Morangueiros / Strawberries

É agora a altura de plantar morangueiros. Este Domingo fui ao mercado e vim de lá com dois molhos de morangueiros e dois vasos de framboesas. Todos os anos planto novos morangueiros porque até agora nunca consegui que sobrevivam durante o Verão. Este ano tenciono mantê-los com uma camada de palha bastante espessa para ver se conseguem sobreviver ao calor e tempo seco.

Now is the right time to plant strawberries so I went to the market this weekend and came home with two bunches of strawberry plants to plant out in the vegetable garden. Strawberries seem to die on my vegetable garden every summer, so every autumn I need to plant new ones. This year I plan to mulch them really well to see if they can survive the dry hot summer weather.

Não consegui encontrar framboesas amarelas (que na minha opinião são mais saborosas que as vermelhas) por isso acabei por trazer duas vermelhas. Numa próxima oportunidade quero ver se consigo comprar duas amarelas para substituir as que tinha e que, inexplicavelmente, morreram o inverno passado.

I also bought two raspberry bushes to replace the ones I had (they died last winter for no good reason). Unfortunately I didn't find any yellow raspberries (they are tastier than the red ones in my opinion) so end up with two red ones. Maybe next time I'll manage to find yellow ones.

Depois de arrancadas as ervas a terra foi enriquecida com estrume e composto, plantaram-se os morangos e as framboesas, regou-se e cobriu-se tudo com palha. Agora é esperar que comecem a crescer e que na primavera nos dêem muitos e bons morangos.

The bed was cleaned of weeds and filled with manure and compost (we want them to have a good start). Then once the plants were on the ground I watered the and mulched heavily. Now, if all goes well, I just need to wait and in a moth or two they should start to bloom.

Melhorar o solo / Mulch and fertilizer, two steps for a better soil

Desde que comecei a horta um dos meus maiores problemas tem sido o solo. Pesado e com pouca matéria orgânica é muito difícil de trabalhar, seca com facilidade no verão e não é tão fértil como eu gostaria. O adubos comerciais podem parecer uma boa solução para aumentar a fertilidade, mas na verdade pouco mais fazem do que promover o crescimento das plantas sem trazer nada de bom ao solo. Daí que este ano, à semelhança do que já fiz no passado tenha decidido voltar a cobrir o solo com palha. A palha tem várias vantagens, protege o solo e os seus habitantes (que de bom grado degradam a matéria orgânica e a transformam em nutrientes facilmente assimiláveis pelas plantas), evita que a terra seque tão depressa e como passar do tempo vai-se decompondo e servindo como fonte adicional de matéria orgânica. A matéria organica melhora a qualidade do solo porque além de forner nutirntes melhora a textura do solo tornando-o mais arejado e solto (logo facilitando a penetração das raizes) e ajuda a conservar a humidade.

I've been reading "The Organic Way to Mulching" which, obviously, made think about mulching. Mulching is important in the vegetable garden because it protects the soil and with time it helps improving it. Mulch keeps the tiny soil creatures protected from sun and desiccation, so that they are free to do their job. With time mulch (if organic) will decompose and be incorporated in the soil improving it. Mulch also helps to keep the soil moist and diminishes the need to water your garden. So I decided to mulch my vegetable garden with straw. The straw will decompose and turn into organic matter that will much improve the soil. Organic matter makes the soil looser, aerated facilitating root growth.

Além da palha, este ano arranjei estrume de cavalo já compostado que adicionei a todas as camas. Embora já se note a diferença entre o solo das camas e o solo não trabalhado que as rodeia ainda lhe falta muita materia organica (apesar do composto e estrume). Outra experiencia que fiz este ano foi a de enterrar directamente numa das camas os restos da cozinha que deveriam ir para o compostor. Deste modo, acho eu, serãodirectamente compostados e integrados no solo. Essa cama só será plantada na primavera de modo a que o processo de compostagem se complete.

Added to the straw mulch I also mixed horse manure in every bed. The manure was already well composted so I could use it right away. This will increase the amount of organic matter in the soil, which is one of my main goals since the biggest problem of my soil is lack of organic matter. I aslo tried something new (as an experiment in one of the beds) which is to bury all the vegetable matter that would be tossed in the compost bin. This way it will decompose directly in the soil and be immediately incorporated. We shall see how it works.

As beterrabas são neste momento um dos meus legumes preferidos (o que é incrível se pensarmos que antes de as começar a cultivar as detestava). São dos poucos que são comestíveis na sua totalidade e tanto as folhas como a raiz são deliciosas. Se nunca comeram a rama das beterrabas experimentem, o sabor é muito semelhante ao dos espinafres e pode ser usado em sua substituição.
E se tal como eu acham que não gostam de beterraba experimentem cultivá-las na horta, e assá-las no forno com azeite e alho...deliciosas! Nada que ver com aquelas que se compram por aí...

Beets are at the moment one of my favorite vegetable, which is pretty amazing if you consider I hated them before I started growing them myself. I like its earthy flavor, its colors and most of all the fact that you can eat both roots and leafs. If you are one of those that throws beet leafs into the compost bin, next time think twice. Beet leafs are as tasty as spinach and can be used in every dish where you would normaly use them.

And if, like me , you think you don't like beets, give them a second chance. Grow a few in your vegetable garden and once they are ready roast them with olive oil and garlic...delicious!

A horta no Outono/ Autumn vegetable garden

Esta manhã com o arranque das últimos tomateiros acabaram definitivamente as culturas de verão. Embora a temperatura amena ainda as mantivesse vivas os tomates tardavam muito em amadurecer e acabavam roídos pelos caracóis (além disso tenho congelados tomates suficientes para cozinhar durante uns bons meses). Apesar de tudo ainda há muito que ver, e que colher na horta.

I pulled the last tomato plants this morning. The weather is not cold enough to kill them but the tomatoes were taking forever to ripe and the snails were eating them (plus I have a freezer full of tomatoes. They will be more than enough to cook until next season). Still there is plenty growing in the veg garden.

As couves lombardas estão finalmente a formar cabeça e a ficar boas para colher. Usamos uma na sopa e são bastante mais saborosas que as que se compram por aí.

Savoy cabbages are getting big enough for harvesting. We made soup out of one yesterday and they taste good, really good, much better then store bought ones.

Também já comecei a apanhar os nabos apesar de pequenos. Estavam a ser atacados pelo pulgão e pelos caracóis e decidi que mais valem nabos pequenos que nabos nenhuns.

Turnips are still on the small side but I decided to harvest them too. Snails were starting to munch on them and aphids were attacking its leafs.

Os espinafres também já estão com tamanho para serem apanhados. Da horta seguem directamente para a cozinha ou para o congelador.

Lots of spinach is being harvested too. I've been cooking some and freezing the remaining ones.

Ainda temos algumas alfaces plantadas no final do verão. Na estufa já crescem novas plantinhas para as substituir.

These are some of the lettuces planted in late summer. They are ready to pick too, and I have plenty new plants growing in the greenhouse, almost ready to plant out.

As rutabagas estão enormes. São tão bons exemplares que estou a ponderar deixá-las para semente (já há mais a crescer na estufa, à espera do transplante)

Swedes are big and beautiful. in fact I'm thinking of keeping these for seed harvest just because they are so big. Plus I have sown another batch.

As couves de bruxelas já começam a despontar. Suponho que daqui a umas semanas já posso começar a apanhá-las.

Brussel sprouts are starting to grow. I expect to start harvesting them in a few weeks.

Esta é um mistério, foi plantada como sendo uma couve Romanesco, mas não o é, tb não é um bróculo normal, suponho que seja um híbrido qualquer. De qualquer modo está pronta acolher e não deve passasr de amanhã.

And this, this is a mistery to me. It was suposed to be a Romanesco but it looks nothing like it, it also doesn't look like a regular broccoli, so I imagine it to be some hybrid. Either way it will be harvested and eaten pretty soon.

Os alhos, cebolas e alhos franceses também já foram plantados e crescem a bom ritmo. Também já semeados as favas, ervilhas e grão de bico preto continuam sem dar sinal de vida.

I also have garlic, onions and leeks growing on full speed. I've sown broad beans, peas and garbanzos but nothing has sprouted yet.

O tempo voa, já passou mais de uma semana e ainda não tive tempo de falar sobre o encontro promovido pela Colher para Semear. Infelizmente não fui grande repórter fotográfico, passei mais tempo a conversar do que a fotografar e acabei por trazer apenas uma fotografia utilizável.

As I told you in my last post I went to a "Seedy weekend" (for lack of better translation) a week ago. This was a very interesting reunion of people interested in preserving heirloom vegetable and fruits. I wasn't much of a photographer that day, I spent more time talking to people than photographing and ended up with only one good picture.

O primeiro dia foi ocupado com apresentações de onde saliento uma sobre produção de vinho em regime biológico e, a melhor e mais importante para mim, a apresentação sobre o levantamento das variedades tradicionais algarvias.

On saturday we had a few lectures, some more interesting then others, the two more interesting ones being one on organic wine production and another one on traditional varieties of fruit and vegetables still found in the Algarve.

O segundo dia foi dia de oficinas e troca de sementes. Das oficinas salientou-se a oficina sobre colheita e conservação de sementes. E daí passei para a troca de sementes....ahhh a troca de sementes....por onde começar? Era incrível a quantidade de sementes para troca e , sendo eu um colecionador compulsivo de sementes, tive grande dificuldade em escolher o que trazer.
Acabei por vir com uma boa colecção de novas variedades, Tomate rosa (a unica variedade algarvia que consegui encontrar), Ervilha de olho preto de S. Miguel (uma variedade açoriana de grande produtividade e que tanto pode ser consumida fresca como seca), Abóbora menina pequena, Couve galega de folha lisa, Chicharos, Feijão frade, Pastinacas, Abóbora Potimarron , Feijão Pinta leonesa (uma variedade espanhola), Abóbora Rouge vif d'etampes, Beringela rosada (acho q deve ser Rosa bianca), Feijão mungo preto, Rábano negro e Feijão francês rasteiro .

