta.
Estas são algumas fotografias tiradas esta manhã.

I realized that I've rarelly posted pictures from my garden, just limiting myself to this or that plant. Here are a few pictures captured this morning.

Esta é uma graminea autoctone, que ando a experimentar no jardim.

O "relvado" de tomilho continua a crescer (muito) devagar. Acho que vou ter de plantar mais umas plantas.
The thyme lawn keeps on growing (very) slowly. Gess I will have to plant a few more plants.

Frutos de Verão /Summer fruits

Na horta as primeiras courgettes começam a formar-se.

The first summer squashes are starting to grow

E as groselhas começam a amadurecer.

And the redcurrants are starting to ripe.



As amoras também vão no bom caminho.

Blackberries are also growing.



E esta é a primeira flor das melancias.

And this is our first watermelon flower.


Parece que vamos ter bastante com que nos entreter no Verão.

Seems like we will be busy this Summer.

Alperces /Apricots

Um dos dois alperces (uma fartura) que cresceram este ano na horta ficou maduro e capaz de ser comido. Delicioso!!

I harvested one of the two apricots that were growing in the vegetable garden. It was delicious!!

Iris "Blackout"

Depois de quase um ano de espera a iris "Blackout" que comprei o ano passado finalmente deu flor. A fotografia, na minha opinião, não lhe faz justiça, a flor é mais escura, quase negra. Quando a comprei foi-me dito que era uma iris alta, por isso a plantei na parte de trás do canteiro, atrás da Salvia leucantha. Infelizmente isso veio a mostrar-se falso, é uma iris de tamanho médio e fica completamente escondida atrás da salvia. Ou seja, terá de ser transplantada para outro sitio onde possa ser melhor apreciada nos proximos anos.

It took almost a year but finally iris "Blackout" bloomed. The photograph doesn't do it justice, since the flower is a lot darker, almost black. When I bought it, last year, I was told this was a tall iris, so I planted it in the back of the border, behind my Salvia leucantha. Well, as it turned out its a standard iris, and it gets completely hidden by the salvia. So now I have to find her another place in the garden where she can be seen and admired in the years to come.

As minhas cenouras/My carrots

Este é o canteiro onde foram semeadas as minhas cenouras. Gostava de vos poder dizer que já nasceram, cresceram e foram colhidas (e eram deliciosas!), ou que foram devoradas pelos pássaros, ou até que foram dizimadas por uma qualquer praga. Mas não...a verdade é que nem chegaram a nascer. Esta foi a minha quarta tentativa (com sementes diferentes), e mais uma vez nem uma cenoura para amostra. Será assim tão dificil cultivar cenouras? Existe algum segredo para se conseguir cultivar cenouras? Ou serei genéticamente incapaz de cultivar cenouras?

MAS POR QUE RAIO NÃO CONSIGO EU CULTIVAR CENOURAS?? (ok, admito estou a ficar um bocadinho paranoico com o assunto...)


This is where I sowed my carrots. I would love to tell you that they sprouted, grew and were harvasted by me (and that they were delicious!), or that some critter has munched on them, or even that they were killed by some weird disease. But no...in fact they never did sprout. This was my fourth atempt to grow carrots (with different seeds), and once again nothing sprouted.Is it so difficult to grow carrots? Is there any special secret to grow them that I should know? Or am I geneticaly incapable of growing carrots?

WHY THE HELL CAN'T I GROW CARROTS?? (Yes, I'm a bit paranoid about it...)

Liberdade!/Free at last!

Pois é verdade, tenho-me esquecido de lhe dizer que o Pascoal já é de novo um gato livre. Não perdeu grande peso, mas fez a dieta para diluição dos calculos urinários até ao fim. Esta manhã, para variar, esteve a dar-me uma "mãozinha" na horta.

I've been meaning to tell you that Pascoal is a free cat at last! He didn't get any slimer, but at least he finished his urinary diet. There he was, this mornig, giving me a hand in the vegetable garden
