Flores de cacto /Blooming cactus

dsc_0004

Rainy days followed by warm sunny days make Autumn a growing and blooming time for many plants. This is Mammilaria plumosa a cactus with feather like thorns (can we call them thorns?). The flowers are tinny but beautiful when looked with a macro lens.

Se.../If only...

dsc_0138

I could have had a great pomegranate crop this year if only it hadn't rain before they were ripe and I didn't have a bad back for the past two weeks...

Recomeçar/Starting again

dsc_0117

Its time to start the vegetable garden all over again. The summer months are gone and the temperatures are dropping, its time for autumn/winter crops. I'm sowing lettuce, turnips, brassicas and I'm also going to try and plant some potatoes (hopping they will be ready by Christmas) and some peas (I never sowed them this soon). Today I planted garlic and onions. I sowed some more onions but since I had lots of small onions from last season I thought I'd use them as onion sets. I hope they will grow to be big juicy onions this time.

Vespas aos molhos/ Lots of wasps

dsc_0013-1

After finding those wasp nests the other day I became more cautious and always looked carefully before starting to prune. And I was right. After looking around the garden I found another 5. The biggest one was about 15 cm in diameter. They were all built in shrubs that I wanted to prune. Pruning will have to be put on hold.

Ainda sem ovos /Still no eggs

dsc_0040-2

The girls seem to be on strike still. The last egg was layed over 2 months ago. Two of them have already finished moulting, MariCarmen is only starting and poor Lola is right at the middle of it. Unlike the others she lost most of her feathers at once and she looks terrible. Scarry looking chicken...No wonder there are no eggs...

Tudo bem...fica pra outro dia.../ Ok...I'll do it latter...

Today I decided it was time to prune all those ugly dry shrubs in the garden. After pruning my Echium candicans I was going to start pruning the salvia bush that growes next to it. I didn't get to start because when I looked down at it this is what I

E logo ao lado, a cerca de 20 cm mais um.

And next to it (20 cm apart),

They didn't exibit any type of agressive behavior but I think it will be long before its save to touch it (the colony will die in the winter and the queen, the only surviver will burie it self to survive the winter). The salvia will have to go on looking ugly for quite some time.