The second day was workshop and seed swap day. I atended a very interesting workshop on how to harvest and preserve seeds and then went into the seed swap. Ahhhh the seed swap....I felt like a little boy in a candy store...I didn't know which side to turn. There were so many interesting varieties that i had a very difficult time choosing which ones to bring home. I ended up bringing quite a colection of new vegetable seeds home. Tomate rosa (translated as pink tomato. the only algarvian variety I could find), Ervilha de olho preto de S. Miguel (a pea from the Azores), Abóbora menina pequena ( a portuguese winter squash), Couve galega de folha lisa (portuguese kale), Chicharos (I can't translate this...they are a sort of square peas), Blackeyed peas, Parsnip, Potimarron winter squash , Pinta leonesa bean ( a spanish variety), Rouge vif d'etampes pumpkin , Rosa bianca aubergine, Black mung bean, Black spanish radish and a beautiful french bean .

Pesava mais de 10kg, e apesar da cor pouco habitual, é talvez a melhor melancia que já comi. A melancia Orangeglo foi uma agradavel surpresa. As sementes já estão a secar...para o ano há mais.

This was the biggest and tastier watermelon I've ever grown. Orangeglo was a pleasent surprise and I will grow it again next year.

Tempo de romãs / Pomegranate season

É outra vez tempo de colher as romãs, antes que elas comecem a rachar e seja impossível conservá-las. Ainda assim já é tarde para algumas. As que estavam em pior estado foram para as galinhas, as outras foram descascadas e comidas de seguida ou congeladas para mais tarde fazer compota.

Its pomegranate season again. This year I managed to harvest most of them before they crack open. Nonetheless a few of them were already open. A few of those went into the chicken pen (the girls LOVE pomegranate) and I've peeled the others and froze them. They will be turned into jam.

Aprendi recentemente um truque fantástico para descascar romãs. Cortam-se ao meio e com uma colher de pau bate-se na casca. Os bagos, e algum sumo, soltam-se com facilidade e caem numa tigela. Depois é só comer.

I've recently learned a neat trick to peel pomegranates. Just cut them in half and use a woden spon to hit the back of each half. The red grains and juice should come out very easily.

Enquanto na horta as plantinhas recém plantadas crescem com alguma dificuldade, por culpa deste calor que teima em não ir embora, a coberto da sombra do alpendre muitas outras crescem à espera do dia em que, finalmente, serão plantadas. Desde que comecei com a horta sempre tive duvidas sobre qual o melhor método para semear, se por sementeira direta se semeando em módulos e mais tarde transplantando. Algumas espécies, segundo a literatura devem ser semeadas por sementeira direta e não em módulos (o caso das beterrabas, por exemplo) no entanto desde sempre o sucesso da sementeira direta (na minha horta) é francamente reduzido (excetuam-se as leguminosas como as favas, ervilhas e feijões) pelo que agora opto por semear em módulos e mais tarde transplantar.

While the recently planted cabbages are fighting for their lifes in the vegetable garden, lots of other plants are growing happily under the porch save from the high temperatures and the strong direct sun light. I've always had my doubt to what would be the best way to start the seeds, if by direct sowing in the garden or by sowing them in sowing trays. The first seemed to be the easiest, the more natural way, and the one recomended for many vegetables. The second, much more labor intensive, and not recomended for a few seeds like carrots, beets, turnips (at least if we were to trust everything we read). Nonetheless direct sowing has never worked for me (apart from the legume family) so now I always start the seeds in sowing trays.

Normalmente em cada módulo são semeadas varias sementes que depois de germinadas são escolhidas mantendo-se apenas a mais vigorosa. Este ano no entanto optei por fazer as coisas de modo diferente. depois de germinadas deixo as plantas crescer um pouco e depois separo-as e planto cada uma no seu módulo. Desta forma, embora tenha mais trabalho, acabo por rentabilizar mais as sementes e tenho muito mais plantas para levar para a horta. Comecei por fazê-lo com plantas "fáceis" como as alfaces e as couves, mas agora resolvi experimentar com beterrabas e espinafres e nabos. Até agora parecem estar a reagir muito bem ao transplante.

I do it a bit differently then usual now. Yes I sow a few seeds in the same module, yes I watch them grow until its time to transplant. What I dont do is the usual thinning of the seedlings, instead I divide them and plant them individually and wait until they are big enough to plant them out in the garden. This way I get much more plants and I'm not wasting any seeds (yes I admit, I hate wasting seeds!). This has worked with the toughest plants like cabbages as well as with beets or turnips.

E de repente as temperaturas subiram novamente. Tão repentinamente que num só dia as couves romanesco que plantei no outro dia ficaram completamente murchas. Algumas ficaram completamente esturricadas. Para essas já fui tarde, mas para as outras tive de construir uma proteção contra o sol. Assim, protegidas do sol do meio dia e com duas regas diárias talvez ainda consigam recuperar.

After a few perfect days of milder temperatures the heat is back. The rise in the temperatures caught me by surprise and I didn't protect in any way the recently planted cabbages. This resulted in a few scorched plants. Yesterday I used a some mosquito net to shelter them from the sun and strated watering more often. A few of the plants are lost but most of them seem to be improving.

Na horta ainda há muita coisa para colher antes que chegue o tempo frio, mas já estou a aproveitar os dias mais frescos que têm feito ultimamente para plantar algumas das hortícolas que irão crescer durante o tempo frio.

Even if there is still lots growing in the veg garden I'm already starting to plant the vegetables that I will harvest during the Fall/Winter season. The temperature has been considerably lower so I'm taking advantage of these cooler days to plant out all the seedlings I started growing a few weeks ago.

Estes repolhos foram já plantados há cerca de duas semanas (impressionante o salto que deram desde que os passei para a terra!) Ontem plantei alfaces nos intervalos entre eles. A ideia é que as alfaces crescem mais depressa que os repolhos e estarão prontas para apanhar antes que comecem a ficar demasiado apertados. Desta forma não se desperdiça espaço e dificulta-se o crescimento das daninhas (que dia-se de passagem já começam a aparecer)

I planted these "Milano cabbages about two weeks ago (amazing how fast they are growing), and yesterday I planted lettuces in between them. They will grow faster than the cabbages, so by the time the cabbages are need more space they will be harvested. This way I'm using every inch possible and making it a bit more difficult for the weeds to grow (or at least I hope)

Aqui o mesmo sistema mas com couve "Romanesco". Quando as couves estiverem grandes já as alfaces terão sido colhidas.

Esta manhã entretive-me a plantar nabos. Esta variedade chama-se "Nabo 60 dias" o que quer dizer q levam cerca de 8 semanas a ficarem prontos. Nessa altura serão substituídos por favas .

Turnips, planted out this morning. These are "60 days turnips" meaning they will be ready for harvest in 8 weeks. I' will then replace them with broad beans.

Couves de Bruxelas e Romanesco. Aqui ainda não plantei alfaces porque prefiro plantar as alfaces ao entardecer. Normalmente quando transplantadas de manhã não aguentam o sol do dia (a não ser em dias frescos ou chuvosos)

I also planted some Brussel sprouts and more Romanesco cabbage. No lettuces in between because I like to plant lettuces in the evening. If planted in the morning most of the times they will not survive the strong sun and high temperature during the day (unless in cloudy or rainy days)

Rutabagas intercaladas com mangericão. O ano passado experimentei plantar mangericão nesta altura e tive bastante sucesso, por isso esta ano repeti. As rutabagas são uma novidade.

An finally swedes and basil. This seems to be a bit late for basil, but last year I also sowed it in August and managed to have a second harvest of it.I'm planting swedes for the first time this year.

Esta é a época em que temos de começar a planear a horta para o Outono/Inverno. Desde o inicio do mês que comecei as sementeiras. A crescer neste momento tenho alfaces, alho francês, cebola branca, couve tronchuda, nabos, couve de Bruxelas e beterrabas.

This is the time when we need to start planning our Autumn/Winter vegetable garden. And so I am. I've started sowing 2 weeks ago and now have lots of small plants almost ready to be planted out. In the picture we can see, lettuce, beets, portuguese cabbage, brussel sprouts, turnips, leeks and onions

Este ano está a se excecionalmente bom em matéria de produção de ovos. As miúdas andam aplicadíssimas e não passa um dia sem que pelo menos recolha um ovo. Não sei se será por terem um rapaz a quem impressionar, mas o que é certo é que mesmo as Sureñas que em outros anos deixavam de por em Agosto reiniciaram a postura depois de um breve intervalo.

The girls are working hard this year. Not one day goes by without an egg in the nest box. Maybe they are trying to impress the new rooster, but what I can tell you is that in previous years they would stop laying around the beguining of August and this year, after a breaf interval they started laying again.

As duas que estiveram a chocar (com fracos resultados diga-se....apenas um pinto que morreu pouco depois de nascer), ao contrario do que eu esperava, reiniciaram as postura e são as mais assíduas visitantes dos ninhos.

Even the two girls that got broody and spent 23 days sitting on eggs have now restarted laying and are the two most productive of the bunch.

Não tenho a certeza se as duas frangas já iniciaram a postura embora estejam as duas com uma crista enorme e bem vermelha (sinal de que ou estão a pôr ou quase a pôr) Aparecem alguns ovos castanhos e pequenos, por isso alguma delas deve estar a pôr, mas ainda não vi nenhuma nos ninhos.

The two yongest have devoloped a nice big red crest meaning that they are laying or about to lay, and since I've been finding a few smaler eggs I'm guessing they have started working on egg production too.

Estou muito satisfeito com as novas galinhas, são muito mais calmas que as mais velhas e não entram em panico cada vez que entro no galinheiro. O galo então é tão calmo e manso que quase me deixa tocar-lhe. O único aspeto negativo é que os ovos são mais pequenos que os das Sureñas, mas as galinhas também têm um porte bastante menor.

I'm really happy with the new chickens, they are much calmer then the old girls and don´t run around like crazy when I get inside the pen. Zebedeu, the rooster, is extremely tame and almost (yes, almost) alows me to stroke his head. On the down side the eggs are smaller then the ones the older girls lay, but they are a smaller breed too.

As ervilhas são tradiconalmente uma cultura de tempo frio. Segundo o que tenho lido "não toleram o tempo quente". Não foi o que aconteceu este ano na horta. Nasceram-me algumas "Capucijner" que, ao contrario do que esperava, cresceram, floriram e deram vagens. Não cresceram tanto quanto costumam (ficaram-se por uns modestos 20-30 cm, quando normalmente passam de 1 metro) nem deram tantas vagens como seria de esperar mas não deixa de ser curioso ver ervilhas a crescer em pleno Agosto.

