5 anos de espera/ 5 years waiting

jardim 4751-1

I proudly show you the picture of my first pear. For 5 years the pear treas have not produced any fruit and hardly and flowers. Then this year, maybe because I pampered them with compost and water all summer, maybe because I threaten to pull them out if they wouldn't give me any fruits, one of them has finally produced 5 pears (one for each year waiting). This is the first one I picked, its not fully ripe yet (pears shouldn't be allowed to ripe in the tree) so I don't know yet if it was worth waiting for.

It looks beautiful. I'm sure it will be delicious and worth the wait!

Just looking at your pear made my mouth start watering. Yummmm It is bound to be good after all that pampering. I think it often takes 5-7 years for fruit trees to bear. Your patience has been rewarded.

Congratulations on your first crop of pears! I will have to wait (and hope again) for next year. Our japanese nashi pear tree had some fruits, but a hailstorm broke them all! Not even one, single pear to taste this year. :(

At long last you've got a result, 5 nice pears. Well they look nice, hopefully they taste nice too. Do you know which kind of pear it is?

BTW I've found that a combination of pampering and threats often work wonders in the garden. :-)

ameixa seca, tb cá me parece q a ameaça foi o factor determinante ;-)

chaiselongue, I also think so.

lisa at greenbow, my apricot tree was bearing fruits on its second year and so was the peach tree. Maybe with pears ir takes longuer.

rowena, sorry about your pears. You probabaly will have more luck next year and won't have to end up waiting 5 year like I did ;-)

LOL yolanda! Yes, looks like the combination of threats and pampering in the right amounts works wonders ;-)
This is a Portuguese variety of pears called "pera rocha" (rock pear in english). They have a firm flesh and should be eaten wile still hard. You can let them ripe until they are soft but don't taste as good.

Bravo! Even if the pear doesn't taste that good, just knowing the trees will finally produce must be very satisfying.

Gardeners are very patient! 5 years is a long, long time. I hope it tasted good?

Looks Delicious. I'd have trouble waiting for it to ripen.

Looks yummy! I hope you let us know how it tastes... I'm intrigued by the thought of a "rock pear," maybe because the kinds I have tasted before all are better just softened.

And I'm leaning toward the threat. Especially if you already started thinking about what you wanted to plant in its place... that seems to always give MY plants a good kick in the rear end, anyway!

It's been a good year for pears and congrats on getting your first fruit. Yum yum to it all.