Peas are traditionaly a cold weather culture. Gardening books even say "peas won't stand high temperatures". So when I first saw these "Capucijner" sprouting I wondered if they would grow to see the next day. They did. Not only that but they also bloomed and are growing a few purple pods. They are not quite as tall as they should be (just about 20cm, when they should be more than 1 meter) nor quite as productive but is funny to see them growing during our hot August days.

Uma coisa que todos os anos me surpreende nos melões é a capacidade de aparecerem de um dia para o outro. Um dia não está lá nada, por mais que se procure, e no dia seguinte, ao arrancar uma erva, lá está ele já crescidinho.

One thing that is always surprising when growing melons is their ability to grow fruits overnight. One day there were none (well, you've spent half hour looking for them and you didn't find them, so they couldn't be there) and the next day, while weeding, you find half a dozen of them.

That was exactly what happened this morning.

Com as melancias passa-se mais ou menos o mesmo, mas estas são ainda mais manhosas. Chegam a criar pequenos frutos, que dias depois abortam, só para nos distrair. Enquanto isso, escondidas pelas folhas crescem os outros frutos, os que nos vão surpreender quando os encontrarmos por acaso ao arrancar as ervas.

Watermelons are even sneakier. They will do everything to confuse you. The female flowers are very difficult to find and most of the time when you find them they are growing tiny fruits that will invariably die in a few days (leaving you heartbroken). Meanwhile underneath the leafs they will grow one or more fruits so they can surprise you one morning with an almost mature size fruit.

Hoje foi dia de aplicar calda bordalesa. Apliquei apenas no melão "Pele de sapo" porque é o único a mostrar sinais de oídio. O motivo é, imagino, o excesso de rega. Não foi uma ideia brilhante plantar os melões junto com alfaces. As alfaces precisam de muito mais água e o resultado está à vista

For the record, it's not a good idea to plant lettuces and melons together. Lettuce needs a all lot more water than melon and with time and the right temperature oidium is bound to happen. At least that was the case with my "Toad skin melons".

Apanhei as alfaces, reduzi as regas e notaram-se melhorias , mas não suficientes e hoje acabei por não esperar mais e sulfatei as plantas. Espero que o tratamento tenha sido feito a tempo e que os frutos que neste momento já crescem não se venham a perder.

I got rid of the lettuces ( as in picked them and ate them in a salad) and diminished the amount of watering but I was too late. The plants improved, but not enough, so today I had to use Bordeaux mixture to treat them. After all I don't want to loose the melons that are already growing on the vines.

Todos os outros melões, plantados com o feijão de trepar e com regas bastante mais reduzidas estão saudáveis e sem sinal de oídio. Optei por não os sulfatar, embora tenha ficado a pensar que se calhar não teria sido má ideia um tratamento a titulo preventivo.

All the other melons, growing with pole beans and receiving much less water look fine and healthy so I didn't treat them. Maybe I should have, as profilaxis? We will see...

As curcubitaceas estão finalmente a começar a produzir frutos. Com sorte consigo comer melão e melancia antes do Inverno. Já se vêem frutos a crescer no melão "Pele de sapo", melão "Opal Kugel", melão "D'Algers", melancia "Verde escura" e abóbora "Butternut"

Curcubits are starting to set fruit. We can see tiny fruits on "Toad skin" melon, "Opal Kugel" melon, "D'Algers" melon, "Dark green" watermelon and "Butternut" squash.

Nunca sei ao certo quanto tempo levam a amadurecer, mas penso que é cerca de 80-90 dias, o que significa que devem estar maduros só lá para o final de Setembro. Felizmente o Verão aqui dura até meio de Outubro, caso contrário esta sementeira tão tardia seria em vão.

Will they ripe in time? I'm never sure of how long do they take to ripe, but I'm thinking it should be aroud 80-90 days, meaning they wont be ripe before October. Good thing we have long summers , otherwhise this would be a lost crop

Encontrei-o hoje enquanto cortava alguns ramos do damasqueiro. Sabia que existiam por aqui, mas nunca tinha visto nenhum. É um animal impressionante. Pena que seja uma especie ameaçada.

Found him today on the apricot tree. I knew we could find chameleons around here but had never actually seen any. They are such wonderful creatures. Its a pitty they are endangered.

Na realidade não é uma mas sim oito. Oito belas peras a crescer na pereira. Este foi sem dúvida um bom ano para as árvores de fruto. Tive uma bela colheita de nectarinas e ameixas e até a pereira está com frutos (pela segunda vez em 6 anos). Parece que o truque com as pereiras é ameaçá-las. Sempre que me decidi a arrancá-las porque só me estão a ocupar espaço elas decidem dar fruto. E ganham mais um ano de vida....

Once again (for the second time in 6 years) we have pears growing on the pear tree. You know it was a good year for fruit trees when my pear tree is bearing fruit. I guess the trick with pear trees is to threaten them. Every time I decide to pull them out because they are just a waste of space they decide to grow some fruit...and get to live another year...

Este foi um ano muito bom e muito mau para as miúdas. Por um lado construí um galinheiro bastante maior que o antigo passando as galinhas a dispor de perto de 40m2 para passear (em vez dos 12m2 de que dispunham anteriormente), mas por outro lado perdemos uma das miúdas. A Lola, bastante aventureira mas pouco esperta resolveu evadir-se e passear na horta. Isto aconteceu quando não havia ninguém por perto, e a pobre acabou por cair na boca dos cães.

Good things and bad things happened in the hen house this past few months. The pen was rebuilt and enlarged, meaning that the girls have 3 times more space then they used to have to walk around, but on the other end we lost one of the girls, Lola decides to escape from the pen and ended up neing caught by the dogs.

Para compensar a perda de uma das miúdas acabei por comprar mais 3, que trouxeram a reboque um garboso rapaz. Assim agora, além das 3 "Sureñas" originais temos um casal de "Preta lusitanica" e duas "Pedrês", ambas raças nacionais e ameaçadas.

So, to make up for Lola's death we decided to buy a few more girls. Only this time a boy came with them. This time I managed to find portuguese breeds, "Preta Lusitanica" and "Pedrês".

Vamos então às apresentações, as Pretas Lusitanicas são o Zebedeu e a Zulmira, e as Pedrêses a Floripes e a Florinda. São raças mais pequenas que a Sureña e isso nota-se bem no tamanho dos ovos, mas por outro lado são muito mais calmas e menos medrosas.
O plano é tentar criar "Preta Lusitanica", embora este ano a coisa não tenha corrido bem. De 12 ovos apenas um chocou mas o pinto morreu em poucas horas. Esperemos que a coisa corra melhor para o ano que vem.

Também pela primeira vez tive animais doentes. Duas das galinhas desenvolveram pneumonia e tive de as trazer para dentro de casa para as poder medicar (sim, porque apanhar uma galinha duas vezes por dia para lhe enfiar antibiótico bico abaixo, é tarefa quase impossível se ela estiver solta no galinheiro). Felizmente correu tudo pelo melhor e ao fim de uma semana de antibiótico puderam regressar ao conforto do galinheiro.

So, lets meet the new guys, shall we? The first ones are Zebedeu and Zulmira, a couple of "Preta Lusitanica" and the other two girls are Floripes and Florinda two young females of "Pedrês". Both are rare and endangered breeds and I have plans start breeding "Preta lusitanica". The first attempt didn't go too well, as only one egg hatched and the chick died within a few hours. Next time it will be better, I hope.

A horta está atrasadíssima, mais uma vez comecei as sementeiras muito tarde, no inicio de Junho, o que quer dizer que levo uns bons dois meses de atraso. Vamos então ver o que está a crescer na horta.

Once again I started my sowings very late, around June, meaning that every thing is about two months late in its development. Shall we go for a walk? I'll show you whats growing in my vegetable garden this year.

Tomates. Estes são da variedade "Maravilha dos mercados" (conseguidos através da "Colher para Semear")e são os que vão mais adiantados, já começam a dar fruto. Além destes tenho "Joia de Oxaca", "Orange Queen" e "Cherokee purple" (oferta do amigo António do A Horta d'avó)

We will start with the tomatoes. The ones on the pictures are "Maravilha dos Mercados" a portuguese heirloom. Also growing we have "Oxacan Jewel", "Orange Queen" and "Cherokee Purple"

Soja. É a segunda vez que semeio soja, embora desta vez tenha semeado um pouco mais tarde espero obter bons resultados. O terreno este ano foi enriquecido com composto (ao contrario do ano passado em que as plantas cresceram muito pouco), pelo que espero obter melhores resultados que no ano passado.

Soy beans. I realy can remember the name of this cultivar but I'm trying it for the second time. Last year it received too little water and no compost on the soil but it still grew. This year hopefully things will go better since I've added a good amount of compost to the soil and am being very carefull with the watering.

Feijão. São cinco as variedades de feijão que tenho a crescer na horta, "Papo de rola", "Feijão riscado", "Feijão branco de trepar", "Royalty purple" e "Dog Bean".

Beans. I have five diferent types of beans growing "Papo de rola", "Feijão riscado", "Feijão branco de trepar", "Royalty purple" e "Dog Bean" (the first three are Portuguese heirlooms)

Abóbora. Estas são, mais uma vez da variedade "Butternut", que sempre me tem dado muito bons resultados. Infelizmente também estão um pouco atrasadas e só agora começam a formar botões.

Winter squash. Once again "Butternut" , one of my favorites. They are only now starting to bloom, I hope they will have time to ripe.

Pimentos. Com estes confesso que fiz batota e comprei as plantas já crescidinhas. Nunca me dei muito bem com a sementeira de pimentos e este ano resolvi jogar pelo seguro.

Peppers. Ok, I'll admit, I cheated with these ones...I bought already grown plants. I was never too lucky with sowing peppers so this year I just didn't bother.

Melancia. Destas há duas variedades, a "Verde escura" ("Colher para Semear") e a "Orangeglo". Esta ultima parece ser de crescimento muito lento e está muito mais atrasada que a "Verde escura" Só espero que tenha tempo de frutificar e amadurecer, estou com mta curiosidade em experimentá-la.

Watermelon. 2 types, "Verde escura", a Portuguese heirloom, and "Orangeglo" This last one is really a slow grower, so I'm fearing I might not taste them this year.

Acelgas. A planta que se vê na foto já tem pelo menos 2 anos e continua a crescer. Este ano semeei mais umas para lhe fazerem companhia.

Swiss chard. I have one swiss chard plant that keeps on growing for the past 2 years and I sowed a few more.

Melões. Na fotografia vê-se a variedade "Meloa Amarela", mas também tenho semeados "Melão banana", "Melão D'Algers", "Old Time Tennessee", "Luneville" "Ha Hogen" "Opal Kugel" e "Gurbek".

Também tenho semeadas á espera de serem transplantadas, alfaces, beterrabas, couves, e espinafres.

Viva! Já por cá não passava há uma eternidade...Por motivos vários entre os quais se incluem a preguiça e a falta de tempo já não publicava nada há quase um ano. Para quem tem comentado peço desculpa por não ter respondido mas só hoje li os vossos comentário. Nem sei que vos diga, fiquei muito contente por ver que sentiram que minha falta.

A gaiola resultou! / Brassica cage success!

A gaiola que construí para proteger os broculos foi um sucesso. As plantas não foram nem tocadas pelas lagartas da couve (ao contrario dos nabos que viram a sua rama ser reduzida a nada de um dia para o outro) e já começam a aparece as primeiras flores. Esta na fotografia é a maior, embora ainda seja pequena para apanhar....já não falta muito.

Seems that building the brassica cage payed of! The brocolli are huge and untouched by white cabbage moth caterpillar. They are now starting to grow their first florets (is that what we call them?)- The one in the picture is the biggest one, but its still a few weeks away from being ready to pick, I think.

Depois das chuvas dos ultimos tempos, já germinaram as favas "do Algarve". Estas só devem começar a florir lá para Fevereiro e devem poder ser colhidas em Março.

With all the rain we've been having the other broad beans that I've sowed ("do Algarve") are now sprouting. I expect them to start blooming around February. We could start picking them around March, I think.

Entretanto as "Luz de Outono" continuam cheias de flores e com bastantes vagens a crescer. Depois de alguns anos de insucesso com a variedade "Acuadulce" estas duas parecem ser a melhor escolha na minha horta. Este vai ser, ao que parece, um bom ano para as favas no jardim com gatos.

Meanwhile the "Luz de Outono" brad beans keep on growing, and blooming. The oldest plants are covered with flowers and pods. These two varieties seem to be the best choice for my garden. Before them I tried "Aquadulce" for 2 years, always with very little success.

Ainda cheias de flores, as ervilheiras já têm muitas vagens a crescer. Vai ser o primeiro ano em que as vou experimentar, as "capucijner" (uma variedade holandesa). Tradicionalmente são usadas secas, mas acho que as vou experimentar em fresco.

Apresento-vos a mais recente artista do jardim com gatos. A Serafina! Apareceu-me há coisa de uma semana, cheia de fome. Não tive coragem de lhe voltar as costas e lá a trouxe para casa. Bem recebida pelos cães (a Maria Antonia já é a melhor amiga e protectora), está a ter mais problemas com os gatos. O Zé tolera-a mas não lhe dá muita confiança, o Pascual foge dela como o diabo da cruz (é de rir ver um gato tão grande a bufar, rosnar e fugir com medo de uma coisa tão pequena)

Meet Serafina, the latest crew member here at jardim com gatos. She followed me to my car about a week ago and I just couldn't say no to these beautiful eyes. She was readily accepted by the dogs (she's best friends with Maria Antonia that plays with her and defends her from the others) but the cats weren't too happy with the newcomer.

Comi este fim de semana as primeiras favas. São bastante mais pequenas que as da variedade "do Algarve" que semeei para colher na primavera, mas ainda assim bastante saborosas. Compensou tê-las semeado em Agosto. Vou ter favas todo o inverno.

This weekend I picked and hate the first broad beans of the season. This variety has smaller pods and smaller broad beans but very tasty nonetheless. I'm glad I sowed them this year, it means I will be eating fresh broad beans all winter long.

Tivemos hoje no jardim dos gatos uma visita fora do comum. Para quem não saiba o que é, trata-se de um grifo ou abutre-fouveiro.

We had a very uncommon visitor today. A juvenile Griffon vulture.

Estava pousado no telhado de manhã cedo e lá ficou, indiferente ao ladrar dos cães, durante umas duas horas, até que se cansou de os ouvir e levantou voo.

I guess he spent the night on top of my roof, since he was already there when we came out at 6.30am. And there he stayed for at least two more hours. He didn't seem at all disturbed by my presence or by the dogs that were barking frantically.

É provavelmente a minha ave de rapina favorita e, embora soubesse que podem surgir por estas paragens, nunca tinha visto nenhum. Devem imaginar a sensação que foi sair de casa e dar de caras com ele.

This is probably my favorite bird of prey, but I had never seen a wild one. You can only imagine what I felt when I found him this morning. It's such a magnificent creature!

Não tenho a certeza mas acho que se deve tratar de um juvenil qua andava perdido e parou para descansar. Mesmo juvenil não deixa de ser um animal magnifico.

I'm not sure, but it looks like a juvenile, and I can only guess he was lost and tired so he decided to rest a bit on top of my roof.

À terceira é de vez / Third time is the charm

Desde há 3 anos que todos os anos experimento semear cenouras. Sempre sem sucesso. Nem sequer germinam. Este ano resolvi experimentar uma ultima vez. Usei a tecnica da serapilheira que vi num outro blog. Consiste em semear e cobrir com serapilheira de forma a manter a humidade e evitar o crescimento das daninhas. O resultado não foi fantastico mas ainda assim bastante melhor que nos outros anos. A taxa de germinação foi relativamente baixa mas ainda assim tenho cenouras a crescer.

Ever since I first started my vegetable garden, 3 years ago, I've tried to grow carrots. Always without success . I just couldn't understand why, but I wasn't going to give up on them. This year I tried once again. I used the burlap technique Which I red about in another blog. You just sow the seeds and cover them with burlap. This will help to keep the moisture and prevent weed growth.
The result, though far from great, was a lot better then before, and we have carrots growing in the veg garden.

Encorajado pelo relativo sucesso resolvi experimentar uma outra coisa. Lembrei-mer q tinha uma velha banheira na horta ainda à espera de destino e resolvi enchê-la de composto. Semeei cebolas, cenouras e rabanetes. As cebolas e os rabanetes já estão com um tamanho jeitoso e agora, finalmente começam a germinar as cenouras. Comparando com as que semeei anteriormente a taxa de germinação é muito melhor.

So, since I was finally having some degree of success with carrots I decided to try something diferent. I Remembered I had an old bath tub just laying around waiting to be used and turned it into a raised bed. I filled it with compost and sowed carrots, onions and radishes. Carrots and radishes were fast to germinate and grow, but the carrots are only starting to sprout. The germination rate is a lot higher then with the ones I sowed directly on the ground.

Não consigo explicar a diferença entre a taxa de germinação nos dois locais, mas cá me parece que vou passar a semear as cenouras sempre na banheira.

I can't realy explain the differences in germination rates, but one thing I'm sure...I'll keep on sowing carrots in the bath tub.

Semeei as favas "do Algarve" esta manhã. Com as chuvas que se avizinham devem germinar num instante. Entretanto fui passar revista às "Luz de Outono" à procura de pulgões e encontrei isto numa das folhas. Eu acho que é um "casulo" (não sei se casulo será o nome certo) de joaninha, mas não tenho a certeza. Alguém por aí faz ideia do que seja?

Just sowed some more broad beans this morning (this time I used a local variety "do Algarve", this will take longer to produce pods and should be ready to harvest around March/April). Meanwhile I checked the "Luz de Outono" for blackfly and didn't find any. What I did find was this cocoon in one of the leafs: I'm guessing its a ladybird cocoon. Can anyone confirm it?

As "Luz de Outono" semeadas em Agosto estão neste momento cheias de flor. Tal como prometido no pacote são bastante precoces e daqui a poucas semanas já poderão começar a ser colhidas.

The "Luz de Outono" broad beans are covered in flowers. Its a really early variety, and in a few weeks I'm expecting to start harvesting.

Ainda há dias estavam cobertas de pulgão e achei que dificilmente iriam dar vagens. De repente o pulgão desapareceu e as vagens começaram a crescer. Vi algumas joaninhas, que provavelmente tiveram alguma coisa a ver com o desaparecimento do pulgão (eu não lhes fiz tratamento nenhum).
Este fim de semana vou semear a variedade "Algarvia" que deverá dar favas só lá para Abril.

These pods were a real surprise to me. Just a few days ago the plants were covered in blackfly and I thought I wasn't going to get any broad beans. Then, just before I decided to treat it the blackfly was gonne. I did see a few lady bugs, which might explain it.
This weekend I'll sow another variety, "Algarvia", that will be ready to harvest around April

De vez em quando gosto de experimentar na horta. Umas vezes por ignorancia, outras por pura preguiça outras ainda só para ver o que acontece. Este ano para não variar tenho algumas dessas experiências a decorrer. Umas com maior grau de sucesso que outras...

Quando semeei os feijões, em finais de Agosto, achei que seria já tarde para ainda conseguir algumas sementes. Mas não. As vagens já estão enormes e os feijões a engordar. Daqui apouco devem estar bons para colher.

Every year I try some new things in the veg garden. Sometimes because I just don't know better, sometimes because I want to see how things work other just because I'm lazy.

When I sowed beans this year I thought it was already too late for that, but I wanted to give it a try. Turned out that it wasn't too late and the beans are almost ready to harvest (If I wanted green beans I would have already harvested them, but its the seeds I'm after this year)

Outra cultura que também achei que não daria nada foi o mangericão. Começaram a nascer espontaneamente quando comecei a regar o grão e eu deixei-os ficar. Cresceram o suficiente para já poderem ser apanhados e congelados para usar mais tarde. Nos outros anos sempre semeei o mangericão muito cedo e nesta altura já está todo em flor. Parece que vou poder fazer pelo menos duas sementeiras para o ano que vem.

One other culture I thought wouldn't be ready on time was basil. I planted basil in this bed last year and alowed it to go to seed. Some seeds must have fallen to the ground and sprouted when I started watering in August. I left them in place and now they are ready to pick and freeze for latter use.

Estas são as batatas q nasceram de forma espontânea em finais de Agosto. Na altura pensei em arrancá-las, porque estão a crescer com as favas e na certa não teriam tempo para formar batatas. A verdade é q acabei por deixá-las ficar e não estou nada arrependido. Já colhi as batatas que vos mostrei no outro dia e ainda lá ficaram umas quantas para mais tarde.

And I already told you about the volunteer potatoes. I'm glad I left them in place so that I could harvest a few potatoes before winter arrives.

O grão já é um caso diferente...semeei-o ao mesmo tempo que o feijão pensando que se um crescesse o outro também. O que eu não sabia na altura é que além de precisar de muito tempo para desnvolver o grão prefere temperaturas baixas e provavelmente não irá florir nem frutificar. As plantas por enquanto estão com muito bom aspecto e bom tamanho, e eu lá as vou deixando ficar a ver o que acontece. Pode ser que floresça quando o inverno chegar. Até lá vai ajudando a melhorar o solo.

Garbanzos are still growing well and looking luscious, but no sign of flowers. When I sowed them I didn't know they are cold weather vegetables and thought they would grow just like regular beans. Since they are growing in a small bed that I don't need for now I will allow the to keep on growing. Maybe they will bloom when winter arrives, if not they will improve the soil by fixating nitrogen.

E este é o resultado da minha famosa preguiça. Estas são cebolas q floriram o ano passado e portanto deveriam ter sido arrancadas e compostadas. Isso não aconteceu e surpresa daas surpresas estão a crescer! Eu sempre pensei que depois de florir as cebolas, como plantas bianuais, morriam. Afinal parece que não.

And these are onions. They bolted last year and I was too lazy to pull them and throw them in the compost bin. As a result they are growing again. I thought onions being bianual plants would die after bolting but it seems that is not the case...will these onions be good to harvest this spring?

Dois meses depois de semeadas começo a colher as primeiras alfaces. Os rabanetes esses foram semeados há pouco mais de duas semanas.
As "Folha de carvalho" apesar de pequenas começam a espigar...o que me faz pensar que não aguentam bem o calor (e que têm de ser comidas depressa). Não as vou semear mais sem que as temperaturas baixem mais um pouco.

It took them almost 8 weeks but the first lettuces are ready to pick. These "oak leaf" lettuces are even starting to bolt, making me think that they are more a winter lettuce. I won't seed them again until temperatures drop a bit.

Hoje resolvi-me e colhi algumas batatas das batateiras que nasceram de foma expontanea no canteiro das favas. As batatas são pequenas e não são muitas, mas tendo em conta q este ano não plantei batatas...valeu a pena tê~las deixado crescer.

I harvested a few small potatoes today. These were voluntiers in my garden this year...good thing I didn't pull them out when they started to grow.

Estão a ser um grande problema na horta este ano. Não sei se se deve ao facto de o terreno ter estado sem ser cultivado durante todo o Verão, mas os canteiros estão cheios destas lagartas (as famosas "lagartas subterrâneas"). Cut worms are realy a big problem in the veg garden, this year. I've been catching 2 or 3 every day ( never before they cause some damage). Pity I can't set the chickens loose in the garden, they love them!

Sementeiras/ Seedlings

As alfaces plantadas o mês passado têm crescido bem. Hoje foi dia de plantar novas alfaces, 4 variedades que nunca tinha semeado antes ("Bionda Foglia Liscia", "Salad Bowl", "Bionda del Ortolani"e "Verte Maraîchère"). Vamos ver se crescem tão bem e são tão boas como as dos anos passados.

Lettuces are growing at a good rateand today was the day to plant a few more. These are all new varieties to me ("Bionda Foglia Liscia", "Salad Bowl", "Bionda del Ortolani"and "Verte Maraîchère") , so I'm really excited to see how will they do and how tasty they are.

Ainda à espera de serem plantadas temos couves, couves-flor, alho francês, espinafres, nabos e mais ervilhas. Para não variar volto a fazer as sementeiras em módulos para depois as transplantar para a horta. É muito raro que a sementeira directa me dê bons resultados por isso cada vez mais este será o método a seguir.

I still have lots of seedlings wayting their turn. Cabbages, cauliflowers, turnips, leeks, spinach and more peas are still growing in modules until they are big enough to be planted out. Direct sowing simply doesn't give me good results, so apart from broad beans which work well when directly sowed I'm sowing everything else in modules.

Esta é a minha nova jaula para couves. Esta é maior e mais alta e destina-se a couves altas como as couves de Bruxelas e os broculos.

This is my other brassica cage. Its taller and wider because it's meant for taller brassicas like Bruxels sprouts and broccoli.

No interior, resguardadas de (quase) tudo, crescem os broculos e as couves de bruxelas. As couves galegas ainda estão muito atrasadas. Como podem ver têm, tal como as alfaces, estao protegidas com um rolo de cartão. As lagartas "subterraneas" (siceramente não sei que outro nome lhes dar) têm sido o maior problema da horta este ano. Vivem enterradas e cortam as plantas pela base. Planta que não seja protegida acaba devorada.

Inside the little plants are growing very fast. Note the toilet roll protecting them. Cutworm is really a problem this year and if I don't protect them the little seedling will be destroyed.

As outras couves estão a crecer bem na outra gaiola. Aqui não tive problemas com a lagarta "subterranea". Curioso como parece afectar apenas alguns canteiros.

Kale is also growing fast inside the other cage. Cutworm seems to leave them alone. Funny how only some beds are afflicted by it.

Corrida contra o tempo/ Running against time

Os poucos feijoeiros que cresceram estão agora a florir e com as primeiras vagens a crescer. Irão ter tempo para amadurecer, ou vou ficar sem sementes para o ano que vem?

The few bean stalks that are growing in the veg garden have started blooming and we can already see the first pods. I'm afraid the cold weather will arrive before they are ready to pick. Or not? We'll see...

Ao mesmo tempo o grão começa agora a desenvolver as flores. No caso destes parece-me impossível que consigam desenvolver a tempo de podermos colher sementes.

Same thing with the garbanzo beans. These take longer to devolope, and they are only starting to show the first flower buds, so I think that these were a waist of seeds. Or maybe not...legumes are great to fix nitrogen in the soil.

Cresceram no canteiro onde semeei as favas. Provavelmente de alguma batata que lá ficou esquecida.

These are growing in the bread beans bed, probably from some potato that I forgot to pick.

E já começam a dar flor. A grande questão é, conseguirei colher algumas batatas daqui?

As primeiras ervilhas /Peas

Outra das coisas que semeei mais cedo este ano foram as ervilhas. Segundo o calendário hortícola, as ervilhas podem começar a ser semeadas em Setembro. Vai daí resolvi experimentar. estas são ervilhas da variedade "Capucijners", uma variedade holandesa que dá vagens de cor roxa. O ano passado cresceram bem em Fevereiro, vamos ver como se vão dar este ano.

I started sowing peas really early this year. The Portuguese horticultural calendar recomends that you should start sowing peas in September, so I decided to give it a try (I usualy only sow them in November). These are "Capucijners" a dutch purple podded variety. They grew really well last February, we'll see how they'll this year.

Enjauladas! / Caged veggies!

Já andava há algum tempo para experimentar isto. Este ano decidi-me e construí uma "gaiola" para as couves. As couves sempre foram uma das culturas mais difíceis para mim porque estão sempre a ser atacadas por isto ou por aquilo, e como não quero usar pesticidas acabam por sofrer muito às "mãos" (ou deveria dizer bocas?) das lagartas da couve, dos pulgões, dos escaravelhos... Vi esta ideia na net e achei-a ideal. A ideia é que as couves cresçam protegidas no interior da gaiola, sem que os insectos consigam lá entrar. Esta é a primeira que construí e já está a proteger as primeiras couves que plantei este ano ("Russian red" e "Lacinato". Estou a construir uma maior e mais alta para as, também mais altas couves de Bruxelas, couves galegas e broculos. Espero bem que a coisa funcione!

I had seen it before in gardening blogs, but I had never tried it. A brassica cage!
I decided to build one this year (actually two) to protect the, ever afflicted with oh so many pests, brassicas. This is the first one and it is currently protecting "Russian red", and "Lacinato" kale. I'm building a bigger one for may broccoli, Brussel sprouts and "Walking cane" kale. I hope they work!

As favas que semeei há duas semanas começam agora a nascer. É a primeira vez a semeeio favas tão cedo, mas esta é uma variedade precoce ("Luz do outono") que deve ser semeada em Agosto para ser colhida em Novembro/Dezembro. Vamos ver como corre a coisa.

Broad beans are sprouting. Looks a bit early to sow them, but these are a eraly variety ("Luz de outono") and they should be sowed in August to harvest in November/December. We will see how it goes.

Quem é que me anda a comer as alfaces? /Something is eating my lettuces!

Qualquer coisa anda a comer-me as alfaces. Na fotografia não se vê muito bem mas esta pequena alface está cortada pela base. Tem sido uma constante de há uns dias para cá, todas as manhãs uma ou duas estão neste estado. Andei a investigar e parece-me ser obra de larvas de borboleta nocturna (Amathes c-nigrum ou similar) a que os ingleses chamam cutworm. As larvas vivem debaixo do solo e alimentam-se desta maneira, roendo os caules das plantas. Neste momemto já me destruíram duas filas de alfaces. Em teoria consegue-se evitar o seu ataque colocando uma barreira física em redor do caule e raiz das plantas, um anel de metal, papel ou cartão costumam ser eficazes.

I think I might have cutworms growing in my lettuce patch. Every morning one or two of them is cut by its base . I've been reading about it and it seems like the way to stop them is to put metal or paper collar around the base of the plant.

Ainda bem que costumo guardar os cilindros de cartão que vêem no interior dos rolos de papel higiénico e papel de cozinha. Em vez dos habituais vasos para semear utilizei-os para proteger as plantas e agora todas as alfaces têm un anel de cartão a protegê-las. Espero que funcione ou, por este andar, fico sem alfaces.

I always keep my paper rolls, so I had plenty to use for this. All my lettuces have now a paper roll around its base. I hope this works or, by the looks of it I will loose all my lettuces.

O calor do verão começa a abrandar e já apetece outra vez trabalhar a horta. Depois de meses em que nada cresceu é tempo de começar a semear e a plantar novamente.

Looks like the temperature is dropping making it bearable to work in the vegetable garden again. So, after doing nothing for a few months I started planting again.

Desde meados de Agosto que tenho andado a semear e neste momento crescem na horta alfaces,

So, since mid August I started sowing things and right now I already have a few vegetables growing. Lettuce was the first thing to plant.

e grão de bico (é a primeira vez que o semeio tão tarde, mas como ainda temos pela frente mais uns dois meses antes da chegada do tempo frio, devo conseguir colher qualquer coisa). A crescer entre eles, salsa e mangericão que cresceram espontaneamente.

Then I decided to try and sow chick peas. I know the summer is ending but we still have a couple of months before winter really arrives, meaning they should have enough time to grow.

A grande decepção veio dos feijões. De todos os que semeei (e não foram poucos) apenas tenho uma meia duzia de plantas. Espero que sejam suficientes para ter sementes novas para o ano que vem. As sementes que usei tinham 2 anos, não eram velhas portanto, esperava que a taxa de germinação fosse maior...

I also sowed some beans, but these were a major disappointment. Out of all the seeds I used (and it was a lot) I only got about half a dozen plants. The seeds I used were 2 years old, so I was expecting a higher germination rate. I hope to get some fresh seeds from these plants so I can sow them next year.

E beldroegas, muitas beldroegas... O canteiro que deveria estar cheio de feijoeiros está, em vez disso cheio de beldroegas. Sempre dá para umas sopas...

And apart from the things I sowed we have lots and lots of purslane. The bean bed is covered with it. I guess I will have to make soup out of them.

Couscous

É em dias como o de hoje que me arrependo de ser tão preguiçoso. Tudo isto (bem...menos o couscous) poderia ter saído da minha horta...mas em vez disso veio do supermercado. Porquê? Porque deixei a preguiça levar a melhor e acabei por não plantar nada este ano. A ultima colheita que fiz foram as favas e onde é que isso já vai.... Hoje comecei a preparar a terra para os cultivos de Outono e com um bocado de sorte ainda consigo semear e colher algum feijão rasteiro. Maldita preguiça!!

I was having lunch today and thinking "why oh why am I such a lazy gardener?" I could be eating freshly picked vegetables and instead all of this came from the supermarket. This was a terribly rainy winter and a terribly hot summer so I used those excuses to explain why I wasn't planting vegetables. The truth is I am just too lazy...
Starting today I'm preparing the soil for autumn cultures and with a bit of luck I can still sow and pick some beans. Why oh why am I such a lazy gardener....

É outra vez aquela altura do ano em que as resolvem fazer greve. Já não bastava as duas pretas (Lola e Paquita) estarem chocas há coisa de 3 semanas agora é a vez da MariCarmen (que como não cabe no ninho fica deitada ao lado. Resumindo, das 4 só uma está a por ovos, o que não é muito bom. Tenho mesmo de ampliar o galinheiro e arranjar mais umas galinhas...

It's that time of year again. The girls are all going broody...Lola and Paquita (the black ones) have been sitting on the nest for the past 3 weeks and now is time for MariCarmen to sit next to them. This means that out of 4 chickens only one is laying. That's not very good is it? I really have to enlarge the chicken pen and get some more chickens...

Esperta é a Conchita que continua a pôr o seu ovinho diário e como tem o galinheiro só para si é sempre a primeira a chegar às goluseimas e a comer a melhor parte.

Conchita is the only one laying. This means she doesn't spend her time on the nest and has the whole pen for her. This also means she get all the treats.

Mais uma vez os melros nidificaram no jardim. Desta vez não sei onde estáo ninho, mas a constante presença dos adultos no jardim não engana.

I think the blackbirds have nested in the garden again. I'm not sure where the nest is but seeing the adults in the garden is a sure sign of it.

Esta tarde era vê-los para cá e para lá em busca de comida.

This afternoon I spent a good half hour watching them as they came in surch of food.

O jardim não está no seu melhor este ano, O inverno muito rigoroso deixou estragos e o tempo não tem sido muito para o compor. No entanto algumas plantas não decepcionam e quando vistos de perto alguns recantos são mesmo muito bonitos.

This is not a good year for the garden. We had one of the hardest winters that I can recall and that really damaged the garden. Nevertheless some of the plants never disappoint and a few garden spots are looking really good when looked at up-close.

Aqui estou eu de novo! Desde já as minhas desculpas a quem veio ao blog em busca de novos posts e durante dois meses teve de levar com as favas. Não tenho tido tempo, não me tem apetecido, ando exausto...as desculpas poderiam ser muitas, mas a verdade, verdadinha é que não tenho tido nada para dizer. A minha vida não esteve parada , coisas aconteceram...mas achei que não valia a pena escrever sobre elas.

A horta está praticamente abandonada este ano, com as chuvas as ervas cresceram desenfreadamente e não tenho tido tempo (nem costas) para os trabalhos de limpeza. Entretanto o calor chegou em força e já não é boa altura para sementeiras e transplantes. Vou plantar umas melancias que semeei e depois logo se vê.

O jardim não está mau, embora tenha umas ervas a precisarem de ser arrancadas. Milagrosamente (toc toc toc , bate na madeira) o cachorro novo não tem instintos de jardineiro e, pelo menos por agora, não arranca plantas nem escava buracos.

Falando de cachorros, o Draco está, como seria de esperar, enorme e aos 5 meses pesa mais de 40 kg. A Maria Antonia teve uma recaída , mas depois de alguns dias de tratamento hoje começou a melhorar.

As miúdas continuam a gozar do seu estatuto de galinhas de estimação, não se preocupando grandemente em por ovos. Duas delas voltaram a ficar chocas, o que quer dizer que nos próximos tempos não vão por ovos. Os planos são de ampliar o galinheiro e trazer pelo menos mais 4 miúdas novas.

Os gatos esses estão óptimos como sempre, exceptuando o Sebastião que desapareceu há cerca de 2 meses. Como eu costumo dizer (e prefiro acreditar) fez as malas e mudou-se para a casa de alguém que não tem cães e tem uma lareira à frente da qual pode dormitar o dia todo.

Está feito o relatório. Espero sinceramente conseguir voltar a publicar regularmente, e sobretudo espero que quem quer que seja que está desse lado volte a acompanhar as aventuras no jardim dos gatos.

I can't believe its been two months since my last post! I should start by apologising to all of you that kept coming here in search of news. I could find a ton of excuses ("no time", "I didn't feel like it", "I was too tired") but in reality I just didn't feel I had anything interesting to say.

The vegetable garden is a real big mess this spring. The weeds have outgrown any vegetables and I just couldn't find the time or strenght take care of them.

The garden isn't looking bad despite having a few weeds that need to be pulled. Luckily tyhe new dog doesn't have the bad habit of pulling the plants or opening holes in the garden (knock on wood)

Speaking of dogs...Draco is huge, as it should be. He is now 5 months old and weights more than 40kg (80 pounds...I think). Maria Antonia has been sick again, having a relapse on her sandfly fever. She's under treatment for 5 days now and is showing signs of improvement.

The girls are still around, alive and healthy. Being the pampered pet chickens that they are they are not too worried about laying and 2 of them are already broody. The plan is to build a new, bigger pen and get at least 4 new girls.

The cats are great as usual. Unfortunately one of them, Sebastião, went missing soon after Draco arrived. I like to think he packed his bags and went to live in a dog free home (he really hated the dogs).

Well, there we go, I updated you on everything. I promise I will be around more often and I hope you keep on passing by to read on everything hapening at "Jardim com Gatos"

Outra que não passa da "cepa-torta". Todas as primaveras começa a crecscer e a florir, todos os verões se queima, todos os invernos morre até ao tronco principal. Sou eu que estou enganado ou deveria crescer até se tornar uma árvore de tamanho médio? Não deveria crescer bem no clima quente do Algarve? Alguém tem algumas ideias?

This is a tree that is really annoying me. Its been in the ground for years now and it is still an ugly stump. Don't get me wrong, the tree is alive and it grows. It starts to grow every spring, then when the weather gets warmer the flowers get scorched and then, to put the cherry on the cake, during winter it dies back to the main trunk. Does anyone have any experience with this? Shouldn't it grow to a tree? Should it grow and bloom well in my hot climate?

O "relvado" de tomilho/ Thyme lawn

Parece que finalmente encontrei um tomilho que dará um bom "relvado". Enquanto que todas as outras especies q experimentei acabaram por não aguentar os rigores do Verão e morrer este manteve-se vivo, cresceu e está com optimo aspecto. A má noticia é que o comprei num viveiro e vinha sem qualquer identificação. Assim não me vai ser possivel comprar mais e terei de o tentar reproduzir. Parece que este projecto ainda levará muito tempo até ficar completo.

Looks like I finally found the right thyme for my lawn. after trying with a few diferent species it looks like this is the one. All the others died but this one is beautiful after one year (meaning it spent summer and winter in the garden and still looks nice). The bad thing about it is that I bought it in a garden center and it didn't come with a label, so I have no idea of which species/cultivar it is. I will have to try to reproduce it if I want a good lawn. Looks like this is a project that will still take some time to be finished.

Mais uma manhã de jardinagem. Mais uma manhã a arrancar ervas. Ainda assim continua com este aspecto. Bastante melhor do que estava mas ainda longe do seu melhor.

I spent this morning pulling weeds. This is a task that seems never to end. But the garden is starting to look better.

A maior parte dos arbustos já foram podados e estão agora com melhor aspecto. Ainda há muita erva por arrancar, mas acreditem, a maior parte já foi parar ao compostor.

The shrubs have been pruned and look a lot better. And even though there is still a lot of weed to be pulled, most of them are in the compost bin already.

Finalmente um fim de semana sem chuva! Aproveitei e passei o dia a jardinar. O jardim estava horrível, depois de um inverno muito frio e chuvoso. Muitas ervas daninhas, muitas plantas mortas. Depois de um dia inteiro de trabalho o aspecto ainda não é melhor, mas lá chegará.

A sunny weekend at last! I spent most of today in the garden doing some gardening. Did I missed that! The garden looks a mess covered with weeds and with lots of dead plants. That's what an unusually cold and damp winter will do to a mediterranean garden. At the end of the day it wasn't looking much better, but wit time things will go back to its normal.

Finalmente consegui arrancar o Echium candicans que tinha morrido durante o inverno (a principal baixa além das Lavandula angustifolia) e deparei com uma surpresa. Por baixo do Echium crescia um Aloe arborescens que já nem me lembrava de ter plantado. Está com bastante mau aspecto mas depressa deve recuperar e ocupar o espaço antes preenchido pelo Echium.

One of the things I did today was to break apart and shred the dead Echium candicans (one of this weather victims along with several adult lavenders). When doing so, I discovered a Aloe arborescens growing under it. I didn't even remembered having planted it. It's not looking its best but soon enough it will grow and cover the empty space left by the Echium.

Correndo o risco de transformar isto num blog sobre cães aqui vão mais umas fotos do "rebento"(de notar a expressão vagamente alusiva a jardins). As fotos já não são de agora, mas com este tempo não tenho conseguido fazer fotos decentes. No jardim e na horta continua tudo à mercê da intempérie (sendo que a única coisa que parece crescer com gosto são as ervas daninhas)

I know this is suposed to be a garden blog. Not a blog about dogs. But...I haven't been gardening much lately (the weather just won't improve) and you have to admit that puppy photos are always cute to look at. Besides I would be ashamed to show you any garden or vegetable garden photos (nothing there but weeds...big weeds - the only thing that seems to like these heavy rains).
These are not recent pictures (2-3 weeks old, but the weather hasn't been good for pictures either)

Apresento-vos o Draco, o mais novo elemento da familia. Tem mês e meio e está cá em casa há duas semanas. É, como não podia deixar de ser um Dogue Alemão o que quer dizer que ainda tem muito que crescer para chegar aos 70kg que o B tinha. Também quer dizer que as asneiras no jardim vão ser mais que muitas...

Meet Draco, he is our newest family member. He is 6 weeks old and has been with us for 2 weeks now. He is a Great Dane (obviously) which means he still has a long way to go until he reaches his grown up size. Lots of garden damage too...

Já há imenso tempo que por aqui não aparecia. Há quase um mês...Na verdade não tenho tido nada sobre o que teclar. Com o Inverno que tivemos, em que quase não parou de chover, não passei tempo nenhum no jardim nem na horta e com a doença e morte do meu cão deixou de haver passeios pelo campo. Nem assunto nem vontade.
Agora é altura de recomeçar.

Um dia de sol, finalmente / A sunny day, at last

Finalmente parou de chover. Hoje pela primeira vez consegui ir à horta (com o frio e chuva que tem feito só lá tenho ido a correr dar de comer às miúdas). Confesso que o panorama não é muito animador. Sem qualquer tipo de cuidados e entregues às intempéries grande parte das plantas que tinha semeado simplesmente desapareceram (mortas, devoradas por insectos, nem sei...). As ervas daninhas tomaram conta dos canteiros, todas animadas com a água que tem caído constantemente. Tenho muito trabalho à frente, mas para isso tem de parar de chover.

Finally a day without rain! Ever since it started a month ago we only had one or two days without it. Today I managed to go to the vegetable garden and have a look at things. Didn't look nice...Most of the vegetables have disappeared (drowned, eaten by bugs... ) and the weeds took over the place. I have lots
of work ahead (if only the rain stops)

Ao contrário do que poderia parecer não vou falar mais uma vez do clima. Este é um post sobre os cães. Já há algum tempo não vos punha ao corrente sobre o seu estado de saúde.
Por enquanto estão os dois relativamente bem, tendo em conta os seus achaques. A Maria Antonia continua a tomar a sua medicação diaria e por enquanto continua sem quaisquer sinais de leishmaniose. Já o B coitado embora pareça estar a reagir bem à quimioterapia começa a sofrer problemas relacionados com a idade, desde que a temperatura baixou que tem andado cheio de dores nas articulações e a comer menos. Vai daí optei por lhe arranjar uma roupa para o ajudar a combater o frio. E lá anda ele com a sua sweatshirt, como o ar mais ridiculo deste mundo, mas pelo menos anda quente.

This is not a post about climate change or any of the things that worry me so much these days. As you should have guessed by now it's a post about my dogs (and their illnesses).
The smaller one, Maria Antonia keeps responding very well to treatment and no one could tell that she has sandfly fever. B, the great dane, on the other hand, even though he is responding well to chemotherapy, is starting to suffer from old age. Ever since the temperatures dropped he is always cold and suffering joint pain, because of that (I think) he is also eating a bit less. So I offered him one of my sweatshirts to keep him warm. And there he is, looking a bit ridiculous, but at least he is warm.

Ervilhas /Peas

As ervilhas já crescem na horta. As primeiras que plantei (não me recordo agora a variedade) já estão inclusivamente com vagens a crescer. São supostamente ervilhas de trepar mas por agora matêem-se bastante pequenas.

Things are moving in the pea bed. These are the first ones I've sown (can't remember the name of the variety), and they are growing their first pods. They were suposed to be a climbing variety, but for the time being they are rather small.

As ervilhas de quebrar também já germinaram todas e começam a crescer a bom ritmo.

Snap peas have also sprouted and are growing quite well.

Por ultimo as ervilhas roxas. Estava com medo que nem germinassem porque fui darcom as sementes a começarem a ganhar bolor (não sei bem o que se passou, mas havia humidade no frasco onde as guardei), mas afinal ainda estavam viaveis e começaram a germinar por estes dias.

And the purple poded peas...I'm so glad these are sprouting! I thought I had lost them since the seeds (for some weird and unknown reason) were starting to get mouldy. I need to review my seed saving/storing technique.

As noites têm arrefecido bastante e espera-se que venham a arrefecer mais ainda. Por aqui as geadas não são frequentes, mas só para prevenir e porque as batatas ainda não estão prontas para apanhar resolvi cobri-las com esta tela de crescimento que encontrei à venda no outro dia. A tela cobre as plantas mantendo uma temperatura mais amena e ao mesmo tempo permite que a luz penetre a que as plantas continuem a crescer. Estou aqui a pensar que também deve servir para proteger as couves das borboletas...se calhar vou comprar mais uma e experimentar.

Nights are getting colder around here and even if frost is not a common occurence around here we never know, so I decided to cover the potatoes with this growing fleece. This should protect them from any unexpected until they are good to harvest. This should probably be a good idea to protect my cabbages from the dreaded cabbage butterflies. I think i'll give it a try...

For those of you that don't think the weather is changing have a look at this fig tree. It should be naked by now, instead its covered with leaves and as if that wasn´t enough its starting to produce figs (which should only happen around June).

Novas mascotes? /New pets?

Ontem à noite como de costume fui até lá fora para alimentar os gatos. Comida nos pratos e 4 gatos a aparecerem vindos dos cantos mais reconditos do jardim. Até aqui tudo bem. Fui alimentar os cães e voltei para fechar a "casa dos gatos" (como chamo à arrecadação onde comem e têem as camas. Olhei novamente para ver se estava tudo bem e o que é que vi?

Last night I went out side, as usual to feed the cats. Nothing extraordinary about it. I called the cats and they came runing from the four corners of the garden as they alwyas do. After everyone was served I went to feed the dogs and when I came to turn the lights of what did I see?

Uma lesma! Uma lesma grande, gorda e nojenta a descer a parede. Confesso que é um bicho que me dá um bocado de asco. Que é que havia de fazer? Pegar nela nem pensar, a ideia de a esborrachar ali ao pé da comida dos gatos dava-me a volta ao estomago e as galinhas já estavam a dormir (sempre que encontro alguma lesma ou caracol na horta levo-os a conhecer umas novas amiguinhas)

This is what I saw, a slug! A big, slimy slug sliding down the wall. What was I to do? Slugs gross me up a bit so there was no way I would pick that thing with my bare hands, the idea of squashing it near the cats food was out of the question and the chickens were asleep so I couldn throw it into the chicken pen and wait for the to finish the dirty work.

Fui buscar qualquer coisa coma que a conseguisse agarrar (sem ter de lhe tocar com os dedos, claro!), e quando volto deparo com este espectaculo. O raio do bicho já tinha chegado ao pé dos pratos e entretinha-se a comer um grão de ração! Mudança de planos...voltei pra casa para ir buscar a camara fotografica (que isto é matéria para blog hehehe)

So I went into the house to find something to pick the slug with and when I came back this is what I see. It had already climbed down the wall and was munching on a bit of cat food! Change of plans...I have to photograph this to my blog! Back into the house to get the camera.

Quando voltei encontrei não uma lesma devoradora de ração mas 4! Uma a descer a parede sabe-se lá de onde e outras duas tal como a primeira já de volta dos pratos a comerem os grãos que de lá caíam. Os gatos não pareceram nada incomodados com o assunto e eu ainda estou a tentar processar a informação. Acabei por as deixar lá ficar, se comem ração é porque devem, provavelmente ser carnivoras (o que contraria aquilo que sei sobre estes bichos), por outro lado assim de paça cheia é pouco provavel que vão comer as minhas plantas. Por último servem para manter o sítio limpo (eu já tinha estranhado a não existencia de comida em volta dos pratos dos gatos, mas nunca me passou pela cabeça que existisse um esquadrão de limpeza nem que fosse composto por estes bichos)

Back into the cat's quarters (as I call it) I found that the cat food eating slug had a family! 4 slugs were now near my cat's food (one climbing down the wall and 2 others near the first one). The cats didn't look bothered and I started having mixed feelings about it. In the end I left the slugs with their business. I figure that either they are carnivorous or after a meal of cat food they shouldn't be hungry anymore Either way they should not be very interested in my plants. And at least they keep the house clean!

Para já, e até prova em contrário tenho mais 4 "animais de estimação" ( o termo é talvez exagerado mas enfim...).

So, for the time being I have a few new pets (pets is probably not the right word, but still...)

Outra das tarefas da manhã foi a limpeza do galinheiro. Confesso que já precisava, a ultima vez que lhe tinha posto palha nova foi no inicio do Verão.

I also cleaned the chicken pen this mornig. It really needed it, I have to admit, the last time I had cleaned it was in June.

As miúdas deliraram com o galinheiro limpo e com palha nova. No meio da palha vêem sempre algumas espigas e sementes de trigo e elas adoram esgravatar à sua procura.

In the end the girls were very excited with the new straw. They love to scrach around looking for seeds.

A palha velha, essa foi directa para o compostor.

The dirty straw went into the compost bin where it will be transformed into lovelly compost.

Trabalhos na horta /Some veg garden work

Finalmente consegui algum tempo livre que me possibilitou realizar tarefas que há muito eram necessárias na horta. Parte da manhã foi ocupada a limpar esta cama, cobri-la com uma camada de composto, uma de cartão e uma de palha. A técnica foi "roubada" aqui e é a primeira vez que a vou utilizar. Tem a vantagem de que não há necessidade de cavar a terra melhorando assim a qualidade do solo e impedir o crescimento de daninhas. O resto da horta ainda foi trabalhada do maneira tradicional.

I finally managed to find some free time to work on the vegetable garden. It sure was needed. Most of the morning was spent in cleaning this large bed, covering it with compost, than with cardboard and finally with straw. This way we can improve the soil without digging it, The cardboard will also prevent the weeds from growing. The rest of the veg garden has been done in the more traditional way (digging the compost into it) but if this works i think its the way to go.

Nas outras camas já crescem algumas culturas.
As favas estão enormes, este tempo quente tem-lhes feito bem. Pode ser que este ano, finalmente, as favas produzam bem.

Elsewhere in the garden broad beans are huge. The warm weather has been good to them. Maybe this will be 'the year of the broad bean'.

As alfaces também têm crescido bem e estão quase boas para começar a panhar. Estas são alfaces "Orelhas do diabo", uma das minhas variedades favoritas.

Lettuce is also growing well and almost ready for harvest. These are "Ears of the devil" one of my favorite. Beautiful, tender and tasty.

As batatas plantadas o mês passado também têm aproveitado o tempo quente e crescido bastante. Parece que foi boa ideia tê-las plantado fora de época.

Potatoes sowed last month have also take advantage of the warm weather. I guess it was a good idea to plant them after all.

Já para as brassicas (couves, nabos...) este está a ser um ano terrivel. As temperaturas amenas têm favorecido a proliferação das borboletas da couve e das suas famigeradas larvas. Todas as plantas que plantei este ano foram devoradas e as que ficaram do ano passado com a intenção de guardar sementes (como a rutabaga da foto) ficaram com o lindo aspecto que se vê na foto. Por mais que pulverize com piretro acabam sempre por surgir novas lagartas que comem o que ainda resta. Para já desisti de plantar mais brassicas até que as temperaturas baixem e deixem de haver borboletas.
Brassicas on the other and are having quite a hard time. Because temperatures are still high, cabbage butterflies are still flying around laying eggs in every brassica they find. All the seedlings have been eaten to the root and the older plants that I saved to collect seed have been transformed into a skeleton like the rutabaga in the foto. As much as I kill them with pyrethrum there are still new ones appearing every day.No more brassicas will go into the garden until temperatures don't drop.

No jardim/In the garden

O tempo para jardinar vai sendo pouco, para "blogar" também. Pergunto-me como é que ainda há um ano tinha tempo para fazer tanta coisa. Os dias diminuíram?
Entretanto no jardim algumas coisas correm menos bem. Ainda não consegui fazer as tão necessárias podas das alfazemas o que dá uma ar um pouco desmazelado ao jardim. Para culminar o meu Echium candicans está no estado que a foto mostra, seco, morto. E eu nem consigo arranjar uma justificação para tal. É certo que são plantas de vida curta mas assim tão curta? Felizmente tenho um descendente pronto a ser plantado no seu lugar. Agora só tenho de arranjar tempo (e coragem) para o arrancar dali, triturar e atirar para a pilha de composto.

I haven't spent much time gardening lately , I haven't spent much time blogging either. Where does the time fly? I wonder how was it that even a year ago I had time to do everything. Are days getting shorter?
Things don't look so well in the garden. I still have to prune the lavenders, meaning that the garden looks too shabby. And on top of that my garden pride, my adored Echium candicans looks like that...dry, grey, dead. I know they have short live, but this short? Luckily I managed to keep a cutting that is ready to be planted in its place. I now only have to find the time (and the courage) to take it down, chop it into peaces and throw it in the compost bin.

Semeando ervilhas /Sowing peas

Hoje passei a manhã a preparar os suportes e a semear ervilhas. Optei por suportes em zigzag, assim posso utilizar mias facilmente o espaço entre as ervilhas para semear outras culturas (alfaces, couves, espinafres...ainda não está decidido). Utilizei esta rede verde que se vende precisamente para utilizar como suporte de ervilhas ou feijões, mas jurei para nunca mais. Levei mais de metade da manhã só para conseguir desemaranhar aquilo. Para o ano estou a pensar numa coisa mais simples.

I spent the entire morning sowing peas. Yes, the entire morning! Why? Because I was stupid enough to use that green mesh in building the peas support. More than half of the time was consumed in disentangling the damn thing! Please remind me never to use it again. In fact I'm already thinking about an easier solution for next year.

Na horta /In the veg garden

Este está a ser um Outono muito atípico (alguém se lembra de temperaturas na ordem dos 35ºC em finais de Outubro?) Talvez por isso ainda há bastantes culturas de Verão na minha horta. Pimentos, tomates, beringelas e melões ainda crescem como se fosse Agosto.

This is definitely not your average autumn. With temperatures going to as high as 35ºc in October the veg garden is a mixture of Summer and Winter vegetables. Right now we have peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and melons still growing amongst the recently sowed winter vegetables.

Ao mesmo tempo começam a crescer as culturas invernais. As favas foram as primeiras a nascer. Este ano semeei a variedade Algarvia em vez da Aquadulce que usei nos anos anteriores. Semeei também uma quantidade bastante maior, na esperança de ter finalmente uma boa colheita.

Broad beans were the first ones to sprout. This is a new variety 'Algarvia' instead of the 'Aquadulce' that I've been sowing for the past two years. Being a local variety I'm hoping for a better crop.

As ervilhas também já germinaram. Não sei ao certo que variedade são mas são bastante doces e produtivas.

Peas are also growing. These are a unknown tall variety.

As primeiras alfaces são da variedade "Ears of the devil". No outono e primavera passados cresceram muito bem e são bastante tenras e saborosas. Estas provêm de sementes de produção própria. Ainda a crescer e à espera de serem transplantadas para a horta temos alfaces "Sheerwood" e "Iceberg".

The first lettuces are "Ears of the devil". They grew well last year and wre really tender and tasty so I saved some seeds for this year. I also have some "Iceberg" and "Sheerwood" seedlings growing and waiting to be transplanted to the garden.

As cebolas e alhos planos há 2-3 semanas também já cresceram bastante. Vamos ver como me corre a experiência de plantar as cebolas que o ano passado não cresceram o suficiente. A ideia é deixá-las crescer até um tamanho aceitável e depois colhê-las antes de florirem.

Onions and garlic are also growing very well. Soon we will see if using last year's "little onions" was a good idea or not.

Também a crescer noutros canteiros temos espinafres e batatas. As batatas são uma outra experiência. Como o tempo está quente e não há risco de geadas estou a contar conseguir uma pequena colheita de batatinhas novas antes que o inverno chegue de vez. vamos ver como me corre...

Growing in other two beds we have spinach and potatoes. Potatoes are an experiment. I'm hopping I'll be able to harvest potatoes around Christmas.

Flores de cacto /Blooming cactus

Com as chuvas seguidas de dias quentes grande parte das plantas reiniciaram o seu crescimento e começam a florir. Esta é uma Mammillaria plumosa um cacto com os espinhos semelhantes a penas. As flores são diminutas mas muito delicadas e bonitas quando vistas de perto.

Rainy days followed by warm sunny days make Autumn a growing and blooming time for many plants. This is Mammilaria plumosa a cactus with feather like thorns (can we call them thorns?). The flowers are tinny but beautiful when looked with a macro lens.

Recomeçar/Starting again

Passados os meses quentes de Verão estamos na altura de recomeçar os trabalhos na horta. Arrancar os restos das culturas de Verão, revolver a terra, incorporar composto e fertilizante (estrume de ovelha compostado, no meu caso) e reiniciar as culturas de Outono/Inverno. É altura de semear alfaces, couves, nabos. Vou também experimentar semear ervilhas e plantar batatas (li algures que assim talvez consiga ter batatinhas novas para o Natal). Hoje foi o dia de plantar alhos e cebolas. Este ano além de ter semeado cebolas (que ainda estou à espera que germinem) vou ainda plantar todas as cebolas demasiado pequenas para consumir que colhi na horta. Espero que cresçam até terem um tamanho decente para serem consumidas.

Its time to start the vegetable garden all over again. The summer months are gone and the temperatures are dropping, its time for autumn/winter crops. I'm sowing lettuce, turnips, brassicas and I'm also going to try and plant some potatoes (hopping they will be ready by Christmas) and some peas (I never sowed them this soon). Today I planted garlic and onions. I sowed some more onions but since I had lots of small onions from last season I thought I'd use them as onion sets. I hope they will grow to be big juicy onions this time.

Vespas aos molhos/ Lots of wasps

Depois de no outro dia ter encontrado os 2 ninhos de vespas andei pelo jardim a observar os arbustos com atenção. Encontrei não 1, nem 2 mas 5 outros vespeiros sendo que o maior (na foto) deve cerca de 15 cm de diâmetro. Obviamente estão todos em posições estratégicas e em arbustos que eu queria podar. O jardim vai ter de continuar com mau aspecto um pouco mais de tempo.

After finding those wasp nests the other day I became more cautious and always looked carefully before starting to prune. And I was right. After looking around the garden I found another 5. The biggest one was about 15 cm in diameter. They were all built in shrubs that I wanted to prune. Pruning will have to be put on hold.

Ainda sem ovos /Still no eggs

A miúdas continuam em greve já não põem ovos há cerca de 2 meses. Duas delas já fizeram a muda completa das penas. A MariCarmen ainda está a começar e a pobre Lola vai a meio da sua muda. Ao contrário das outras esta pobre perdeu grande parte das penas ao mesmo tempo e está com um aspecto que mete medo. Assim não admira que não haja ovos...

The girls seem to be on strike still. The last egg was layed over 2 months ago. Two of them have already finished moulting, MariCarmen is only starting and poor Lola is right at the middle of it. Unlike the others she lost most of her feathers at once and she looks terrible. Scarry looking chicken...No wonder there are no eggs...
